Production 1 – Journalist Debate

On 18-10-17, we were approached about filming a journalistic debate
within the television studio on the topic of the Catalonian independence and how
it would affect the European Union. During the meeting on said date, we talked
about how the studio would be laid out, with the main focus to be set upon the
speaker and how to view the two opposing teams whilst the speaker is giving
their argument. I managed to find a podium that could be used by the speaker in
the centre of the studio. There would be four members of each team on either
side of the podium, on chairs already found in the studio. As well, a green screen
would be placed behind the podium to convey images of the topic the speaker
was on.

Also during the meeting we assigned roles for the filming. I took the role
of one of the cameraperson because I felt I needed more experience using the
equipment.

Before the two teams arrived on the day of filming (06-11-17), we began
performing a small rehearsal at 9:00 am. A group of stand-ins took the places of
where each of the performers would stand in the filming. I helped set up the
layout of the studio and the headsets for communication between the crew. The
other camera operators and I had the equipment both positioned correctly and
focused about 40 minutes into the setup. The actual filming began around 25
minutes later when all the issues with audio were dealt with.

The filming went completely smoothly, with the debate only having to be
stopped so that I could move the camera to a steeper angle, due to a taller
individual who had come up to speak. Filming lasted around 40 minutes and
after the clean up of the studio we finished at 11:00 am.

Production 2 – Media Gonzales

The next idea that I brought to a group meeting on 15-11-17 was that of a
film review/ debate show. The show would be themed around a talk show style
layout, with a host and two guests discussing film and television in a formal
setting. Jack said he had contact with students in performing arts that could take
part as performer. As well as the performing arts students, our fellow classmate
Desmond Lynch agreed to take part also.

The props were relatively easy to come by, with the table and chair used
by the host already in the studio while the sofa the two “guests” sit on was
brought up from reception of the Northland Building of the college. Both Shelby
and I agreed to bring in props that are linked to media to decorate the desk of the
host. When we worked out the roles, I was asked to be director due to me
bringing the idea to the table.

We filmed on 21-11-17, and setup the studio before the performers

arrived, starting around 9:00 am. I started up all the machines, computers and
monitors necessary for the filming of the production. While the layout of the
production was being setup, I signed in to the computer that was in charge of
recording the film and set it up so that is was ready for recording. Due to traffic
problems the performing arts students were slightly late so it gave us more of a
chance to perform more checks on all the equipment and for me to position the
cameras in the ways to offer the best angles and views. However it was not long
before all performers were present and recording began around 9:40 am.

Filming went relatively smoothly with me telling the switcher when to cut
to different cameras. After 20 minutes, the programme was finished and we
began the clean the studio up. As this happened, I saved the recording and put it
on a large drive. The recording took over 20 minutes to collect from the
computer and after it was transferred, I turned off all the computers and
appliances in the control room. By 10:30, I handed over the production to be
edited by other members of the team.

Production 3 – Dale’s Infomercial

Continuing on from our ideas from a meeting on 27-11-17, on 05-12-17
we discussed the possibility of filming a mock infomercial (or teleshopping
advertisements). The theme of the production would be to make a cheesy and
light-hearted spoof on over dramatic infomercials. I offered to act as the star if
we could not find any other available actors at the time. If I were to act in the
production however, I would also be a major part in setting up the studio and
other such behind the scenes work.

On 12-12-17, we began setting up the studio in preparation for filming at

9:00 am. The green screen and headsets for the crew were put up quickly and by
9:25 am the studio was ready. The only prop necessary was a badly drawn Henry
Hoover, which I drew on site with a pen. After multiple checks of the cameras
and sound equipment, the production was ready to start around 9:40 am.
Performing went relatively simple, only taking an hour including reshoots of
some dialogue and actions. Clean up was simple and by 10:50 the studio was
clear of all wires and green screen.
