Lesson plan

Class : primary 4 Date: 24/01/2018 Duration: 45 mins

Class profile:
27 students ages 10 – 11. Their proficiency in the English Language
is good but their scientific and general knowledge are limited
Time-table fit:
In the previous lesson: The Ss learned about the measuring tools.
In this lesson: They will learn about the matter and its states.
In the following lesson: The Ss will learn physical and chemical change.
Measurable objectives:
Given flash cards of different objects, SS should be able to classify them
into 3 groups represents the 3 states of matter and then form the word
(solid, liquid or gas) within 10 minutes. (Cognitive domain 5: evaluate)
Given worksheets Ss should be able to match the object with its right
state within 3 minutes. (Cognitive domain1: remember)
Other learning domains:
Move around while they're forming the word in the less guided activity
(psychomotor)
Compete during the two activities (affective)
Background knowledge:
Students already had a general concept about matter when they learned
the measuring tools in the previous session.
Anticipated problems:
Academic:
1) Ss may not understand what the volume is.
Solution: clear the information by sitting on the seat and then say now
it's occupied by me.
Disciplinary:
1) Ss may cause a noise during the less guided activity.
Solution: encourage them by the happy and sad face list.
Materials and Visual Aids:
1. Course book and workbook.
2. Lesson plan notebook.
3. White board markers.
4. Flash cards of different states of matter.
5. 3 balloons filled with wood cube, water and air for the lead in.
6. Work sheets for the guided activity.
7. Power point for the presentation stage
https://www.emaze.com/@AOOZWORTQ .
8. A picture for the warmer game.
9. A short videos to illustrate solid, liquid and
gas.
(It is attached to the Ppt.)
10. Three different containers to illustrate the
shape and volume change.

Stage Aim Procedure Students' Time

interaction
Warmer to help SS put aside their "what in the box " 2 mins
daily distractions game
and focus on the subject
Recycling To make sure SS have Short questions to revise 3 mins
the needed background the measuring tools.
knowledge
Lead in To capture the students Devide the ss into groups consists 7 mins
attention to the new of 3 and give each group the 3
lesson balloons which filled with wood,
water and air.
Presentation To illustrate the matter T: what can you see inside the red 15 mins
and its three states. Balloon?
Ss: something hard.
T: what about the blue one?
Ss: water or milk or it can be juice.
T: good , and the yellow one?
Ss: there is nothing in there.
T: focus ,there is something in there
Ss:air..
T:excellent, now the three things in
the balloon are different?
Ss:yes
T: bravo, but they are similar in one
thing they are all..
SS: things..
T:or..
Ss: objects.
T: or..
Ss: materials..
T: excellent ..in science there is
another nice name for materials.
.which is matter.
(starting the PowerPoint)
Elicit the definitions T: so , mattter is
Ss: Everything around us
T: Excellent, everything that has
a mass and occupies a space.
T: what does it means it has a mass?
When you go to the market to buy
Tomatoes what do you tell the buyer?
I need tomato..
Ss: no I need one kilo
T: nice so the mass of the tomato is
one kilo so the…
Mass: is the amount of matter in
an object.
T: what does it means it occupies
a space?
Ss: it fill a space.
T: nice,so,if I sit on that chair can
Hadeel sit on it?
Ss: no.
T: why?
Ss: because you're sitting on it.
T: very good, which means it is…
Ss: occupied by you.
T: excellent, that my volume.
Volume: it is the space occupied by a
matter.
T:the matters on the balloon are
different because each one represent
state of matter.
The red balloon contain solid
T one student to help in the next step
 cut the balloon and get the
wood cube out
 put the wood into the first
container
T asks: does the shape and volume
of the wood change?
Ss: no.
Then replace the wood into the
Second and third container..
The ss will observe that neither the
Shape nor the volume has changed.
So, solids have definite shape and
Volume.
Repeat the same steps with the liquid
State
Liquids have definite volume and
Indefinite shape
( it takes the shape of the container)
The gaseous state
(ask another student to help)
T: can you please press the balloon
so hard, does the shape changed?
Ss:yes
T: the volume changed too or not?
Ss:yes
So, gases have indefinite shape and
volume.
Concept To check that SS T:now,we've learned that the 5 mins
understood Matter is…..
checking Ss: everything that has a mass and
occupies a space.
T: very good, the matter has 3 states ………
Ss: solid, liquid and gas
T: excellent ,solid has
Ss: definite shape and volume.
T: and liquid has
Ss: indefinite shape and definite
volume
T: good, what about gas?
Ss: indefinite shape and volume
Blackboard for SS to refer to later Elicit the board work while writing. 5 mins
(Board plan is on the last page)
consolidation
Guided To make SS remember Clean the board before beginning 5 mins
what they learned this activity
Production with T’s help Instructions:
& guidance  worksheet activity
 Students work in pairs to match
the matters to the correct
state.

Activity time 5 min.
 Check instructions
 Give them the handouts
 Monitor providing help
whenever needed.
 Feedback is taken in 2 min.
Activity Target: ( knowledge &
remember)

Less guided To make SS apply what Instructions: 12 mins

they learned with  Now it’s time to have some fun
Production minimum T guidance  You are going to work in groups.
 Each group will take flashcards
of different objects.
 Decide what state do you have
and form the name of the state
by using the letters written on
the back.
 you have 5 minutes to finish the
activity.
 Check instructions
 begin the activity
 feedback is taken in 2 minutes
(Activity Target: evaluation)
Concluding To check & summarize Summing up: 3 mins
the lesson Matter: everything that has a mass
and occupies a space.
Mass: the amount of matter
in an object.
Volume: the space occupied
by a matter.
Matter has 3 states: solid,
liquid and gas.
Solid:definite shape and volume
Liquid: indefinite shape and
definite volume
gas: indefinite shape and
volume
Unguided To give SS practice Homework: 1 min
at home Do the exercises in the student’s book P18.
