STUDENT-TEACHING REFLECTION

Student-teaching is part of the pre-service training that an undergraduate

student must undergo. Student-teaching challenges your skills and abilities not just a

teacher but a person as a whole. This could be the stressful yet enjoyable moments.

Being in Barrio Luz Elementary School for about 2 months made me realized enormous

things and helped me prepare as a teacher in the near future. It made my mind

enlighten the real scenarios of a teacher in public school.

During our orientation in Barrio Luz Elementary School we felt a very

warm welcome from the principal as well as to the faculty, the principal give advice to us

student teacher what would be our role and she also remind us the do’s and dont’s to

avoid conflict and such. We were introduced to our mentor and I was under Mrs.

Cherrylyn Borres internship. Before that the principal also announced that we will be

shifting into another grade to experience and have exposure, I felt happy and excited

since it’s gonna be a challenge and to test our versatility if we can handle in different

grade level. On the first day of class I was introduce of the advisory class of Mrs. Borres

which is Grade 5. The students seems so happy since they gonna have student-teacher

in their class. I also felt happy to know that I was in Grade-5 level because back of my

mind it’s not a big adjustment since I was assigned in Grade 4 level during in campus

and also I do expect that these students will act maturely according to their age. As I

observe class I can see that these students came from different economic status in life

with different characteristics. As days goes by my mentor and I already had a rapport, a

professional relationship a student to mentor relationship she asked to observe her in

the class before I take over next week. I also agreed so that I can also build a rapport

with my students so that they won’t be shy anymore and feel awkward about me. Before

I forgot to mention Mrs. Borres have 4 sections to handle in Filipino. Basically, less

burden for me compared to in campus which I had I 6 sections under with 4 Grade 4

sections and 2 Grade 5 sections.

As I observed Mrs. Borres classes I cannot helped to compare the students not the

physical appearances but the class behaviour. There are sections that seem to be easy

to handle but there are also sections that really challenges your patience as a teacher.

The good thing I saw to the students that were very participative and the lesson whether

it is individual task and their favourite is group task which I was impressed, so can see

the team work and cooperation within the group members. In building rapport to my

students as much as I can I let myself get closed to my students, I always talk to them,

laugh with them and be with them. I’m doing this to make my student comfortable with

me so that when I take over for the discussion they will respect and listen to me.

Before my first demonstration I already prepared my materials and visuals

aids needed in my lesson I really exerted effort in doing all. The manila paper and

marker becomes your buddies since there is no televisions and projectors in the

classrooms. I also submitted lesson plan beforehand she made some corrections but it

was just some technicalities and wording she also gave me a great feedback about my

lesson plan and advise some tips which I need to improve on. On the day of my demo I

prepare my things and went early to the class. As I start my class I introduce myself and

give a short personal background I also set rules to my class which basically a guide for

them to follow to maintain orderly class I also asked them if they are in favor about it or

can give suggestion and comments about it. Since no one has a problem about it so I

assume that everyone is in favour. During my demonstration everyone listen and very

participative in the recitations and activities. Whenever there is task whether individual

or group they still work it on seriously. But I can see that most students prefer working in

groups they seem very attentive and seriously sharing thoughts with their group mates.

After the demonstrations with all the 4 sections my mentor and I had a little post cone

where she praise me for a job well done and add some comments which I take it

positively as a student-teacher who is still learning. As time goes by I become more

responsible which I knew a teacher must possess learn so sacrifice time to sleep in

order to make lesson plans and teaching materials. I also learn to wake up early every

day since it’s a little bit far from my residence. But that sacrifice won’t really matter if you

can see your students smiling and learning it felt like all the stresses drifted away. The
warm hugs and big smiles of the students became my happy pill it gives me motivation

to be better teacher someday.

