Anthony Ravasio – CAP (sophomore)

I am interested in sports journalism. In order to do this, you need at least a bachelor’s

degree and/or a degree in broadcasting or mass media and broadcasting. When completing
these majors, you also have options for other careers as well. Through these majors, you can
become a regular journalist, a broadcaster, a sports broadcaster, and other media-like
professions. Some skills necessary for these fields are strong knowledge of the English
language, strong knowledge of media and communications techniques, and basic knowledge of
telecommunications.
Sports journalists cover a wide variety of topics in the wide world of sports. Most have
deadlines to make to publish articles or other inquiries by a certain time. They work normal
business hours, but most do not have a certain time of day in which they only work on it. This
job usually takes up most hours of the day. Their salary varies from an entry-level salary
between 54,000-75,000.
I am preparing myself for these possible careers by taking all of my core classes, and
also taking electives such as Journalism I and II, Sports Management, Competitive
Argumentation, and Media and Broadcasting classes.
Some possible majors is a bachelors degree in journalism, with concentration to sports.
Other majors I can take is a Bachelors Degree in Sports Broadcasting & Multimedia. I currently
do not know any instate or out-of-state colleges that offer these majors, but I do know that
Syracuse and Oklahoma State have incredible Sports journalism/sports broadcasting majors.
I would possibly like to interview sports journalists/broadcasters from the Cranberry Eagle, Trib
Total Media, or maybe even The Post-Gazette.
The interview I conducted was with Ariel Helwani, an MMA Sports Journalist currently with
AOL. I learned that sports journalists have to do more than just write and publish articles. They
have to conduct interviews with players and put themselves out there to try to do these things
with players and officials. I am still interested in this job, but I will have to learn more about
interviewing and gain self-motivation to do this.
