LO3 - Evaluation

Weekly blog updates are required, as with every unit. Please remember to
take photos/screenshots as you film/edit. You might find it easier if you note
down a record of what you did each day in a diary form.

Please use the following guidance to help you with each week.

LO1 This learning objective was researching examples of

your specialism in practice
What have you been asked to I have been asked to analyse a few websites, which
do? has a focus of the way ‘Youth’ is portrayed in the
media. I have then been asked to analyse a couple
movies, which show ‘youth’ negatively, positively,
Morden, and old, this gave me an understanding of
what is stereotypical used to create the mise-en-scene
for these genres. I then have to think of two opening
scenes I can create for a negative and positive movie
about ‘youth’ using the mise-en-scene to show which
one is which.
How has researching key Researching and analysing movies with the same
examples of your specialism in specialism as me has developed my understanding as
practice developed your I now know what the stereotypical features are which
have been included in pretty much all the videos that
understanding?
I have analysed. I also know what the stereotypical
lighting and mise-en-scene should be if it is portraying
positive or negative. Negative being dark colours and
positive being bright vibrant colours.
How has analysing videos helped Analysing websites, which is talking about opinion on
you to increase your knowledge the youth, and how what the youth think of how the
of your specialism? media is portraying them as given me a bigger view of
my specialism as I have learnt what teenagers actual
feel like after seeing what the rest of the public are
seeing on the news. Although the media portrays
teenagers to be not bothered and criminals, there
reaction to seeing how the media portrays the says it
differently.
Did you encounter any problems I only encounted one problem which was I felt it was
when trying to analyse videos for hard to find a symbol of a code of conventions in the
your specialism? ‘Gangster paradise’ movie as it is a movie about
crimes so it should be a negative which would consist
dark scenes to show its going to be negative but
instead as it has a positive story line because doing
these crimes gets him out of poverty so there was bright
scenes. This confused me as it could be portrayed as a
negative as well a positive movie but the mise-en-
scene shows it to be positive by using face shot
camera angles to show emotion and bright vibrant
colours to show the scene to be warm and happy.
What have you done to I overcame this problem by looking at the movie and
overcome these issues? the mise-en-scene more and I realised the mise-en-
scene in the beginning of the movie is different from
the rest of the movie as the first scenes is darker lighting
and darker scenery, this could imply to the viewers that
the start of the film is bad, so it’ll show his poverty, and
then when he’s rich and powerful the mise-en-scene
gets lighter so show it being positive.
What will you implement into your I will use things that I have learnt by researching the
production from the research specialism in my production in order to make it the best
undertaken? I possibly can as well making it suit my genre and the
mise-en-scene. I have learnt that the mise-en-scene
really matters in productions to show viewers what kind
of film it is going to be just by looking at the mise-en-
scene. After researching and looking at examples, I
now know when I go to do my production I will have to
make the scene, which shows teenagers negatively
dark and bland to show viewers that it is going to be
negative. Then for the positive, I will use very bright and
vibrant colours to show that the film is going to be
showing teenagers positively. These are both
stereotypical ways to show both negative and positive
through the mise-en-scene.
High Grade Tips

Look to use these terms in order to improve the analysis of your own work.

Relevant and coherent – make sure your research sources are not just the same as the
media product you hope to make and talk about how they inform your planning.
Sustained – continue your research throughout the 4 week project and don’t just limit
yourself.
Efficient production against timescales – how is your planning helping you to meet your
deadline.

LO2 For this learning objective you worked on planning

and production
What did you learn from your By planning my production before any filming took
planning? place, I had learnt that the mise-en-scene for movies is
one of the most important aspects to get right in a film
as it makes the viewers know what the genre is and
what could be happening later in the film. For example
if I you was to watch a horror film you would expect the
horror scenes to be very dark and dull instead of vibrant
colours etc. So I learnt the stereotypical mise-en-scenes
for genre before filming. Once I had filmed my
production I have noticed that I have achieved this
goal by doing the research and being able to
understand stereotypical mise-en-scenes for each
genre of my productions.

(Screenshots to be added) This picture shows one of my

shots in the production that shows teenagers in a
positive way therefore the mise-en-scene should tell the
viewers that it is going to be positive. Stereotypical
factors to a positive mise-en-scene is bright vibrant
colours and in a peaceful location. As shown above I
have done this well as you can see in the shot it has
been filmed next to a river which is stereotypical a nice
relaxing and positive location. It was also been filmed
in the day so the scene is very light which is also a good
way to show positive as the stereotypical way to show
negative is dark scenes so having the opposite will show
positive. It being light by natural light (the sun), brings
out all the vibrant objects around the river for example
flowers, grass and trees. These all show stereotypical
factors to show positive through mise-en-scene so I
have achieve my goal very well in my opinion.
How will this be useful as your This will be useful for my productions as in my
production process continues? productions I really need to focus on the mise-en-scene
in my films as I have to make two films, one representing
teenagers in a positive way and the other representing
them in a negative way. So as they are the complete
opposite genre they will have completely different
mise-en-scenes. So having planned and researched
the different stereotypical mise-en-scenes for each
genre it is now useful to use while filming the
productions. Once I had filmed my production I have
realised I have done this well as I have shown the scene
to look negative using stereotypical factors I had found
out from researching the genres of my productions.
(Screenshots to be added)

this
screenshot shows the mise-en-scene in one of the
scenes of my productions which shows teenagers
negatively. I have filmed the scene outside at night so
the natural light makes the scene very dark a little hard
to see the actors, this links in with the mise-en-scene as
stereotypically in negative films they are dark to show
that something bad is going to happen so doing this as
made me achieve my goal of showing the film to be
negative through the mise-en-scene.
What genres/formats have you On my first production it was showing teenagers in a
chosen and why? positive way by the story line being about a group of
young college boys who live and breathe Football.
They was proud to say they were the best 5-a-side team
in the whole of the county in till they get defeated. This
film is going to show the viewers there mission to make
it to the top of the table again. This film has a genre of
‘Action Adventure’, which is a positive story line as they
play football which is positive as well as they face a
problem and they overcome it leaving them to be the
winners. So I have already achieved having a positive
genre and story line for my positive production. This
production will be an opening sequence for a twenty
minute production, making the opening scene being
three to five minutes long.

On my second production it was showing teenagers in

a negative way by the story line being about a boy who
lives in London and he has a group of mates who are in
a gang and he starts to get involved with gang
activities such as fighting. This film has the ‘Gangster’
Genre, which is a negative story line as it involves a lot
of crime and doing morally wrong activities. This
production will be an opening sequence for a twenty
minute production, making the opening scene being
three to five minutes long.
How much work did you Outside of college times I managed to get some work
complete outside of the lessons? done but I am a bit ashamed of this production and do
believe I could do a lot better but I had missed out on
a week of lessons as I was absent for personal issues. I
believe if I had not had that week off I may have been
able to make these productions better as well as get
them done in time. I might change a few things in my
production in later time as I believe I can do better but
at the moment I am very tied up with spare time to
shoot a video.
What issues did you encounter While planning my production I only encounted
whilst planning and how did you problem. This problem was I was finding it hard to find
overcome them? actors to be in my production. Although I had already
text four to five of my mates to ask if they will take place
in my production and they replied saying they could do
that when it came to the day of filming they weren’t
able to meet up and shoot so this obviously set me back
a little bit as I wasn’t able to film the day I wanted but I
managed to sort it as two days searching I finally came
up with a group of mates who was all willing to be in the
production, and they came through on the day I told
them to. I feel like this problem wasn’t my fault but if I
was to do this again or in later productions I will literally
make sure if they say there coming they have to come,
so I’ll keep on reminding them.
How did you find the filming and I found filming my production was fine however I had a
editing process? problem with finding time to start the filming process. I
had this problem as I was absent from college for a full
week for personal reasons so by the time I came back
to college I was behind on work. This is also my
reasoning for not being able to film one of my
productions before the deadline. If I was to do this
production again I would make sure the time I was
absent was on a different date but there was nothing I
could do about it this time. However, when I did get the
chance to film I feel I am more experienced with
cameras as I had a lot of experience using a camera
over the summer. I feel like the shots I had used look very
professional and suit the genres of my production
based on stereotypical factors I had picked out from
my research. For example one of the shots I had used
while filming suits the genre of a ‘Gangster’ movie as a
stereotypical shot for a gangster movie is to look up at
the actor, the camera looking up at them shows they
are powerful and on camera it makes them look bigger
that way. (screenshots to be added) So this shows that
my researched as made me achieve one of my goals
with this production by making the shots of the
production suit the genre that it has been given which
was a ‘Gangster’ Genre. So I feel I have worked very
well in filming my production.

The editing process I found pretty straight forward as I

wasn’t intending on using transactions, edits or audio
effects to my opening scene productions as I feel for
movies it doesn’t really work and distracts the viewers
from what’s going on in the movie and makes them
more interested on the visuals, and obviously with a
movie the story line is more important. I also had
struggles with finding time to edit so I feel some of it is a
little bit rushed as I wanted to hit the deadline. Again if
I was to do this again I would make sure I’m not absent
for personal reasons during production times.
Did you encounter any problems I did encounter a few problems while filming my
during filming/editing? How did productions. The first problem was I was absent from
you overcome them? college for personal reasons for a whole week so in that
week I had missed out on a weeks’ worth of work which
set me behind for when it came to the time to film. I
overcame this problem by staying in extra hours to get
the work done by the deadline. My second problem
was that the actors I had set up and planned to be in
my production, even though I had text them a few days
before asking if they could do it and they replied saying
they could, they couldn’t. I overcame this problem by
in the next couple days after I managed to get
together the same amount of actors but this time they
was actually on being in my production. Next time I do
this production I will text the actors I have planned to
use every day making sure they aren’t going to drop
out on me. My third problem I faced was that one of
the days I wanted to film my production on after my
actors dropping out on me, it snowed and I didn’t want
snow to be in my production as I feel I focused mostly
on the mise-en-Scene on my production and having
snow in the production really wouldn’t suit the
stereotypical factors of mise-en-scene in the genres. If I
was to do this next time I will look at the weather
forecast before I set a date to go film on instead of
waiting till the day to find out.
How do you feel your product I feel like my final productions has a lot of similarities to
compares to existing professional some of the professional’s productions I was
products? researching while I was doing my planning. For
example my productions has followed the mise-en-
scene factors that have been also included in the
professional productions. For example with the positive
production and the positive productions I was
researching they both have mise-en-scenes which
include, bright light, vibrant colours and peaceful
locations. As shown in screenshots below.

This is the professional production and as you can see

you can see bright light, vibrant colours and peaceful
locations. The sun is making the scene bright and light
which is then reflecting on the flowers and scenery to
give off vibrant colours such as Green. He is also next to
the coast which is stereotypically and calm and
relaxing place. Then my production is below and as you
can see it also consists bright light, vibrant colours and
peaceful locations.

This is shown by the sunlight given the scene bright light

which also gives off vibrant colours from the flowers and
grass. It is also by a river which is a peaceful location.
At times I fount it difficult to meet the codes and
coventions to the mise-en-scenes for different genres.
For example when I wanted to shoot my opening scene
for a production which has a genre of ‘Gangster’ it was
snowing on that day and as I was focusing on the mise-
en-scene mostly for my prodctuions I felt like I really
shouldn’t shoot in the snow as it really wouldn’t suit the
genre so I overcame this by waiting a few days for the
snow to go and I waited on the weather forecast for a
day which was clear. I believe my prodctuion suits the
target audience for my production as I was making two
prodctuions showing teenagers in a poostive way as
well as a negative way. As both prodctuions are
protraying teenagers my target audience is obviously
for the teenager age group. I have made my
prodctuion to suit this audience in the postive
prodctuion by using teenagers as the main characters
as wewll as them being college students who live and
breath football which is also one of the biggest
teenager hobbies in the world, so I feel doing both of
these things has made me achieve my target audiece.
I also bleieve I achieved my goal of my ‘gangster’
genre prodctuion as again it is portraying teenagers so
it must have a teenager audience. I have done this by
using teenage main characters as well in the
production I used popular clothing brands for
teenagers which also suits the genre as designer
clothing is also a sterotypical gangster factor. If there is
anything I felt fell short in both my prodctuoions was the
length of them. Both of my prodctuions are around
about two minutes long each which wasn’t planned, I
wanted to do at least threee minutes of each
prodctuion but after editing it all I noticed that it only
cvame to two minutes each prodctuion. So from this I
have learnt that when you write a script one page
normnally means 45 seconds of film, so when I go to do
this next time or if I was going to do this prodctuion
again I would write a bit mnore script for it.
What area are you looking to While planning my research I was given written
improve on in your next feedback by my teacher telling me things I have done
production? well as well as what I need to improve. I was told I had
a good amount of research and it was laid out in a
visual and professional way. I was then given a couple
movie names to look at the opening scenes of them
and analyse them. The three movies all were all
different but had similar genres of ‘Youth Rebellion’,
however two were Morden movies showing teenagers
in a positive way as well as a negative way. I was also
given a movie, which shows ‘Youth Rebellion’, but it
was from over 30 years ago, this shows the difference
from modern and olden day productions. I analysed all
of these movies by their mise-en-scene, story line, shots
and editing. By getting this feedback and for my
planning it has made me research harder so I feel I
have a lot better understand about finding out factors
of movies which makes it suit its genre. So getting this
feedback did help a lot.
During the planning stage, I was given verbal feedback
by my teacher, which was telling me that I have
produced the planning booklet nicely by not using the
template given and making my own to make it more
eye appealing. I also had put a good amount of effort
into making the planning booklet as well has having a
good amount of what I had researched into my
planning booklet. However, on the feedback I was told
to work a bit quicker and to get it all done by the
deadline. I overcame this problem by working harder in
lessons and not getting easily distracted, this allowed
me to get the work finished on time. I didn’t worry about
the amount of feedback I got given as I have had a lot
of experience with planning booklets before so I find
them pretty straight forward to do.
During my time filming and editing I also got written
feedback from my teacher, which was telling me that I
have done it nicely and I have achieved my goals for
the target audience as well the mise-en-scene for both
genre of productions. These were my main focus on
these productions. So that was good feedback to hear.
I was also told that on my production I need to make it
longer as after I edited all of my footage together, as it
only came to two minutes, although I wanted it to be
at least three minutes. So I overcame this problem by
getting footage from YouTube of people playing 5 a
side football in an Astro football pitch. This was added
in to clips of the main male walking along the pitch in
his football kit, followed with an opening movie
monolog which is suited to the positive story line. After
adding these clips to my production it made my
production longer than what it was so this feedback did
help a lot.
After filming and editing the negative production I
realised what I was going to do next time I make a short
film which has a specialism of teen youth. I feel like the
whole production shows a lot of drugs to what I wanted
it to. Although it does need to be shown as it is one of
the stereotypical factors of a gritty youth production. I
have wrote a disclaimer underneath my production as
well to insure all viewers that it isn’t real drugs being
used and I have told them the reason I have done this
is because it links in with the stereotypical factors.
