CUPPING/HIJAMA

Cupping is a therapeutic process of

removing unclean blood from the body . It is a form of medical treatment which has been
recommended by Shariáh.

Rasulullah(Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) underwent cupping many times.

During the battle of Khaibar in 7 AH with the Jews, a Jewish woman prepared some meat
which she filled with deadly poison and presented to Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi
Wasallam). (Bukhari). Upon tasting the meat the poison affected Rasulullah
(SallallaahuÁlayhi Wasallam) Rasulullah (Sallallaahu
Álayhi Wasallam) used to undergo cupping in order to relieve him from the effects of the
poison in his blood. (Shamaail Tirmidhi).

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) was once hurt on his leg. Hence (probably due to
the clogging of the blood), he underwent cupping on his leg. (Mishkãt p. 389)

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, ‘Jibraaeel (Álayhis salaam) repeatedly

emphasised upon me to resort to cupping to the extent that I feared that cupping will be made
compulsory.’ (Jamúl Wasaail p. 179).

Hadhrat Anas (Radhiallaahu Ánhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam)
said, ‘The best medicine is cupping.’ (Shamaail, chapter of Cupping)

Hadhrat Abu Kabsha (Radhiallaahu Ánhu) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu

ÁlayhiWasallam) used to undergo cupping on the head and between his shoulders and he
used to say, ‘Whosoever removes this blood, it will not harm him that he does not take any
other medical treatment.’ (Mishkãt p. 389)

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) praised a person who performs cupping, saying it
removes blood, lightens the back
and sharpens the eyesight (Jamúl Wasaail p. 179)

The above quoted Ahaadith are clear that cupping was practised by Rasulullah(Sallallaahu
Álayhi Wasallam) himself and strongly recommended by him.

The scholars advise that administering medicine requires medical expertise. Therefore, with
regard to any medical treatment recommended by Rasulullah
(Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam), due to health and medical intricacies, one must exercise
caution and consult with a physician.

Similarly, with regard to cupping, although it is strongly recommended by Rasulullah

(Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam), one must consult with a medical practitioner before
undergoing cupping.

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) has also given some guidelines regarding cupping.
Once he came across a fasting
person who underwent cupping and became weak. Hence, he said, ‘The person who
underwent cupping broke his fast.’ (Jamúl Wasaail p. 179)

Mullah Áli Qari (Rahmatullaahi Álayhi) while explaining the

Hadith states that since a person is already weak by fasting, undergoing cupping weakens him
further. Thus such a person due to feeling extremely weak may be
forced to break his fast.

He further states that in the light of the principle understood from the Hadith, cupping should
not be administered immediately after having a hot bath, or while the belly is full.

Hadhrat Abu Hurayra(Radhiallaahu Ánhu) reports that Rasulullah

(Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said: ‘One should not undergo cupping during the 13, 14 and
15 of the lunar month.’ Some Muhadditheen explain that on those days the full moon has a
gravitational impact on many things on earth. For example, the sea has high tides due to the
full moon. Similarly, the flowing of the blood is also affected and flows faster during the full
moon. One may loose much blood in these days if one
undergoes cupping. Therefore, Rasulullah(Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) advised that one
should undergo cupping on the 17, 19 and 21 of the lunar month. (Mishkãt p. 389).

Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) advised that cupping should not be done on a
Tuesday, since there is a certain time on a
Tuesday that flowing blood does not stop.(Mishkãt p. 389).

Rasulullah (SallallaahuÁlayhi Wasallam) also advised that cupping should not be done on
Saturdays and Wednesdays as this could lead to leprosy. (Mishkãt p. 389n

WHY NUMBING CREAMS MUST NEVER BE USED IN HIJAMAH!!!!!!.

I have had many patients and therapists asking me if they can use topical ointments such as
numbing creams to avoid pain in the process of scarification (incisions).
I have outlined below the physiological aspects as to why we must not use numbing creams
whilst administering hijamah treatment.
These numbing creams are referred to as “Local Anaesthetics” or topical Anaesthetics.

What is a local anaesthetic?

Local anaesthetic drugs are used widely for the provision of anaesthesia and analgesia both
intra- and post-operatively. Understanding the pharmacology of these agents as a group, as
well as the differences between specific drugs, enables the anaesthetist to use them safely to
maximum effect.
Definition of a local anaesthetic

A local anaesthetic can be defined as a drug which reversibly prevents transmission of the
nerve impulse in the region to which it is applied, without affecting consciousness. There are
many drugs which exert local anaesthetic activity in addition to their main clinical uses, but
here we shall focus on those drugs which are principally used for their local anaesthetic
properties.

