A. Short Functional Text Description

Short Functional Text is a short text that has particular meaning and purpose, and
can be used in our daily life. The characteristic features of short functional text is
short and easy to understand, written interestingly, sometimes with pictures, packed
with interesting.

B. Types of Short Functional Text


1) Notice
a. Description

Notice is a notice / warning in the form of writing / pictures / signs to


provide information, instructions or warnings to the public.

b. Generic Structure

 Orientation : containing plot and characters


 Evalution : evaluating the plight of story
 Complication : crisis of story
 Resolution : problem solving

c. Purpose of the text

 To give instruction/to instruct people


 To give direction
 To ask people to
 To advice/to suggest/to recommend people to
 To remaind people to
 To ban/to forbid/to prohibit people to

Notice is divided into :


- Command
Notice command means a commanding notice. This command
notice usually tells the person / reader to do what is written in the
notice.

- Caution
Caution is simple and brief information addressed to others to
avoid danger or risk of careful attitude or manner of behaving. Notice
can also take the form of signs, in order to be easily understood.
Caution (notice) is usually placed in certain strategic places.

- Warning
Warning are signs that are usually installed in certain places to
attract the attention of the reader. This warning is made for the
salvation of the reader. Purpose of this text is to give a warning that it
is dangerous, to give direction through the warning.

dangerous electrical voltage

- Information

Notice Information means informational notification. The


function of this information notice is to provide information to the
reader for what is stated in the notice.

* Information on opening hours / closed tourist attractions.

*At 08.00 o’clock.

2) Short Message
a. Description

Short Message is a short text form that serves to tell someone about
certain information. Message delivered because unable to meet directly with
the person. This can be done by writing a short message on a piece of paper or
through a hand phone.

b. Purpose

To send an important message or information to other people, friend or family


c. Generic Structure

 Receiver : It is the purpose of the message that we will convey


 Contain/ Body : The contents of the message will be delivered.
 Sender : Who sent the message

d. Example

Dear Sony

Can you do me a favour, please? Sorry, I couldn't attend our study


club this afternoon because I attended my uncle's house warming
party. However I have summarized materials for our group
assignment and I gave it to your mother. Please check it out with
the others. Please pass my appologies to Randy and Bryan. Thank
you.

3) Letter

a. Description
Letter is a written tool written in writing to a party that is usually sent
through the post office. In general, to send letters in need stamps and
envelopes as a tool to pay for delivery services. The farther the destination of
mailing, the value dictum in the stamp must be greater.

b. Purpose
Purpose of the text is depends on the text

 Signature
d. Languange Features
- Using Simple Present Tense.
- Sometimes also using Simple Past Tense if the information submitted
happened in the past.

e. Example

Dear Ratih,

Hey it's been a while How's life going for you? I do hope you are all safe
and sound last holiday my family and I spent a night in a countryside
cottage. It has a beautiful scenery and warm people. At night, we made a
small fire in fronmt of the house and grilled some sausages and potatoes.
We sang together, we shared stories, That was all about my holiday, how
about you ? I'd like to hear more about you. I hope you would reply thus
mail A.S.A.P

4) Greeting Card

a. Description
A short text form that contains the hope or utterance sent to a person at
certain moments. For example birthday greetings, Lebaran, New Year, and
others.

b. Purpose
The purpose of greeting card is to congratulate, to wish or to show
sympathy for someone’s achievement.

c. Generic Structure

 Receiver

To whom the greeting is sent for. Write down the name of receiver if it
is needed.

 Body

The body of greeting card usually consists of interesting words added


by substance as the following:
- Quote : these words related to the activity.
- Picture : the greeting is inserted with interesting picture.
- Expression : using Congratulation Expression or Sympathy
Expression.

 Sender

It is better to write down the sender of the greeting card.

d. Example

Happy Mother's Day

Your smile brightens each day just as the morning rays shines on the hills
and it’s with doubt that this gives us the courage to face the new day with
joy.

5) Announcement

a. Description

Announcement text is statement (official notice) in oral or written form


that contains something for everyone to know.

b. Purpose

The purpose is to inform the announcement text information about an


event, job vacancies, new enrollment, new admissions, and so on.

c. Generic Structure

 Title: This is the most important part as it represents the overall content
of the announcement. Even so sometimes not mentioned clearly.
 Explanation: Further explanation of the announcement. Usually
consists of basic information that includes: type of activity, time, place,
and participant.
d. Languange Features

Using Future Tense.

e. Example

ANNOUNCEMENT

To: all employees

There will be a blackout each Saturday during this month. Consequently,


we will use the generator as the electric source. So, please do not use air
conditioners on Saturdays.

Please don’t forget to turn off the lights, computers, printers during the
break as usual.

6) Advertisement

a. Description

Advertisement ( iklan ) is a text that has the objective to announce a


something that appeals to many poeple and that adds a well known product in
all public.

The purpose of the advertisement is to announce/advert about a case or


a public, or in other words to introduce a product to the public in order to buy
and attracted to the product being advertised.

c. Generic Structure

 Title : Part of the advertisement which is the main topic / title.


 Explanation : Contains an explanation of the ad.

d. Languange Features

Advertisement Text uses Persuasive Language Style.
