Strategic Planning: The Chamber’s restructure is now
complete. In the first quarter of 2018, the Chamber’s
leadership team will craft a three-year operational plan
designed and focused on bringing even more value to our
membership.

last year has been spent reinvigorating important
relationships with individuals, member businesses and
local and regional government. We will continue to work

2017 PAST PRESIDENT - LAUREN KOLB
A wise man once said: “It is wonderful what
great strides can be made when there is a
resolute purpose behind them” (Winston
Churchill)
Wonderful indeed — what a year! Great strides
WERE made and yes — unwavering purpose
drove it all. Decisions, frank decisions, tough
decisions were made with ingredients that
superseded any one mindset. We had a stellar
group of “cooks in the kitchen” this year —
the 2017 Board of Directors. This board; made
up by some of the most successful thought
leaders and business people in our community, were present, engaged,
and enthusiastic to serve. Together, we prudently navigated a year that
was new and different, ripe with pitfalls and possibilities. The Executive
Committee — those individuals serving as officers of the Board, proved
that our mission — fiscal responsibility and superior membership value
— was not only achieved, but has positioned the Chamber to prosper in
ways that are innovative and exciting for the upcoming year.
So, how did we do? In 2017, I shared a theme that promised
communication and collaboration throughout our community. That was
my hope as we embarked upon a challenging year with new executive
leadership, a restructuring of staff responsibilities and operational
efficiencies, and a committee overhaul, all conducted within a culture
of compliance and transparency relative to the goals and objectives of
the Chamber.
What was done? Executive Leadership. I’m pleased to report our search
proved to be very successful. Our new “Executive Chef ”, Ethan Fogg,
was the right choice for our new direction! With just the right dose of
intellect, coupled with unbridled enthusiasm, Ethan has created a recipe
for success that has helped reshape and renew our “menu of offerings” at
the Chamber.
Staff. With the ever-so-successful, Elisha Everson at the helm of our
events and sponsorship initiatives for the past 14 years, we found ourselves
in the position to redesign staff responsibilities for the membership and
communication pillars of our organization. Chris Cole is that success
story. With our volunteer program in full swing — Chris presented the
chamber with an opportunity to take advantage of his volunteer talents
and transcend his skill sets into a full time employment position that
mixed well and folded in nicely to the new trajectory of the Chamber.
Elisha and Chris continue to wear many hats and accomplish great things
together on a daily basis, and for that we are truly grateful.
Committee Overhaul. “Excellence is the gradual result of always striving
to do better” (Pat Riley). This past year, we did something that was
desperately needed, completely unexpected, and wildly accepted by the
Chosen Spot community — we reinstated the Canandaigua Chamber of
Commerce Tourism Committee! Special thanks go out to Sandy Sloane
(Solutions by Sloan), our 2017 Interim Director and Facilitator, whose
chutzpa and inexhaustible spirit spearheaded this effort for the good of
our community. In 2017, the word TOURISM took on new meaning.
By communicating needs, desires, goals, and objectives, the Chamber
rallied nearly 60 people to embark upon an initiative that hadn’t been
in place for over five years! With that, we created three sub-committees
which supported, likes legs of a stool, marketing, events, and educational
aspects of what the tourism committee set-out to achieve. I’m proud to
report that like ducks to water, members of the chamber and community
at-large gravitated to the idea of coming together for a common cause
and good work was done by all.
Constituencies Came Together For The Common Good. The City of
Canandaigua, the Canandaigua Business Improvement District (CBID),
the Canandaigua Merchants Association (CDMA), and the Finger
Lakes Tourism Alliance (FLTA) all found ways to work better together.
The end result? The breaking down of silos which in the past inhibited
progress to our community; increased communication which allowed for
thoughtful discussions to be had; new funding opportunities which have
dramatically increased membership value; and last but not least, solid
community relations that ultimately will last a lifetime.
Culture of Compliance and Transparency. If that wasn’t enough, we
publically solicited our membership to identify industries that had not
previously been represented on our Board. Through this exercise, we
listened to and heard from members who felt there needed to be “a voice”
for the public sector and the nonprofit sector on the Board. Therefore, we
have created two new committees to fulfil such purpose.
Now what? As I end my “shift” as President of the Board, and assume
my new responsibilities as Past President, I ask you to kindly support our
incoming President, Mr. Andy Griffith. Andy is surefooted and ready for
the job! He will undoubtedly keep the Board on track with his sure fire
wit and love for Canandaigua. Make no mistake about it, there is a new
sheriff in town!
Thank you! Above all, thank you. Thank you for your membership, your
sponsorships, and your support. Thank you for being the community
that embraced me a long time ago, and the community I call home.
Thank you for your time, your talent, your treasure, but most of all —
thank you for your friendship. This is YOUR Chamber, a 108 year old
organization that stands tall, proud and will continue working for you
each and every day.

