Expectations of Goals and Objectives for Doctoral Internship at John Hopkins Hospital
Student: Selena Hengy OTD Program Director: Dr. Laster

Expectations of Goals for the Internship Experience:


1. By 16 weeks, I will gain enhanced clinical practice skills working as an Occupational Therapist
within the inpatient setting, specifically with neurorehabilitation techniques for spinal stenosis
in order to gain skills as an entry level practitioner.
2. By the end of 16 weeks, I will compare and contrast the occupational therapy
services/treatment provided in inpatient care for various spinal stenosis conditions at Johns
Hopkins Hospital.
3. At the end of 16 weeks, I will track 10 patients on diagnosis and treatment techniques for
various spinal stenosis surgery patients in the inpatient setting at Johns Hopkins Hospital by 16
weeks.

4. By week 10, I will identify evidence-based occupational therapy treatment plans for various
spinal stenosis surgeries patients in the inpatient care unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
5. By the end of 16 weeks, I will have enhanced creativity skills through engagement in the
treatments appropriate for the care of individuals in the inpatient setting.
6. By 16 weeks, I will be an independent and articulate communicator who critically thinks,
collaborates with other professionals, is innovative, analytical, and able to problem solve.
7. At the end of 16 weeks, I will be able to evaluate and treat clients who have spinal
stenosis with supervision only using different techniques learned during my DSI and through
evidence-based research.
Objectives for the DSI Experience:

1. To gain leadership experience and to develop interpersonal communication skills working


with staff and patients with spinal stenosis.

2. To recognize and analyze an underserved area of occupational therapy within inpatient


care for spinal stenosis conditions.

4. Each week, I will document the information on individuals on my caseload that have a
spinal stenosis diagnosis including early or delayed mobility, knowledge/confidence level of OT
services, motivation to recover, and length of stay.

5. By week 5, I will begin creating an Excel spreadsheet in preparation to compare and
contrast the various elements of occupational therapy services for individuals with these types of
diagnoses.
6. By 16-weeks, I will have advanced skills in treatments appropriate for various types of
spinal stenosis patients through creative development and implementation of an original
occupational therapy case study comparing and contrasting the diagnoses seen at Johns Hopkins
Hospital inpatient care,
7. By week 16, I will have written a case study report documenting findings to identify the
benefits or areas for improvement within occupational therapy interventions for individuals who
have undergone a spinal stenosis surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
