Dear Hate

Dear Hate by Maren Morris embodies the tragedies in the world and uses many forms

figurative language.

My song Dear Hate is by Maren Morris featuring Vince Gill. Maren Morris is one of my

favorite American country music singer/ songwriter. She was born in Arlington TX and has won

4 awards including CMA New Artist of the Year. Vince Gill is another American country music

singer. He was born in Norman OK and has been honored by the CMA with 18 CMA Awards as

well as 21 Grammy Awards. I like this song for one reason alone and that is the message it is

delivering. Now I listen to a lot of country music that is joyful but also tragic and compared to

the rest of them this song combines both joy and tragedy. I do admire Maren Morris because

unlike most country artists she is strong in her faith. Some of her other songs I like are My

Church, 80’s Mercedes, and I Could Use a Love Song.

When Maren Morris wrote Dear Hate it was right after the Las Vegas shooting and she

felt inspired to tell the world about the evil in the world. In the song Maren Morris sings “You

were there in the garden, like a snake in the grass” which is referring to the story of Adam and

Eve. However she then sings “But I hate to tell you, love’s gonna conquer all” which is saying

that even though evil destroys everything love will come first no matter what happens.

Some literary devices found in Dear Hate are simile, imagery, and personification. The

first simile is “I saw you on the news today; Like a shock that takes my breath away” This lyric

is a simile because it is using the term like to compare seeing evil on the news to a shock. The

second simile is “You were there in the garden, like a snake in the grass” This simile is also

using the term like to compare hate to the snake in the grass in the story of Adam and Eve.

Another literary device seen in the song is imagery, “Dear Hate; Well, you sure are colorblind”

This is helping paint a picture in our mind of what hate looks like. The final piece of imagery

used in Dear Hate is personification, “Dear Hate; You were smiling from that Selma bridge”

This lyric is personification because it is giving hate human actions like smiling which hate can

not do.

To conclude when Maren Morris wrote Dear Hate she wanted to show what hate may do

to us but how love will always win. She not only showed this through examples of tragedies but

also threw forms of figurative language.
