ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO
2015-PRESENT
The Gae House by Atelier Bow Wow is analyzed in two ways: stereotomic and tectonic. These analyses lead to a different interpretation of the house using various
material studies. Casting and soldering was essential in the model making practices.

STEREOTOMIC CASTING STUDIES OF GAE HOUSE

Casting was utilized in order to create clear volumes which would later recreate the Gae house. The thrive to cast super clear acrylic was demanding but very
rewarding. Various strategies were implemented such as building a vacuum chamber in order to get rid of bubbles. The color illusion effect is then created with
the use of paint. 䌀愀猀琀椀渀最 匀琀甀搀椀攀猀

TECTONIC STUDIES OF GAE HOUSE TECTONIC STUDIES OF GAE HOUSE

For the model of the tectonic analysis, wire and paint is used to further examine the tectonic qualities of the house. Wire is connected using soldering and primitive
colors are implemented.
The ambition of this installation to create a tectonic system made by more than 600 acrylic panels and film gels to create a playful environment on the interior
while having a frosty exterior with the constraint of our primitive shape: the cone. The outside panes hides the film gels in the interoir while still giving a hint of
whats behind.

LIBRARY WITH PROGRAM X - SKYDIVING

In my design, the library program is connected with my program X, skydiving by the skydiving units piercing through the floor plates. I decided to play with
the concept of transperency and used perforation to control how light comes through. With the knowledge I gained from the material studies I decided to
use a double facade which would create the feeling of transperency but at the same time read as a solid from the exterior.

THE HUT: Three follies are created with the idea of space within space. The follies interact with the site differently, the tower is carved in the ground whereas the
tower sits on it. There is a clear path of circulation which was the main drive in the site circulation strategy.
THE HUT: A grid system is utilized in each folly. A void which appears to be solid because of its dense skin is utilized and can be experienced in different ways.
AXONOMETRIC STUDIES: This project tries to create a two dimensional drawing using tapes as linework. The tapes are put on the floor of USC Architecture
School’s courtyard to be exhibited for a month. The axonometric drawing portrays the stairs next to the site.

ANALYZING LOS ANGELES BUILDING TYPOLOGY:
SINGLE FAMILY HOUSING
FERAL FIGURES: THE DINGBAT

Architecture connects certain aspects of the city to typology and form. Los Angeles is no
exeption. However unlike every other city, Los Angeles has an indefinite, messy, unspecific urban
form. The object I selected was a very LA apartment complex, a dingbat. The dingbat is typolog-
ically determined. It is a formless object in functional landscape; with an open garage on the bot-
tom floor and residential program on the second and third floors.

In my project, I decided to use the form to challenge this typology. By transforming the ob-
ject, I aimed for the oblique volumes to follow the free facede. The spaces the intersecting vol-
umes revealed were compelling and turned into courtyards. The facade remained the same in the
exterior however the other side of the object showcases the transformation: the rotated volumes
as well as the thickened, slipped facade.

The typology is not only challenged by the form but also the program. The bottom floor of
my design is where my botanist client lives and the top floor is where he keeps different types
of seeds from all around the world as well as a library of botany books seperated regionally. The
courtyards created from the transformation is the space of plantation. The landscape provides
a larger space of plantation. There is a different experience from reaching the site from different
roads. From one way the building is percieved as a dingbat but from another angle the challenged
typology is expressed. The building, while still connecting with LA, also challenges the dingbat ty-
pology by the inversion of program and the interrelation of object and site.

HOUSE GUESTS

In this project the drive was to find the most efficient way of living in a 12’x12’x12 area.
In order to maximize the space, the cube was utilized as the form and every activity, living, dining ,sleeping,
bathroom, kitchen is containted within the constraints of the cube. The biggest challenge was to maximize
the living area and minimizing the services like the bathroom and kitchen. Introducing a loft where the occupant
would sleep increases the square footage of the living area. A flexible space is introduced where the occupant
can pick what to do. Specific furniture for the space has to be designed for the thrive to create a large living area.
Therefore, store area sits within the stairs and some furniture like chairs come out of the kitchen counter.

THREE UNIT APARTMENT COMPLEX
BOUNDARY ISSUES

When dealing with an orthagonal site, the boundaery becomes an important factor in designing
three units which would have a communal area. In my project I tried to keep the units contained
within the block by pushing the curved design moves to the interior. Therefore the experience
from the exterior looking into the space is vastly different from that of lookingout of the space.

Each unit is formed by three outside surfaces that are orhagonal and keeps the
units in that boundary where the curved surface which looks inside the project creates a
valley-like experience and interesting moments for the user. The curves lead the user to the
garden spacewhich is the center of the communal area. Every unit looks at the garden space
while maintaining a great deal of privaxy

SEVENTEEN UNIT HOUSING SOLUTION
WITH COMMUNITY PROGRAM
CO-HOUSING + HQ

The main idea of my project is to create an environment where there is an obvious

distinction between what is public and private in both the placement of program and the
visual experience of occupants. The Ron Finley Community area is more organic in
shape and flexible in plan which juxtaposes with the orthogonal nature of the forms
used in the housing units.

Creating a step down motion by removing and adding units using the grid, terraces and
private and communal garden areas are created. The layout of the units are important in
terms of the living area being centralized and having the services like the kitchen and
bathroom, on the sides. This lets the units open up in both directions and the use of
large windows on each side strengthens this idea.
