New Features

This section describes the new features in the Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain
family of products. Products that are not specifically listed indicate there
were no major feature changes to these products included in this release.

Aspen PIMS
The following enhancements and improvements are included in the V10
release of PIMS:
 Aspen PIMS Platinum has been subsumed into Aspen Unified PIMS and
can no longer be accessed directly from PIMS
 PIMS EE has been sunset.
 New MIP Setting
The Enable MIP Warm Start setting has been added on to the MIP
options tab of the Xpress L.P. Model Settings dialog box. This setting
helps to improve efficiency (speed) of MIP runs, especially for large MIP
models by warm-starting the first MIP iteration from the state of the MIP
variables in the input solution.
 New TRANCOL options
o V10 now allows generation of TRANCOL reports for PIMS-AO
executions. These reports can be viewed using the new AO Marginal
Analysis Viewer which allows you to perform what-if scenarios by
seeing results when swapping independent and dependent variables.
o The Create XLPTC File option has been added that allows you to
generate a TRANCOL file without writing to the database, thus saving
valuable storage space.
 Assay Table Spreadsheet
The ASSAYS input spreadsheet has been added to the Model Tree
Tables tab. You can perform standard spreadsheet operations on the
ASSAYS spreadsheet from the Navigation tree as well as through the
Assay Management system.
 New Automation Method
The automation method RunParametricAnalysis has been added that
allows you to run Parametric Analysis.

Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes 7

Aspen Assay Management
The following enhancements were added to Assay Management for the V10
release:
 Fractionation Model Enhancements
Allows calibration of SI factors from plant test-run data. This is the most
significant enhancement to Assay Management for V10. By enabling you
to calibrate the fractionation model SI factors, PIMS crude cutting data will
reflect the current state of plant operation, resulting in improved accuracy
of the planning model.
 PIMS Integration Enhancements
Increase application speed by eliminating redundant data transfers. This
saves significant time when working with PIMS models that include a large
number of crudes.
 Improved Ease of Importing Assay Data
An improved AspenTech formatted Excel File template simplifies assay
data importing. This template includes dropdown lists of available options
for country, properties, and units – shortening the time required to
prepare paper assays and eliminating manual entry errors.
 New Assay Reporting
Characterized assay results can now be exported to Excel in the form of a
typical assay report for the purpose of easly communicating assay data
across your organization.

Aspen Unified PIMS

Aspen Unified PIMS is a new product for V10. Features from aspenONE PIMS
Platinum have been subsumed in this product.

Aspen Olefins Scheduler

AOS has been sunset.

Aspen Petroleum Scheduler

The following V10 enhancements apply to APS only.
 aspenONE PIMS Platinum is sunset in V10 and therefore can no longer be
accessed from Petroleum Scheduler
 A new option, Crude Audit Basis, has been added to the Settings dialog
box. This option allows you to select from volume or weight. What is
selected is how quantities appear on the Audit Inventory dialog box. In
addition, a CONFIG keyword, CRD_AUDIT_BASIS, has been added to the
CONFIG table that also sets the Audit Inventory basis.
 A new CONFIG keyword, OXE_MAX_VALUE_LIMIT, has been added.
This keyword allows you to set a maximum value that will be processed

8 Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes

when using OXE. If a cell value is larger than this value, it will not be
processed.
 A new setting, Calculate Limits, has been added to the Material
Pools dialog box that allows the system to automatically calculate trend
limits for specific types of material pools.

Dock and Pipeline Scheduling Enhancements

 Addition of #AUTO section on new Voyages worksheet to invoke user
defined functionality from the Voyages dialog box.

UserCalc Modifications
 Now supported for Dock Scheduling Crude Receipt, Non-crd
Rcpt (PRODRCPT) and Product Shipment events. Pipeline
Scheduling events regarding receipts and shipment also support
UserCalc.
 Route input section has been added
on CRDRCPT, PRODRCPT and PLSHIP UNITS worksheets to handle route
input, displacement segment , displacement tanks and forward rate input.

