Determine the main dimension of the core,the number of turns and the cross section of the

conductors for a 5kva, 11000/400 V, 50Hz, single phase core type distribution transformer. The net
conductor area in the window is .6 times the net cross section of iron in the core. Assume a
square cross section of the core, a flux density 1 Wb/m2, a current density 1.4 A/mm2, and a
window space factor .2. The height of window is 3 times its width.

Given that:
Net Conductor area = 0.6 x net iron area or KwAw = 0.6Ai
This gives us area of window Aw = (0.6⁄Kw)Ai
For a single phase transformer...
Q = 2.22fBmJKwAwAi
Q = 5 KVA, f = 50Hz, Bm = 1Wb/m2, Kw = 0.2,J = 1.4A/mm2
5 = 2.22 x 50 x 1x0.2 x 1.4 x 106 x 3AixAi x10-3
so we get Ai = 0.00732 m2
Assume Ki = 0.9
giving us Agi = gross iron area =(.00732⁄.9) = 0.00814
therfore width of core a =√.00814 =0.09m
so we got 2 things...
first gross iron area Agi = 0.00814m2
and net iron area Ai = 0.00732m2
giving us window area Aw = 3 X 0.00732 = 0.02187m2
Height of window Hw = 3Ww.
as Hw x Ww = Aw, therefore 3Ww2 = Aw.
giving Ww = 0.085m and Hw = 3 x 0.085 = .255m
as core is square therefore Dy = Hy.
Depth of yoke = Height of yoke = a = 0.09m.
Flux Φm = BmAi=1 x 7.29 x 10-3= 7.29x10-3Wb.
Voltage per Turn Et = 4.44fΦm = 4.44x50x7.29x10-3 = 1.625 V.
Secondary Turns Ts = (Secondary Voltage⁄Voltage per turn) = 400/1.625 = 246
Therefore Primary Turns Tp = (Primary Voltage/Secondary Voltage)xSecondary turns = (1100/400)x 246 =
6765.
Primary Winding Current Ip = 5kVa/11000V = .455 amp.
Area of primary conductor ap = Ip/J = .455/1.4 = .384mm2.
Secondary Winding Current Is = 5kVa/400V = 12.5 amp.
Area of secondary conductor as = Is/J = 12.5/1.4 = 8.93mm2.
Length of Frame W = D + a = Ww + a + a = .085 + .09 +.09 = .265m
Height of Frame H = Hw + 2Hy = 0.255 + 2x.09 = .435m
