Table 2 shows the level of awareness on the top 5 most common classification of over

the counter drugs among Ilocano families. It can be seen that the total score for therapeutic
effects is 7,159 (22.5%) which falls within the range of slightly knowledgeable.
As to side effects, it is clearly reflected in the table that the total score is 365 (1.1%)
which falls under not knowledgeable.
In the table, it clearly shows that the top 5 highest classifications are those that have
intensive advertisements on televisions, posters, and radios. According to Mammoser, G.
(2017), over the counter drug or non-prescriptive drug manufacturers are free to declare the
benefits of their products without disclosing possible dangers as long as claims can be backed
up by studies. Also, he added that without mentioning any risks, then the public’s perception
becomes that there are no risks. Hence, it can be concluded that this is one reason why there’s
a higher score for known therapeutic effects rather than known side effects.
Moreover, it can be reflected that although therapeutic effects has higher score than side
effects, still, it is below from being knowledgeable. According to Brody, J. (2015), people use
over the counter drugs, primarily to treat specific ailments to which this is only known to the
consumer. For instance, a person believes that Biogesic is only to reduce fever and is not
applicable to any other symptoms.

Table 3 shows the over the counter drug that has ranked number 1 which is the
Biogesic. It can be seen in the table that Biogesic is primarily used to reduce fever with a score
of 252 and least used to relieve dysmenorrheal with a score of 74. According to Unilab, Biogesic
mainly serves the purpose in reducing fever which makes it famous to people. When a person
has fever, Biogesic is the immediate used drug. Nonetheless, this medication is not only limited
for reducing fever but can also aid in relieving headache, treat cold or flu, tooth ache and relieve
dysmenorrhea.
As to side effects of Biogesic, loss of appetite have the highest score which is 14 and
jaundice being the lowest which has a score of 0. According to WebMd, Biogesic has
substances that stwhich is imulate hunger hormones, primarily leptin which is being made by
the fat cells in the body that may decrease the person’s appetite. This happens, when the
person who takes the medication takes it in with the improper dosage (overdosage).