The action of local anaesthetic on the nervous system

Local anaesthetics disrupt ion channel function within the neurone cell membrane preventing
the transmission of the neuronal action potential. This is thought to occur via specific binding
of the local anaesthetic molecules (in their ionised form) to sodium channels, holding them in
an inactive state so that no further depolarisation can occur. This effect is mediated from
within the cell; therefore the local anaesthetic must cross the cell membrane before it can
exert its effect.
A second mechanism is also thought to operate, involving the disruption of ion channel
function by the incorporation of local anaesthetic molecules into the cell membrane (the
membrane expansion theory). This is thought to be mediated mainly by the unionised form
acting from outside the neuron. Nerve fibres differ in their sensitivity to local anaesthetics.
Small nerve fibres are more sensitive than large nerve fibres while myelinated fibres are
blocked before non-myelinated fibres of the same diameter. Thus the loss of nerve function
proceeds as loss of pain, temperature, touch, proprioception, and then skeletal muscle tone.
This is why people may still feel touch but not pain when using local anaesthesia.

The affects of topical anaesthetics on the physiology of blood vessels

Normally, blood vessels supplying the skin provide nutrition, allow for tissue metabolism,
and provide an important way to maintain a normal body temperature. Specialized skin blood
vessels constrict or narrow in response to cold temperatures. This reaction, called
“vasoconstriction,” decreases blood flow to the skin, which helps to minimize heat loss and
preserve a normal internal or “core” temperature. In warm temperatures, these same blood
vessels dilate, allowing heat to leave the body. The blood vessels in the skin that react to
temperature changes are called thermoregulatory vessels. These specialized blood vessels are
controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, the same system that reacts when we are
nervous or upset emotionally. This explains why both cold and emotional stress can trigger
vasoconstriction of these blood vessels, causing cold fingers and toes. Thus, cold hands and
feet occur normally in everybody when we are exposed to cold temperatures.

However when the mechanisms that control vasoconstriction or vasodilation are manually
altered these blood vessels recess deeper and further into the muscle tissue. This in turn
causes vessels to constrict further once more in an exaggerated way in response to the action
of the local anaesthetic.

Local anaesthetics and Hijamah.

Severe vasoconstriction reduces blood flow to the skin of the affected areas, causing the skin
surface to feel cold to touch and to have a white colour. The pale white colour is due to
virtually no blood flow to the skin. The skin then typically becomes a purplish-blue colour
(called acrocyanosis), as a reduced flow of blood through the skin returns. When the vessel
fully recovers, it dilates, allowing blood flow to resume; the skin may blush, becoming very
pink or red.

Conclusion
By considering the biomechanisms involved in the use of numbing creams , it has clearly
been deduced that their use in this therapy is completely irrelevant as it causes the recession
of blood vessels and the restriction of blood flow in the region to where it is exercised
therefore it would be impossible to exhume blood stasis in the area where hijamah is to
applied.
In such an event if any blood stasis was to be extracted then it would be negligible as
compared to hijamah conducted without the use of a topical local anaesthetic.
Vasoconstrictors are the most powerful numbing agent you’ll be able to use. Vasoconstrictors
include epinephrine, and they work by causing blood vessels to constrict which reduces
bleeding. These chemicals also slow down absorption, which means that, when mixed with
other numbing agents, they allow them to last longer because they cut down on bleeding and
swelling.
Hence It is non conducive if an anaesthetic (topical) was to be incorporated in this noble
therapy rendering the practice useless and defying the whole purpose of removing morbid
matter(blood stasis)
Then Allah knows best.

My experiences in Hijama or Cupping Therapy

September 28, 2014

Hi All,

|I started doing my Hijama or cupping therapy practice in Rawalpindi near scheme three
almost seven years back when i learnt this Sunnah way of treatment from a practitioner who
learned it from Dubai.

I think that Hijama is miraculous and its simply amazing .

During my seven years of practiser the results i found were almost amazing. From 10 patients
i treat almost 9 get the cure in first session.

I usually apply 4 to 5 cups during first session and prefer to do hijama on the Sunnah points
that are on the back side of the body.

The patients suffering from Sciatica, Black Magic, Or Nazr e Bad get instant results.
Sometimes the sciatica people are brought to us in a state that they cannot even walk but after
the session they return to their homes on their on feet.

I usually do one session of hijama in a month. The amount of blood that comes out is not too
much and you can say that it is less than a bottle and the patient does not feel any sort of
weakness.

But i have observed that if more than 3 cups are applied at same time, the patient gets faint
and feels nausea for only a short period of time. Than we give them juice or water and he is
back to normal again.

Patients of Hepitatas A,B and C and Sugar , also get cured due to hijama. The size of cancer
tumors also drop significantly after hijama sessions.

If a patient is telling about pain in specific part of body than its better to do hijama at that
point also.

There are no side affects of Hijama. The cuts of hijama are not very deep and they are
automatically cured in 2 to 3 days.

We have found that applying Honey after hijama is very beneficial as it is antiseptic.

One important thing every hijama therapist should remember is that the cuts should be
maximum in number and smallest in size. Many hijama practitioners often put large size cups
which is not good. It has two major drawbacks first is that it is more painful to the person who
is getting hijama secondly it takes more time for the cuts of hijama to heel if the cuts are
large.

So always remember put smaller sized cups.

treatment of depression, stress anxiety using hijama or cuppingMarch 2, 2016
