Course Objective:
 To make aware about the different construction materials with their uses.
 To give knowledge about concrete and its properties
 To give basic idea about the Non-destructive testing
CONTENTS

Building Stones: Classification of Rocks- Physical classification, Chemical classification,


Geological classification. Characteristics of stones – Marble, Kota stone, Granite, Sand, Trap,
Basalt stone, Lime stone and Slate, Requirements and identification of good building stones,
various uses of stones in construction.
Bricks and Tiles:Introductionto bricks, Raw materials for brick manufacturing and properties
of good brick, Manufacturing of bricks, Classification, specifications and Testing of bricks. Types
of tiles- Ceramic, terrazzo, PVC tiles, Vitrified tiles and Paver blocks.Stacking of bricks and tiles.
Lime:Introduction, Classification and types of lime as per BIS Code, Calcination and slaking of
lime.
Wood Based Products: basic identification, Seasoning of timber, Properties of timber, Defects
in timber, decay in timber and their preservation as per BIS. Other wood based products, their
brief description of manufacture and uses.
Paints and Varnishes: Introduction, purpose and use of paints, Types, ingredients, properties
and uses of oil paints, water paints and cement paints.Types, properties and uses of
varnishes.Miscellaneous Materials:Plastics Introduction and uses, Fibre Sheets and their
manufacture process, insulating materials for sound and thermal insulation, Water proofing,
termite proofing and fire resistance materials, Materials used in interior decoration works like
POP, methods of doing POP.
Concrete: Definition and Uses. Ingredients of Concrete: Cement-raw materials, flow diagram
of manufacturing of cement, physical properties of cement; different types of cement, Different
tests on cement Aggregates- Classification and Characteristicsof aggregates, grading of
aggregates. Water: Quality requirements as per IS: 456-2000.
Water Cement Ratio:Hydration of cement principle of water-cement ratio, Duff Abram’s
Water-cement ratio law: Limitations of water-cement ratio law and its effects on strength of
concrete.
Properties of Concrete: In plastic state, in hardened state. Introduction to Admixtures
(chemicals and minerals) for improving performance of concrete.
Special Concretes (features only): Ready mix concrete,Fibre reinforced concrete, Polymer
Concrete, Fly ash concrete, Silica fume concrete.
Concreting Operations: Storing of Cement at different location, Storing of Aggregate: Storing of
aggregate on site, batching of cement, Mixing- hand mixing, Machine Mixing. Transportation of
concrete, Placement of concrete, Compaction, Finishing concrete slabs, Curing of concrete,
Jointing, defects in concrete and their methods to repairs.
Introduction to NDT on Concrete: Infrared Thermography, Ground Penetrating Radar,
Radiographic Methods, Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, Rebound Hammer Testing, Volume Of
Permeable Voidsetc

2. To determine the crushing strength, water absorption and efflorescence of bricks
