Learning Competencies: The learner finds the next few terms of an arithmetic sequence.
Find the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of sequences.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to formulate and solve problems involving arithmetic
sequence.

I. Objectives:
At the end of the session, the students must be able to:

1. Determine the next few terms of an arithmetic sequence.

2. Find the nth term of an arithmetic sequence.
3. Demonstrate cooperation in the class activity.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Arithmetic Sequence
References:
Mathematics G10 TG pp. 16 – 18
G10 LM pp. 12 – 15
Materials: Activity sheets, Board Marker, Eraser
Strategies: Cooperative Learning

III. Procedure
A. Daily Routine
 Morning Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of attendance

B. Activity:
What do we have in common? (toothpick –Group Activity)
1. Let the students form squares using toothpick by completing the table below.

No.of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 n
squares
No.of
Toothpicks

D. Analysis
Guide questions.
1. Is there a pattern in the number of toothpicks? If there is, describe it.
2. How is each term (number of toothpickss) found?
3. What is the difference between any two consecutive number of toothpicks?
4. How was the activity? What new things did you learn from the activity?
5. What is the formula for determining the number of toothpicks needed to form n squares?

E. Abstraction

A pattern can be seen in the number of toothpicks (Recursive Formula)

A Recursive sequence is a sequence formed by giving its first term, a1, and a rule showing
how to obtain the (n+1)th term, an+1, from the general term, an.
Recursive Formula Pattern
𝑎1 = 4 𝑎1 = 4 + 0(3)
𝑎2 = (4 + 3) 𝑎2 = 4 + 1(3)
𝑎3 = (4 + 3) + 3 𝑎3 = 4 + 2(3)
𝑎4 = [ (4 + 3) + 3 ] + 3 𝑎4 = 4 + 3(3)
Present an example of finding the next term of an arithmetic sequence to the students.
a. Find the next two terms of the following sequence
1) 3,12,21,___,_____
2)81,64,47,_____,______
b. Find the 9th term of the sequence given below
1) 7,12,17,22,27,……
Step 1: Use the formula An= A1 + (n-1)d
Step 2: Substitute the value for A1, n and d

Where d= common difference

A1= first term of the sequence
n = number of nth term
Step 3: Solve An= A1 + (n-1)d
A9= 7 + (9-1) 5
A9= 7 + 40
A9= 47
th
The 9 term of the sequence given is 47.
2) 81,64,47,30,……

Application

“Think-Pair-Share”
Let the student choose a partner. Let them think a problem involving an arithmetic
sequence and “by pair” they will be finding the 20th term of their chosen arithmetic sequence. Let
them discuss their work in front of the class. (Note: Necessary solutions should be written in a piece
of paper and discussion will be in the form of draw lots).

IV. Evaluation
Choose one number to solve. Show necessary solutions.
Find the next two terms and the 35th term of the sequence:

1. -1,-3,-5,-7,……

2. 4,13,22,31,….

3. -51,-46,-41,-36,……

V. Agreement
Choose a real-life situation which involves arithmetic sequences. You could research online
or create your own. Be sure to choose what interests your group the most to make your
reality series not only interesting but also entertaining.
