Scope
A supply chain is a network of supplier, manufacturing, assembly, distribution, and
logistics facilities that perform the functions of procurement of materials, transformation
of these materials into intermediate and finished products, and the distribution of these
products to customers. Supply chains arise in both manufacturing and service
organizations. Supply chain management (SCM) is a systems approach to managing the
entire flow of information, materials, and services from raw materials suppliers through
factories and warehouses to the end customer. Effective supply chain management is
the key to productivity and competitiveness of manufacturing and service enterprises.
The emergence of the Internet and other advances in information and communications
technologies has led to significant changes in the design and operation of supply chain
networks, with integration and automation as the key ingredients. Supply chains have
become ubiquitous and an understanding of supply chain management is extremely
important for today's industrial professionals, academics, research scholars and
graduate students. This short term course attempts to map the terrain of Supply Chain
Management for the benefit of both researchers and practitioners.

The Department of Industrial Engineering (DoIE) of College of Engineering Guindy,

Principal Faculty
A. “RAVI” RAVINDRAN
Dr. Ravindran is a Professor and the past Department Head of
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at the Pennsylvania
State University. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering with
honors from India. His graduate degrees are from the University of
California, Berkeley, where he received an M.S. and a Ph.D. in
Industrial Engineering and Operations Research.
Dr. Ravindran's area of specialization is Operations Research
with research interests in supply chain optimization multiple
criteria decision-making, financial engineering, and health planning. He has published
two major text books (Operations Research: Principles and Practice and Engineering
Optimization: Methods and Applications) and over 100 journal articles in operations
research. He has also published two handbooks on operations research in 2009,
Operations Research Methodologies and Operations Research Applications. His
forthcoming text book on Supply Chain Engineering: Models and Application will be
published by CRC Press in 2011. He was recognized in 2001 by the Institute of
Industrial Engineers with the Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator award for
significant contributions to the industrial engineering profession. He has been a
consultant to AT&T, General Motors, IBM, Kimberly Clark, General Electric, U.S.
Department of Transportation, the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association
and the U.S. Air Force.
