Convert Google *.kmz or *.kml file to Format for Importing into Civil 3D

(For the use of creating Civil 3D Cogo Points)

1. Go to http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/

2. On the Home Page you will see “GPS Visualizer: Do-It-Yourself Mapping”. Under that click on
“Convert to Plain Text”.

3. Click browse to select your *.kmz file. Change to the following RED arrows. Then click Convert.

4. Click on your specific file to download.

5. You now have a *.csv of your *.kmz file.
6. There is a little house cleaning we need to do to the *.csv file before importing into Civil 3D.
There are a couple of things that are not allowed in the file for import. 1. Remove all headers in
the file. 2. No spaces in rows. What we are trying to create is a PNEZD, comma delimited file,
of some type. But in our case we are going to create a P-Lat-Long-Z-D. We are replacing
Northing for Latitude and Easting for Longitude.

7. The above screen shot shows how it was downloaded from GPS Visualizer. Take note that the
Lats and Longs are in Decimal Degree format!

8. The above screenshot shows how the file should look after it’s been cleaned up in Excel. We
now have a Point – Lat – Long – Elevation – Description, (PLatLonZD, comma delimited) file
format.
9. Next open up Civil 3D. Assign the Drawings Coordinate System. In my case it will be CO83-CF,
(NAD 83, Colorado State Plane, Central Zone, Feet).
10. Create a new Point File Format. Go to Settings Tab in Toolspace > Point > Point File Formats,
now right click the PNEZD (comma delimited), and Copy…..

11. Click on Format Name and rename it to something meaningful. Click on the Northing Header
and change DECDEG Latitude, also change Precision to 8 or 9. Do the same thing for The Easting
Header, and change to DECDEG Longitude, also change Precision to 8 or 9.

12. The completed file format should look like the above screen shot. Make sure you check the box
with Coordinate zone transform! Change to LL84 (stands for Lat, Long, 84, most *.kmz files will
be like this). Also change the Default file extension: to *.csv. Then click OK.

13. Go to the Insert Tab in the Ribbon > Import Panel > Points from File… Click on the plus sign to
browse to the file. Select your new Point File Format. Check the box under Advanced options to
“Do coordinate transformation if possible”. Then click OK. Zoom Extents in the drawing and
make sure you check the Lat-Long of one of the points, and make sure that the transformation
was done properly.
