This is regarding bunker calculations, density correction using one of the many

available methods.

Condition:

HFO Tank No.1

Sounding = 3.24 m

Trim = 1m by aft

Temperature = 36 Degree Celsius

Density @ 15 Degree Celsius = 0.9920 (from bunker delivery report)

We need to find the amount of oil in the tank in Metric Tons

The quantity in metric tons =

volume of oil in cubic meters x VCF x WCF

VCF – Volume Correction Factor

WCF – Weight Correction Factor.

So we have to first understand what is VCF and WCF.

Volume Correction Factor (VCF)/ Weight Correction Factor: It is the change in the
volume of the oil with respect to temperature. It is determined by laboratory analysis or
by using standardized computer arithmetic. It is usually given in a table booklet with
relative density to the temperature. The relative density of any oil will be mentioned in
Density @ 15 Degree Celsius and for getting the Density @ required Temperature the
Volume correction factor is used.

Now Calculating Volume of oil in cubic meters:

From sounding table:

E = 3.24 (required)

Volume = {[(E-A)/(B-A)]x (D-C)} + C

Volume ={((3.24-3.20)/(3.25-3.20)) x (162.30-157.20)} + 157.20

= 161.28 Cubic meters

Explanation:

E = 3.24 (required)

E= { [(D-C)/(B-A)] * (E-A) }+ c

Volume : { [ (152.30 – 157.20)/ (3.25 – 3.20) ] * (3.24 – 3.20) } + 157.20

= 161.28.

To Find MT : VCF * WCF * Cubic meter

VCF = It is taken from the ASTM

Petroleum Measurement Table 54B. From
Table 54B,

Density
@ 15 Degree Celsius = 0.9920,
Density
@ 36 Degree Celsius = 0.9857.

WCF = It is taken from the ASTM

Petroleum Measurement Table 56D, (Or)

WCF = Density @ 15 Degree

Celsius – 0.0011.

WCF
= 0.9920 – 0.0011

= 0.9909.

The
quantity of oil in metric tons = 161.28 x 0.9857 x 0.9909

= 157.53 MT