Changes to Existing Functionality

 If the PUB_BIAS_RESULTS keyword is set to 'Y' in the CONFIG table,
period bias results are published to the _ZBIASRESULTS table. Previously
bias results were published to the _BIASRESULTS table.
 The Crude Basis option on the Settings dialog box has been changed
to Crude Assay Basis to clarify that the option specifically affects the
basis associated with Crude Assays.

Aspen Refinery Multi-Blend

Optimizer
The following V10 enhancements apply to MBO only.
 A new setting, Calculate Limits, has been added to the Material
Pools dialog box that allows the system to automatically calculate trend
limits for specific types of material pools.

Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes 9

Aspen Blend Controller
Interface
The following V10 enhancement applies to BCI:
The following Controller Types are no longer supported and therefore will no
longer appear in the Bend Controller Type dropdown list:
 Pro-Blend-T
 Pro-Blend
 Blend-QC-Y
 Aspen Blend PIMS
These formats are associated with the old .pim model file which is no longer
used.

Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain

Planner
The following V10 enhancements apply to PSCP:
Mapping technology is significantly improved in this release. New mapping, in
the form of Leaflet files, allows for easier results analysis. A summary of
these enhancements follows.
 Leaflet maps allow for easier zooming, mouse panning, node selection,
keyboard panning and box-zooming; use these features as you would any
browser application without having to access Edit menu commands.
 New map layers from ESRI online base maps.
Map improvements that apply to all map types visible on the Results window
include:
 Numbers appear on the segment and transport lines
o For transport lines costs or activities are displayed based on the
new View menu option Show Cost (Transport Only).
o For segment lines, total used capacity for the associated segments is
displayed.
o Time-weighted-averages for ratable data over multiple periods can
be displayed.
o Activity number is a time-weighted-average or a sum of activities
depending on report data basis.
o Cost number is always a sum of total costs.
 Clicking on a node highlights associated values in green in the details
pane below the map. The Summation area updates to show the sum of
the associated row entries.
 For case comparison results, visible numbers for segment and transport
activities display the difference between the two cases.

10 Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes

 For maps with period data
o For each period, the number associated with the line is sum of
activities/costs of the associated segments or transports
o For all periods, if report is on total basis, the number is a sum of
activities/costs for selected periods
o For all periods, if the report is on a ratable basis, the number is a time
weighted average of activities associated with the line for all
selected periods
The following options and enhancements have been added to the Results
Window View menu and toolbar:
Icon View Menu Description
Option

Show Number
with Arrow Displays numbers with Transport and Segment
lines.
 For transport lines costs are displayed
 For segment lines, total used capacity
for the associated segments is displayed.
Show Cost Shows the cost associated with the transport arc.
(Transport Option is disabled if Show Number with
Only) Arrow is not selected.
Show Total Shows total cost as well as activity total for
Cost activities; if not selected, does not show cost
totals; cost totals are always on a total basis
and can be in the form of total spending or total
revenue depending on the active view (e.g, which
tab is selected). Total costs appear in
the Summation toolbar area.
Show Empty Show all nodes even if they are empty and
Unlinked unlinked. If not selected, empty and unlinked
nodes are hidden.
Find All Shows all connections from a selected node to a
Connections destination, including all intermediaries; the full
path for a particular node are shown. If this option
is not selected, only the direct links to/from a
selected node are visible.
Highlight Available only when comparing cases. Show only
Material with materials where values are different, in other
Differences words where non-zero changes occur.
Aggregate Available only when comparing cases. Display
Real Numbers numbers as real values, not absolute values, thus
displaying the actual change in total volume; if
option not selected, values appear as absolute
numbers.

Additional toolbar enhancement

 Filters allow you to perform type ahead search input and also multi-
selection within all dropdown filters.
 Filters now support range selection. You can check/uncheck an item and
then hold down Shift to select additional items in a range.

Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes 11

Changed map behavior
 Clicking on a node highlights all associated row entries in the results
window; there is no need to select All Nodes to update the summation
window.

