Dear Parishioners,

The story of the Prophet Jonah is one of the most exciting stories in the Bible. His story is often regarded as a children’s tale, especially the part about being swallowed up by a whale and three days later being vomited out in the sea shore. Jonah had been invited by God to go to preach in the great city of Nineveh. But instead, Jonah ran away from God, and even crossed the sea to make sure God would not find him! But God never gives up on us. Today’s reading take up the story where God makes a second attempt to get Jonah, the Prophet to go and preach in Nineveh where he thought he would be a failure in getting the people to turn back to God (that was why he ran away in the first place). He found much to his surprise, the people listened to him and believed in God and repented. We can never presume what will or will not happen, when we proclaim God’s name. Jonah needed to be taught a lesson. He is given a second chance – our God is a God of second chances!

Notice the contrast of the responses in the Gospel. John the Baptist has been arrested and put in prison. The way is clear for Jesus to begin his public ministry. He is not going to work alone. He needs helpers. (Last Sunday we heard about Andrew introducing Jesus to his brother, Peter). They are both called from their fishing boats. Then James and John are invited. All follow Jesus without hesitation; they leave everything, boats, nets and family to follow Jesus. What must the families have felt? We will never know. Jesus asks the same of us: ‘Follow me’! For most older people the call means doing what are all already doing, but in and with a renewed heart. For some it may mean a change of direction or taking up a particular calling in life. It is here the opening to respond to the Lord’s calling in a vocation to priesthood, religious life can be seen. The Lord is calling us to follow him every day of our lives. He is inviting us to be his witnesses; to be nourished by his word and Eucharist; to bring his message of love, peace and reconciliation in to our live and the lives of others.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY: From 18 th Jan to 25 th Jan., the Feast of Conversion of St Paul, we pray for unity among Christians. Jesus prayed, “That they may be one” – this is our prayer too. CARRILION COLLAPSE: What’s going on? This company was said to be too big to fail! Everybody will have an opinion. But in the end, it’s our taxes are being squandered, while many are struggling to live day by day, while taxpayers foot £200bn bill for PFI contracts. I ask you! Not to speak of the UK arms trade with Saudi Arabia and the millions in “back- handers”. These weapons used also against the people of Yemen. You may say I’m very political – but here we have the sad reality of moral corruption. Should one be silent? We always need to be aware of what is happening in our name! God bless, Fr Joe