Being a student teacher in Barrio Luz Elementary School gave me

opportunity to work with children which came from different walks in life. In terms of their

academic performance in school you can really notice the gap of comprehension in the

private and public students but I don’t take it negatively I take it as a challenge when I

know the role of a teacher is to eradicate ignorance. I really stop down to their level and

guide them in going up. You can really see in their eyes the motivation and

perseverance in learning. As a teacher you must guide them in by helping them through

giving good education they deserve. As a 21st century teacher it is our role to facilitate

students to be a life-ling learners by providing them better teaching strategies in order

for them to discover learning on their own. In my almost three weeks of stay in my first

mentor I go to love my students since we already built a bond. Even though some

students were hard to get along. As time goes by I bid my goodbye to my students since

we will be shifting another mentor and I was assigned under Mrs. Mercedita Lora’s

internship which she handle Grade 4 Filipino and her advisory also is grade 4. I felt sad

and happy in the same time. Sad because I will definitely miss my students and of

course Mrs. Borres was so kind so me she treats me very well she even gave me food

more often. Happy since its gonna be a new environment or classroom for me and new

students. New stories of life to discover. As I began my first day in Grade 4 Lora I can

help but to miss my former students. But I guess it’s part of being a teacher where your

students will change every academic year. Grade 4 students are still childish have a

short attention span. They are very kinaesthetically inclined; they love moving around

and making actions. I also felt a very warm welcome form them since it’s there first time

to have a student teacher in their section. The student are giving me wide smile and

their cutest hello’s and hi’s. As I observe the class they are participative yet there are

instances that make them noisy. They sometimes lack of attention during discussions,

sometimes became the headache of the teacher. But I know and I believe that these

students only need proper guidance and discipline. In order for them to be a responsible

students with attitude and possess good values.

To sum up everything, being a student teacher in public school made you feel the

important role of a teacher which is to give hope and motivation to students. These

diverse students came different economic status with different life stories to tell and with

one goal and this it to achieve their different goals in life. There are students who are

always absent in the class and just to know that they helped their mother doing

laundries for their living there are also student who was absent because she was asked

by her mother to babysit her younger sibling for the reason that the mother was busy

earning money. This part made me question to myself how can I help these students to

never give up and continue dreaming no matter how hard their life is. I believe that

teacher is the catalyst of change and brings hope to every student. Through my strong

dedication and big heart in teaching I hope I can make a difference to these students

some I know and I believe that these students became somebody in the future. We had

this theme when we had our Edtech which highlights the role of a teacher itself. Where

we compare it to a metamorphosis “A Teacher Opens the Mind, Touches the Heart and

Allow them to Fly” this theme really made an impact to me as a future teacher. If I relate

this in our experience as a practicum intern this give us a broad view where teaching or

being a teacher is nit an easy task it requires a lot of patience and understanding. You

have to reach out to the children in order for you to know them better. You should break

down the boundaries so that children will feel free to approach in you. Teacher and

children will have a harmonious relationship if they have good communication. A

teacher is always a teacher wherever he/she goes. A teacher is a role model so, he/she

must be responsible on how he/she act and speak because the students will inculcate

what they hear and say from their teacher. As a practicum intern I should practice

proper etiquette and displays professionalism since we are rounded with teachers,

parents as well as children. I must not forget that I also carry the name of the school as

a practicum intern I should display what is a Carolinian teacher should possess. Where I

should practice Education with a Mission. I ought not just to teach the knowledge but

also inculcate the idea of evangelization, values and reaching out to the community. I

do motivate students so that they will do thing with a good purpose. I also push or

encourage students to become the better version of them with and always bring out the

best in them
Staying Barrio Luz Elem. School for about 2 months would be one of my most

unforgettable experience as a student’s teacher. I made new friends with my students

and shared moments with them. As soon to be teacher I hope I can fulfil the duties and

responsible embodied as a teacher where a teacher’s purpose is not to create students

image, but develop a students who can create their own image. Finally, a teacher is

helping to fix his/her student’s wings and teach them to fly. Because great teacher have

high expectation to his/her students. A teacher will be happy seeing his/her former

students making their names, flying their dreams. It was all possible because of a

teacher to help develop their wings.
