INTRODUCTION

PM Modi had visited Kazakhstan for two days. The main aim of the visit was to attend the SCO
summit. SCO or Shanghai Cooperation Organisation was announced by leaders of
China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan on 15th June,2001; signed in June
2002; and came into force on 19th September,2003.

PM Modi’s visit was a historical visit. With the support of Russia, India has become a member of
SCO and so India was a part of the SCO summit.

Mr. Modi also had bilateral talks with Nursultan Nazarbayev, the President of Kazakhstan and
Chinese President Xi Jinping. Pakistan has also become a member of SCO with the support of China
and so Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was also present there. However, there were no talks
held between India and Pakistan.

The main highlights of the visit were as follows-

A. Both the Prime Ministers (India & Kazakhstan) held extensive talks and discussed upon ways
to advance cooperation between India and Kazakhstan. PM Modi termed the meeting to be
very fruitful.
B. PM Modi expressed his delight over the level of enthusiasm with which people of Kazakhstan
took part in International Yoga Day.
C. PM Narendra Modi also spoke at the Nazarbayev University in Astana. The university, PM
said, reflected the vision of President Nazarbayev that education was the foundation of a
nation's progress and leadership. Shri Modi also took note of Kazakhstan's generosity in
making way for India's bid for membership of the UN Security Council in 2011-12.
D. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated ‘India-Kazakhstan Centre of excellence in
Information and Communication Technology.’
E. PM Modi talked about creation of an Asian century. No east, no west, north or south; rather
one unified Asia.
F. PM Modi took part in India-Kazakhstan business roundtable, he interacted with CEOs and
other business leaders of both the Nations. He called for stepping up economic engagement
between India and Kazakhstan. Shri Narendra Modi also urged Kazakh companies to invest in
India. Space, cyber security, health and infrastructure sectors were other highlights of the
business meet.
G. Both the Prime Ministers launched the first exploratory drilling of Satpayev oil block by OVL
and KazMunaiGaz.
It was the first ever expansion of China dominated security grouping which is seen as a counterweight
to NATO. In his address at the yearly Summit of the SCO in the Kazakh capital, Modi said India's
entrance into the SCO family will give another force to the gathering in managing terrorism and other
pressing challenges faced by the region. He also spoke on the need for enhancing connectivity in the
region and said it was the key for boosting trade and investment. He also emphasised that India and
China should tap their potential in participation, reinforce correspondence and coordination in global
undertakings, regard each other's center concerns and properly handle their question.

International Relations and Strategies

India and Kazakhstan, both share common views about the need to have mutually advantageous
bilateral relations and friendship with each other. India was the first country to recognise the
independence of Kazakhstan in 1992. Several high level visits have been exchanged between India
and Kazakhstan on a regular basis to strengthen their diplomatic ties. India was the first country
outside Commonwealth Independent States (CIS) region which was visited by Kazakhstan in the year
1992. And in 1993, Indian Prime Minister Mr Narsimha Rao visited Kazakhstan which gave push to
their relations. And after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, their relations are even
stronger.

Some gains from Kazakhstan 2017 visit are:

1. India became permanent member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

2. SCO will help India in establishing better trade and economic ties with other member countries.

3. All member nations will work together to control terrorism in the Eurasia region.

4. After SCO membership, India is likely to follow Tashkent based Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure
and join the other member nations to conduct military exercise.

5. PM Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev in
Astana to discuss the ways by which both countries may expand their ties.

6. India is planning to build 10 new nuclear reactors with combined capacity of 7000 MW. India has a
goal to obtain 25% of its electricity from nuclear power by 2050. So India will deal with Kazakhstan
for getting uranium. Kazakhstan is a leading economy if we talk about uranium production.
Impact of this visit
This visit was very fruitful for India. Uranium deal specially will help India a lot. Uranium will be
used to product atleast 25% of electricity by 2050. Defence will also get better seeing the previous
visits also to Kazakhstan.

PM Modi also interacted with CEOs and other business leaders of both the Nations. He called for
stepping up economic engagement between India and Kazakhstan. He also urged Kazakh companies
to invest in India. Space, cyber security, health and infrastructure sectors were other highlights of the
business meet which are very advantageous for India.

This SCO submit also shows that Russia is actually a supporter of India. Today India is also a part of
SCO because of Russia only. So we can say that it is a very great and fruitful sign for India.