107th Annual Dinner

The Chamber’s 107th Annual Dinner and Member-
ship Meeting was held on Friday, February 3rd at
Finger Lakes Community College. The Chamber
was pleased to host more than 250 guests on this
evening in which the Mr./Mrs./Ms. Canandaigua
Award was presented to Byron Delavan.

Chamber Mixers
We host mixers eleven months a year, drawing traffic
and attention to member businesses (the host, their
caterer and often other entertainment) and bringing
people from all segments of our economy together
to share a drink, a snack and an evening of laughter

The 2017-2018 Community Guide is a high-quality,
magazine-style product that offers large photos,

about the community and how to get involved in
the Chamber.

2017 Anniversary Gala

The Chamber’s 12th annual Anniversary Gala
was held at The Inn on the Lake on August 23rd.
Nearly 200 guests helped honor long-time members MIXER
including 65-year member, Kiwanis Club of
Canandaigua, 55-year members Finger Lakes Gaming
& Racetrack, Muehe & Newton, LLP, and UR
Medicine Thompson Health; 50-year members,
Ryan’s Wine & Spirits and 45-year members
Fisher-Yates Communications, Inc., Sonnenberg
Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park, among
others. Keynote, Matt Hurlbutt, from Greater
Rochester Enterprise, updated guests on regional
economic development activities.

Canandaigua Visitor’s Guide and Map

The Chamber distributed 25,000 copies of the 2017-
2018 Visitor’s Guide and Map through our visitor’s
center, local businesses, brochure exchanges, parks
and area chambers, as well as fulfilling any requests
by mail. The Visitor’s Guide and Map coordinates
with the Chamber’s Canandaigua Community Guide
and was enhanced with a more eye-catching map
of the area.

Ribbon Cuttings
The Chamber offers no-cost ribbon cuttings to new
member businesses or to members who undergo ANNIVERSARY GALA
renovations or open new locations. It’s a great way
to celebrate your business’ success and gain visibility
in your area as well as across the entire Chamber
membership. Staff are happy to share best practices
and spread the word about new and expanding
businesses in the area!

Chamber University
As the name implies, Chamber University is our
member education program. Leveraging the talent
and insights of member businesses, we host local,
low-cost classes on topics and skills from Networking
and Storytelling to QuickBooks and Legal
Compliance. Chamber U is a great way to build
your skills, or those of your staff, while controlling
your expenses and building your network.

Business Awards Luncheon

The Chamber held its 6th annual Business Awards
Luncheon at the Canandaigua Country Club on
Friday, June 2nd. Wood Library was recognized for
Excellence in Service; Canandaigua Federal Credit
Union for Excellence in Retail; JD Chapman
Agency, Inc. for Excellence in Industry, and Finger
Lakes Visitors Connection was recognized for
Excellence in Tourism. Keynote speaker, Penelope
Pankow, shared the story of developing her business,
F. Oliver’s Oils and Vinegars.

Breakfast & Business

Long known for putting members in touch with BUSINESS AWARDS
current events, the Chamber used the Breakfast &
Business platform to deliver a Legislative luncheon
in March, and State of the City, County and Town
in May, both at The Inn on the Lake and FLCC
Strategic Planning with Dr. Rob Nye, on the campus
of Finger Lakes Community College in November.

The 33rd annual ATHENA Leadership Awards
Dinner was held on Friday, November 17th at
Finger Lakes Community College. Canandaigua
ATHENA Leadership Awards are co-hosted by
the Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce and the
Professional Women of the Finger Lakes.

Over 350 guests recognized nominees and recipients
of this year’s ATHENA Young Professional Leadership
Awards and the prestigious ATHENA Leadership
Award. Terrie L. Meyn was this year’s ATHENA
recipient and Sayeh Rivazfar was this year’s ATHENA

Light Up Canandaigua!
Volunteer Investment
This year’s Light Up Canandaigua provided for a
