driven wheel = 300 mm, diameter of driven pulley = 500 mm, diameter of driver pulley = 150 m
and center distance = 925 mm. (13)
(b). Design a flat belt drive for the following data: power to be transmitted = 22.5 kW; driver speed
= 740 rpm; speed ratio = 3; distance between the pulleys = 3m; larger pulley diameter = 1.2m. (13)
12.(a)It is required to select a flat-belt drive for a fan running at 360 rpm, which is driven by a
10kW, 1440 rpm, motor. The belt is open type and space available for a center distance of 2m
approximately. The diameter of a driven pulley is 1000 mm. (13)
(b) A compressor is to be actuated from a 10 kW electric motor. The motor shaft is 970 rpm. And
that of the compressor is to be 330 rpm. The compressor operating in two shifts. The minimum
center distance should be 1000 mm. design a suitable chain drive. (13)
13. (a) A truck equipped with a 9.5 kW engine uses a roller chain as the final drive to the rear axle.
The driving sprocket runs at 900 rpm and the driven sprocket at 400 rpm. With a center distance of
approximately 600 mm. select the roller chain. (13)
(b) Design a spur gear drive required to transmit 45 KW at a pinion speed of 800 r.p.m. The
velocity ratio is 3.5:1. The teeth are 200 full depth involute with 18 teeth on the pinion. Both the
pinion and gear are made of steel with a maximum safe static stress of 180 N/mm 2. Assume
medium shock conditions. (13)
14. (a) A compressor running at 300 rpm is driven by a 15 KW 1200 rpm motor through a 141/2
degree full depth spur gears. The center distance is 375 mm. The motor pinion is to be of C30
forged steel hardened and tempered, and the driven gear is to be of cast iron. Assuming medium
shock condition, Design the gear drive completely. (13)
(b)Design a helical gear to transmit 15 KW at 1400 rpm. To the following specifications; Speed
reduction is 3, pressure angle is 200, Helix angle is 150, The material of both the gears is C45
steel. Allowable static stress 180 N/mm2, surface endurance limit is 800 N/mm2, young’s
modulus of material=2x105 N/mm2. (13)
15.(a) A compressor running at 360 rpm. Is driven by a 140 kW, 1140 rpm.Motor through a pair
of 200 full depth helical gears having helix angle of 25o. The center distance is approximately 400
mm. The motor pinion is to be forged steel and the driven gear is to be forged steel and the
driven gear is to be cast steel. Assume medium shock conditions. Design the gear pair. (13)
(b) A pair of 20o full depth involute teeth 30o helical gears having a velocity ratio of 3. The
pinion is made of steel with alloable static stress of 100N/mm2. The pinion transmiots 40 kW at
1500rpm. Determine all the basic dimensions of the pair.Assume width of face as 3 times the

normal pitch and tooth form factor as 0.154 − , Where Zv is the equivalent number of
Zv
teeth. (13)

Allowable static stress for pinion and gear are 85 and 105N/mm2 respectively. The pinion has 22
standard 20° full depth involutes teeth. The power transmitted is 32Kw. The surface endurance limit
for the gear is 520N/mm2, modulus of elasticity of the pinion material is 1.2×105N/mm2 and that of
gear is 1×105N/mm2. If the starting torque is 25% more than the mean torque, design the gear drive
