RESULTANT OF FORCE
SYSTEMS
• The resultant of a force system is defined to be the
simplest system that can replace the original system
without changing its external effect on a rigid body.
• Generally composed of a force and a couple. The
general equations to compute for the resultant are
defined by:
R  F
M O   M   (F  d )
M O  Rd
RESULTANT OF FORCE
SYSTEMS
• Concurrent Force System (Coplanar)
– Force system is said to be concurrent if all the
line of action of forces meet at a common
point.
– Resultant only composed of a single force.
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 1 (Introductory Prob. 2/7, p. 33)
The two structural members, one of which is in tension and
the other in compression, exert the indicated forces on joint O.
Determine the magnitude of the resultant R of the two forces
and the angle θ which R makes with the positive x-axis.
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 2 (Introductory Prob. 2/79, p. 61)
Two rods and one cable are attached to the support at O. If
two of the forces are as shown, determine the magnitude F
and direction of the third force so that the resultant of the
three forces is vertically downward with a magnitude of 1200
lb.
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 3 (Representative Prob. 2/13, p. 34)
The guy cables AB and AC are attached to the top of the
transmission tower. The tension in cable AB is 8 kN.
Determine the required tension T in cable AC such that the
net effect of the two cable tensions is a downward force at
point A. Determine the magnitude R of this downward force.
RESULTANT OF FORCE
SYSTEMS
• Parallel Force System (Coplanar)
– Resultant only composed of either a force or a
couple or both.

• Non - Concurrent Force Systems

(Coplanar)
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 4 (Introductory Prob. 2/83, p. 61)
Where does the resultant of the two forces act?
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 5
The overhead electric hoist C rides along a track on the horizontal
beam AB. In addition to the 500-kN vertical force carried by the
hoist, the beam also supports the three vertical forces shown.
(a) If x =5 m, determine the resultant of the four forces carried by the
beam.
(b) Determine the distance x for which the resultant of the four
forces would act at the center of the span AB.
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 6
The resultant of the three forces is the force R = −170j kN acting
through point B. Determine P1, P2, and P3.
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 7 (Introductory Prob. 2/87, p. 62)
The flanged steel cantilever beam with riveted bracket is subjected
to the couple and two forces shown, and their effect on the design of
the attachment at A must be determined. Replace the two forces and
couple by an equivalent couple M and resultant force R at A.
PROBLEMS
• PROBLEM 8
Replace the coplanar force system that acts on the
casting with an equivalent force-couple system, with the
force acting at (a) point O; and (b) point A.