 To improve visual usability, you can show either segments or

transport arcs or neither on a map. You cannot display both at the
same time.
New Map related settings
 You can now customize map font and number formatting from
the Program Options Map tab.
 A tolerance level can be set when displaying a case comparison map that
is separate from the number of decimal places. The Zero
Tolerance option has been added to the Select Solution Cases dialog
that allows you to set a zero tolerance value. Values that are less than or
equal to the entered value will be treated as zero.

Additional Enhancements for V10:

 New Automation Method
GetOutputDatabaseFilePath() has been added that returns the full path to
the current results database.
 New setting to display simplified tooltips
The Don't use custom tooltips option has been added to
the Workaround tab on the Program Options dialog box to help solve
an issue where tooltips may not display consistently.
 Matrix Browser
Significant improvements have been made to matrix loading speed.

20 Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes

Known Issues

This section covers known issues associated with the Petroleum Supply Chain
V10 release. Issues are organized by product.

Aspen PIMS
Advanced Optimization Perform Option
Clarification
For Perform options associated with AO functions, only execution results
associated with the currently requested function is displayed. All other AO
execution results are not included. To see all results, use the View option.

Aspen Unified PIMS

Installation on a Non-Domain Environment
If the system on which Unified PIMS is installed is a workgroup environment
(non-domain), you will not be able to browse for domain users to assign roles
associated with the site, models and assay libraries to others.

Submodel Unit Simulations

Issue: When a submodel starts with a large number of degrees of freedom
(the difference between number of variables and number of equations) the
algorithm used to square the submodel may fail to complete before the
system times out. As a result, the simulation may fail to open.
Resolution: Reduce the number of degrees of freedom by decreasing the
number of variables.

Running Large Number of Cases (>1000) Fails

Issue: Running a large number of cases may fail to execute properly.
Resolution: The ability to run a large number of cases is highly dependent
on hardware limitations as well as customizing AUP software settings. Please
contact AspenTech Support and reference Knowledge Base Article Number

Settings” for best practices when running a large number of cases.

AUP Assay Management – Use of Custom Tags for

Pure Components
Issue: If you create pure components with custom tags, the system may not
be able to associate those tags with known pure components. In this case,
the system will assign default IBP to FBP values. Erroneous or unanticipated
results may consequently appear due to invalid calculations.
Resolution: AUP assay management can distinguish several pure
components tags such as NC1, NC3, NC4 and IC4 and assign appropriate IBP
to FBP values. Use these known tags to ensure IBP and FBP values are
correctly used.

Custom Splitter Towers Display Incorrectly

Issue: Custom splitter towers with multiple feeds do not display correctly in
a distillation mode.
Resolution: Custom Splitter towers can only have a single feed per mode. If
multiple feeds are present, they will not be displayed correctly. Redefine the
splitter tower so there is only a single feed.

Aspen Assay Management

Selection of Incorrect Temperature Units May
Cause Invalid Results or Crash
CQ00763558
Issue: When using the Setup Wizard to transfer PIMS Assay Table data to
Aspen Assay Management, you must ensure that the correct temperature unit
is selected for each product (cut) on the Define Cut Points step. If an
incorrect temperature unit is selected, the assay data will be transferred
based on an incorrect unit. The data and characterization results will be
incorrect and meaningless. Under certain conditions, such as there are more
than 3 products (cuts) under 36 C., errors may occur during characterization
and the results will not be suitable for use in generating cutting results for
PIMS. Selection of incorrect units when used in conjunction with Distillation-
based separation method, may cause a crash to occur.
Resolution: Select the correct temperature unit for each product (cut)
during setup.

Aspen Petroleum Scheduler
(APS) and Aspen Refinery
Multi-Blend Optimizer (MBO)
Access Models
There is a known compatibility issue when running Office 365 on Windows 10
or Windows 8.1 and using Access databases. Without performing the
following, you will not be able to open your databases.

