The fixing bracket is positioned on top of the existing vehicle Susie distribution bracket using the
holes originally used for the vehicle 15 pin trailer output socket and the suzie park socket. With the
fixing bracket in place refit the 15 pin trailer output socket into the same location from which it
had earlier been removed and secure using 2off M8 nuts provided. Reconnect the yellow
pneumatic trailer connection and ensure there are no air leaks then reposition the loading lamp
onto the fixing bracket and connect using the loading lamp extension cable supplied, also
reposition the suzie park socket onto the fixing bracket as shown in the photo above and secure
using 20ff M8x25mm bolts and 20ff M8 nuts supplied.

pin trailer output socket: 80Nm
M8 nuts and bolts used to secure the suzie park socket: 50Nm
M8 nuts and bolts used to secure the ETI to the fixing bracket: 90Nm
The cables should now be neatly secured with care taken to avoid any chaffing, possible
water ingress into the ETI and entanglement with suzie cables. The power cable from the
ETI should be routed to follow the vehicle original suzie cable wiring between the frame
and the air cleaner, underneath the chassis and into the inside of the side-member it should
be secured using the cable ties provided again taking care to ensure no chaffing can occur.

40A Circuit Breaker Installation – TGC Connection

To make the connection to the vehicles TGC it will be necessary to remove the first vehicle battery
to gain access to two nuts and bolts holding the TGC mounting bracket. Once the battery has been
removed also remove the two nuts and bolts securing the TGC mounting bracket and then unbolt
the TGC from its mounting bracket.

Battery positive connection on TGC

Switched connection on TGC

Turn the TGC over to gain access to the cable connections. Remove the cover off the switched side
of the TGC and connect the ETI positive cable to the stud using the M12 nut and M12 spring
washer provided, refit the TGC cover and secure any excess length in the cable ensuring that no
chaffing can occur. The TGC can now be fastened back onto its mounting bracket, the mounting
bracket can now be secured to the battery carrier and the battery can now be reinstalled onto the
vehicle.
NOTE:
It is imperative that the ETI is connected to the switched side of the TGC and not directly to the
battery positive.

ETI Activation
The ETI will be supplied with the 40A circuit breaker in the ‘OFF’ position (open circuit)
and after the installation is complete the ETI will require activation by switching the circuit
breaker to the ‘ON’ position (short circuit).

Installation Tests
It is recommended that the following checks are made once the ETI is installed.
If the trailer has had any load simulation or reduction devices fitted to any of the lighting
circuits it is possible that the ETI will not detect bulb failure or overload, therefore for the
ETI to function correctly these devices must be removed.

User Manual – Electronic Trailer Interface (ETI) Functionality
The ETI has been specifically designed to allow Trailer Manufacturers/Customers to
utilise both Incandesant and LED lamp clusters for rear illumination on trailers. The
technology utilised within the ETI allows all rear lighting circuits to be continuously
monitored through the 15 pin ISO 12098 suzie connector when a trailer has been
detected regardless of the type of rear lamp clusters fitted. In addition to the trailer
lighting functionality the ETI also monitors any electrical load powered via pin 9 or
utilising the common returns on pins 4 or 13 of the 15 pin ISO 12098 suzie connector.

Trailer Lighting

The ETI has been developed to work in conjunction with the Rear Frame Computer
and is located in the vehicle wiring between the Rear Frame Computer and the trailer.
It provides information to the Rear Frame Computer regarding the status of the rear
lighting circuits through a series of simulation signals, this enables the relevant
warning messages to be displayed via the dashboard Instrument Cluster should any
lighting circuit encounter an overload or short circuit. The ETI will also provide
information to the Rear Frame Computer regarding bulb failure on the stop or
indicator circuits, this also enables the relevant messages to be displayed via the
Instrument Cluster should the stop or either of the indicator circuits fail to illuminate,
thus maintaining all vehicle functionality with regard to rear lights.

Trailer Light Warning Messages

The trailer light warning messages that are displayed to the driver are sent from the
ETI to the Rear Frame Computer and then on to the Instrument Cluster via the Can-
Line. The table below (Fig. 1) identifies the circuits and the faults relevant to those
circuits that are monitored by the ETI, the diagnostic codes can be found on the Rear
Frame Computer diagnostic screen within the Instrument Cluster.

Trailer Detect System

The ETI will detect the presence of a trailer on the indicators circuits and the stop
light circuit it also uses two different methods of detection. If the indicator or stop
circuits are not activated then it will detect a residual current path to ground that has
an equivalent resistance of less than 10MΩ, if the either of the indicator or stop light
circuits are activated then it will detect a current flow in excess of approximately
5mA. The table below (Fig.2) shows the relevant circuits and thresholds for trailer
detection.

Bulb Failure Warning System

When the stop or indicator lights are activated the ETI will continuously monitor its
outputs for when the relevant circuit fails or ceases to illuminate. If these circuits are
functioning correctly and the current in the circuits is above approximately 5mA the
ETI presents a simulation signal to the Rear Frame Computer, through a series of
resistors, when these circuits fail or the current falls below approximately 5mA the
simulation signal is removed and the Rear Frame Computer sends the relevant
warning message to the Instrument Cluster. The table below (Fig.3) shows the
relevant circuits and thresholds for bulb failure warning.

Overload/Short Circuit Warning System

The ETI has protection against overload and short circuit on all trailer lighting
circuits, the maximum permissible current for each individual circuit is shown below
in Fig. 4. If a circuit exceeds the maximum permissible current then the ETI will
switch off its output and a controlled overload simulation signal is presented to the
Rear Frame Computer, the Rear Frame Computer will then send a message via the
Can-Line to the Instrument Cluster.

ETI Diagnosis
The following pages contain a diagnostic guide which has been designed to assist in
correctly diagnosing a fault relating to a problem with trailer lighting when there is an
anomaly between the actual fault and the warning displayed on the Instrument
Cluster, the guide does not include any information relating to a fault that is reported
correctly on the Instrument Cluster. If a fault (shown in Fig.1 above) occurs on the
trailer and the fault is correctly reported on the Instrument Cluster then it is assumed
that any obvious checks have been made, for a warning relating to bulb failure these
checks would include:

• Check of the actual bulb(s) or LED lamp

• Check that there is 24V at pin 7 of the Stralis 15 pin trailer output socket
• Check for continuity of the trailer suzie lead
• Check for continuity of the trailer wiring
• Check of the earth connection for the trailer
• Visual check of all connections for corrosion

for a fault relating to an overload warning these checks would include:

• Check of the actual bulb(s) or LED lamp

• Check that no additional load has been connected to the circuit
• Check for short circuit on the suzie lead
• Check for short circuit on the trailer wiring

In addition to the above should the Instrument Cluster display a warning the
diagnostic guide also assumes that an ETI has been fitted and was functioning
correctly prior to the fault/problem occurring.
