Design several networks of steam heaters, coolers, and process-to-process heat exchangers,
using a ∆Tmin of 10°C. It is preferable to use process-to-process heat exchangers in preference
to utility heaters and coolers (but you may incur a consequence of doing so – what is it?)
Which is the best design?
Express your answers using diagrams and tables as follows, using circles to indicate process-
to-process heat exchangers, and adding H and C to indicate usage of Hot utility (steam) or
Cold utility (cooling water), respectively. Indicate the amount of heat transfer occurring
within a given heat exchanger, and calculate the exit temperatures of the streams from each
heat exchanger. What is the largest amount of heating by steam and heat rejected to cooling
water that could possibly be needed (i.e. using no process-to-process heat transfer)? What are
the minimum amounts? How many heat exchangers are needed in each case?
