Genetic engineering is not only used to produce disease-resistant plants. Some plants have been
genetically engineered to be herbicide-resistant and others, such as ‘golden rice’, have been
developed to combat dietary deficiencies. Transgenic plants with characteristics that allow them to be
grown in areas where they would not normally be successful have also been produced. One example Linked to
of this is tomatoes that can be grown in areas that suffer from frost. Transgenic plants that produce page 335
fruit and vegetables with an increased shelf life have also been produced.
■ Research information about the different types of transgenic plants and complete the table below
to summarise your information.

Type of transgenic plant Example Description Advantages

Herbicide-resistant

Combating dietary
deficiencies

Expanding areas of
cultivation

Increasing shelf life

■ The benefits
benefits of transgenic plants are revolutionising the agricultural industry,
industry but there are many
who disagree with their use. Research information and discuss the potential risks associated with
the use of genetically modified crops.
