Shapes and Space Final Project

Assignment:

You will be designing at least one floor in your dream home. Your design must include at least: Step 2) Looking at the floor plan, choose the room/rooms you will design, (how many rooms you

 2 squares OR 2 rectangles of different sizes write down will depend if you choose Option A or B).

 2 triangles of different sizes

 2 parallelograms of different sizes

 2 circles of different sizes

Step 1) Choose and circle Option A or Option B

A. You could incorporate all required shapes into the floor of one room.

OR

B. You can separate the shapes into different rooms. For example you could design two

rooms, each room containing two shapes, or you could design four rooms with one

shape in each room.

Step 3) On the next sheet of paper, draw your room/rooms, including the measurements. Make

sure your room/rooms are at least half a page in size.

Step 4) To ‘floor’ your room/rooms

 Draw at least two different sizes of each shape within your ‘room/rooms.’

o Hint: The more sizes of shapes you draw the more calculations you will need to

complete. You need to draw a minimum of two sizes of each shape.

o Make sure you use your compass when drawing the circles and parallelograms.
Step 6) Using the your drawing:

a) Calculate the area of your room/rooms that you choose using the appropriate formula.

Formulas to know:

A(square) = l w A(rectangle) = l w

A(parallelogram) = b h A(triangle) = b h
2
A(circle) = π r2

C(circle) = d π C(circle)= 2r π

Step 7) Fill out the table as you complete the questions: c) Calculate the area of the two sizes of triangles:

Shape How many? Dimensions (inches) Calculated area

Squares or rectangles (size 1) l= w=

Squares or rectangles (size 2) l= w=

Triangle (size 1) b= h=
d) Calculate the area of the two sizes of parallelograms:
Triangle (size 2) b= h=

Parallelogram (size 1) b= h=

Parallelogram (size 2) b= h=

Circle (size 1) d= r=

e) Calculate the area of the two sizes of circles:

a) Measure the dimensions of each shape, and fill in the above table.

b) Calculate the area of the two sizes of squares/rectangles:

f) Calculate the circumference of the two sizes of circles:

Step 8) Using the follow chart, choose ‘materials’ for your floors. Choose a color for each of your

‘flooring’ shapes, and draw them on your ‘floor’ from Step 3. Assign a different color/material to
Total cost for Parallelograms:
each size of each shape. For example, all size 1 triangles can be purple, and size 2 can be orange.
Size 1 Size 2
Color Material type Cost

Green Ceramic Tile $ 12 per square foot

Blue Laminate $ 3 per square foot

Purple Hardwood $ 6 per square foot

Red Concrete $ 4 per square foot

Grey Cork $ 7 per square foot Total cost for Circles:

Yellow Marble $ 18 per square foot Size 1 Size 2

Yellow Carpet $ 5 per square foot

Step 9) Now that you have determined how many of each shape you need from Step 7 and what

materials they are, calculate how much each size of shape will cost you.
Step 10) Calculate the total cost of flooring (all shapes and sizes) your room/rooms.
Total cost for Squares AND/OR rectangles:
