East cholera epidemic; but was political coz ship was carrying 643 Chinese coolies
(cheap labor displacing Whites)… election was near, just about a week
13.1. In SF: at the Palace Hotel at 312 Stockton St., $4/day; Market Street – best street;
Leland Stanford – millionaire senator who founded the university; under Grover
Cleveland
13.2. Across the American continent: Oakland → Sacramento → Reno → Ogden →
Denver → Omaha → Chicago → Boston → Albany → crossed Hudson River
13.3. Rizal in NY: May 13 (called it the “big town”; inspired by the Memorial to George
Washington, “he is a great man who, I think, has no equal in this country” (letter to Ponce
on July 27, 1888); left for Liverpool on May 16, 1888 aboard “City of Rome” (world’s 2nd
largest ship next only to Great Eastern)