Note: The steps below will work for both 32 or 64 bit versions of Office 365.
If running the 64 bit version of Office 365, another option is to create a DSN
for each database and skip the steps below.
Please follow the steps below:
1 Download the Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Re-
distributable from the following location:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=13255
Click Download and select AccessDatabaseEngine.exe.
2 Click Next to start the download process. The executable can be found in
your Downloads folder.
3 Once downloaded, install AccessDatabaseEngine.exe by right-clicking
and selecting “Run as Administrator”. Follow the instructions. You can
also run the installation by double-clicking on the file.
The installation installs an associated driver that you can see under
Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.
Example: Microsoft Access database engine 2010
After completing the steps above, you will be able to open .mdb databases
through the application.

Use of USE_LOG_UTC flag and Concurrent Users

When the USE_LOG_UTC flag is set and two users are working on the same
APS/MBO model at the same time, modified the same event, the conflict
dialog is shown even if the user accepted the changes from the other user.

Aspen Petroleum Scheduler

User without access rights can modify control
variable list on an event screen
CQ0075659
CQ00717047

Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes 23

Issue: User rights have changed starting with V8.8. APS now allows ALL
users to perform “What-If” scenarios irrespective of user rights when making
changes to an event screen. Changes however cannot be saved to the
database unless the user has the appropriate rights. The following message
displays when attempting to save, “x number of events will not be saved…”.
Resolution: If you wish to save changes on an event screen, be sure you
have the appropriate user rights.

Aspen EIU – Importing volume based inventory in

the weight based model
CQ00715769
CQ00696328
Issue: EIU does not allow importing of volume based Crude inventory into a
weight based model
Resolution: Convert crude inventory to weight based when using EIU

Build Ref tab on Submodel Dialog – Display issues

CQ00722995
The grid column sizes are not persisted when resized and must be resized
each time you return to the dialog.

Pipeline Dialogs – Missing post and prep times

CQ00752677
Post and Prep time fields are missing on a Pipeline Crude Receipt and
Pipeline Product Injection dialogs.

Pipeline Scheduling – Line fill data not saved if

baseline is changed to earlier time
CQ00762109
If a line fill date is set and then the baseline date or model start date is
changed prior to that date, APS does not save or ask the user if they wish to
save.

Pipeline Scheduling – Weight based pipeline

movements
CQ00715764
CQ00702887
CQ00726204
Issue: APS has limited functionality to handle weight based pipeline
movements. Therefore, there may be performance issues.
Resolution: Convert pipeline events to volume based events.

24 Aspen Petroleum Supply Chain V10 Release Notes

Pipeline Scheduling – Automation
APS does not allow accessing of the following pipeline event types via
automation:
 Pipeline Product Injection
 Pipeline Out of Service
 Pipeline Fill Destination change

Pipeline Scheduling – Excel Integration and Edit

in Excel
APS does not allow accessing any pipeline event types via Excel Integration
Utilities or Edit in Excel.

Do not Use Copy and Paste to Create a New

Pipeline Out-of-Service Event
Issue: Copying and pasting an out-of-service event to create a new event of
this type is not supported. Using cut and paste will cause the system to
crash. This type of event affects numerous other associations that cannot be
simply duplicated.
Resolution: Create a new Out-Of-Service event in the usual way by going
to Events | Add Event | Pipeline Out-of-Service.

Oracle Model Issue

Issue: Oracle models will not work correctly with a lowercase username for
database connection. Behavior is not consistent and crashes may occur.
Resolution: Change the username to upper case for database connection.

Crash Occurs When Trying to Simulate using

Oracle 12
Issue: Inability to simulate when using Oracle 12.
Resolution: A necessary component has been deprecated with Oracle 12.
Oracle Client 11g contains the required component. You will therefore need
to do the following:
1. Download the Oracle Client 11g installation.
2. Start the installer and select Custom as the installation type then click
Next.
3. Skip the software updates and click Next.
4. On the Available Product Components page, select Oracle Objects
for OLE.
5. Complete the installation for the component.

PSCP may crash when closing Map Window

Issue: PSC may crash when attempting to close in the following situation:
If changes are made to the map in the Results Window and you attempt to
close PSCP and do not first see the confirmation dialog on saving changes to
the Results Window, the system may crash.
Resolution: After initiating a close command, you must confirm whether or
not to save changes from the Results Window. If you do not see a
confirmation dialog, toggle windows control until the dialog appears.
