Unit Title: SF Bay Bridge Project Name: Eric Raimondo

Content Area: Mathematics Grade Level: 7th
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
 CCSS.7.G.A.1
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
 CCSS.7.G.A.2
Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the
conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.
 CCSS.7.G.B.5
Use facts about supplementary, complementary, vertical, and adjacent angles in a multi-step problem to write and solve simple equations for an unknown angle in a figure.
 CCSS.7.EE.B.3
Solve multi-step real-life and mathematical problems posed with positive and negative rational numbers in any form (whole numbers, fractions, and decimals), using tools strategically
 CCSS.7.EE.B.4
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
 How do civil engineers decide on what type of bridge to build?
 What role does geometry and other mathematics play in determining what type of bridge to build?
 While building your model, what kinds of decisions will you need to make in order to build your scale model and keep it within your budgetary constraints?
Unit Summary:
The Metropolitan Transportation Commission is the agency that is the transportation planning, financing and coordinating agency for the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area.. They have
determined that there is currently too much traffic over the Bay Bridge. They are planning for the construction of a new bridge over the San Francisco Bay to meet the needs of the expected
increase in traffic in the future. As a bridge designer, you have been selected to plan, design, and construct the new bridge connecting San Francisco and Oakland.
Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Formative: Summative:

Quiz – what do you know about bridges and Quiz – Name 6 types of bridges and the geometric Presentation – Scale model presentation and
geometric shapes shapes expected in them. justification for choice and location.
Ranking – longest to short bridge types Report – Budgetary report.
Flashcards – identify the 6 types of bridges by

Venn Diagram – Similarities of geometric shapes in
different types of bridges
Lesson 1 (Teacher Lecture)
Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence Lesson Activities:
Teacher does an entry level (Assessments): Entry Level Students will take an entry level assessment to test student’s prior knowledge of shapes and bridge types.

Lesson 2 (Webercise/ iPad Lesson)
Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence: Lesson Activities:
Student’s will go over Formative Assessment Student’s will go over resources provided and be able to name at least 4 of the 6 bridges, geometric
resources provided and be shapes associated with each type of bridge and be able to sketch each type of bridge. They will also
able to name at least 4 of rank the bridges between shortest to longest, use flashcards to be able to identify each bridge by
the 6 bridges, geometric sight, and a Venn diagram to list the similar shapes in each type of bridge.

Lesson 3 (Graphic Organizer)
Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence: Lesson Activities:
Students will take the Summative Assessment Students will present a scale model to the class and justify why they choose that location and bridge
knowledge they gained type. They will also turn in a report on their budget and how they appropriated their funds.

They will need to justify
their decision and turn in
their budgetary report.
