Degree Of Comparison

DEFINITION Degree of Comparison


Comparison or comparative form is an adjective used to express the level of comparison. In English
use 3 forms of comparison, namely:

1. Positive Degree 2. Comparative Degree 3. Superlative Degree

EXAMPLE Degree of Comparison


1. Positive Degree
It is an adjective used to assert that an object or person is in the same state as the other. The
composition of this sentence is formed by placing adjectives between the two "as". Positive degree
consists of two types:
A) Positive Equivalent Comparison
Formula: Subject + to be + as + adjective + as + object

Example:
Bobby is as smart as his older brother. [Bobby as smart as his brother.]
Raisa is as beautiful as the moon. [Raisa is as beautiful as the moon.]
You are as old as Dhani's father. [You are as old as Dhani's father.]
Your smile is as sweet as mine. [Your smile is as sweet as my smile.]
He is as tall as his uncle. [He's as tall as his uncle.]
Nisa is as smart as Hana. [Nisa is as smart as Hana.]
You are as small as my sister. [You're as small as my sister.]

B) Negative Equivalent Comparison


Formula: Subject + to be + not + as / so + positive adjective + as + object
Example:
Chandra is not as smart as his older brother.
Chandra is not so smart as his older brother.
[Chandra is not as smart as his brother.]
Simon Santoso is not as strong as Lee Chong Wei.
Simon Santoso is not so strong as Lee Chong Wei.
[Simon Santoso is not as strong as Lee Chong Wei.]
Life is not as difficult as you think.
[Life is not as difficult as you think.]
Money is not so useful as knowledge.
[Money is not so useful as science.]
Barry is not so attractive as a singer.
[Barry is not that interesting as a singer.]
I am not as handsome as my father.
[I'm not as good as my dad.]

2. Comparative Degree
Used to compare two or more objects that are not equivalent. In other words, one thing has an
advantage over another.
Information :
Add a "er" suffix to the short adjectives (generally consisting of one or two syllables), combine with
the word "than". For longer adjectives (more than two syllables) are generally preceded by the
word "more" before the adjective, followed by the word "than".

Formula: Subject + to be + adjective + -er + than + objectSubject + to be + more + adjectives +

Example:
Lee Chong Wei is stronger than Simon Santoso.
[Lee Chong Wei is stronger than Simon Santoso.]
Mr. Salim is richer than Mr. Revelation.
[Mr. Salim is richer than Mr. Revelation.]
Your car is bigger than mine.
[Your car is bigger than my car.]
She can dive deeper than me.
[He can dive deeper than me.]
I am smarter than you.
[I'm smarter than you.]
My house is larger than Dodi's house.
[My house is wider than Dodi's house.]

Surya is more diligent than Ryan.

Raisa is more beautiful than the other female singers

No other drink is more nutrious than milk.

Magazine is more interesting than newspaper.

For some situations, the comparative degree does not use than. Because the two comparable
objects are not written in one sentence.
Example:
Wawan's car is not very big. He wants a bigger car.
[Wawan's car is not too big. He wants a bigger car.]

3. Superlative Degree (Most Levels)


Used to compare two or more objects, in which one of the most / ... objects of the other.
Information :
Add a "est" suffix to a short adjective sentence (usually one or two syllables). Preceded with the
"the" clothing.
For longer adjectives (more than two syllables) are generally preceded by the word "most" before
the adjective. Preceded with the word "the".
The adjectives ending in the -e letter are changed to superlative by adding the letter "-est".

The formula: to be + the superlative

Example:
Alex is the tallest boy among us.
[Sahrul is the highest among us.]
Mr. Susilo was the oldest man in the meeting.
[Mr Susilo is the oldest person in the meeting.]
Beverly Hills is the most luxurious cemetery in the world.
[Beverly Hills is the most luxurious tomb in the world.]
Cristiano Ronaldo is the most expensive football player in the world.
[Cristiano Ronaldo is the world's most expensive footballer.]
Milk is the most nutrious drink.
[Milk is the most nutritious beverage]
