Signal word
The signal word classifies the danger as defined in the following table:
DANGER DANGER identifies a dangerous situation, which will result directly in death or serious injury
if you do not avoid this situation.
WARNING WARNING identifies a dangerous situation, which may result in death or serious injury if
you do not avoid this situation.
CAUTION CAUTION identifies a dangerous situation, which could result in slight to moderately serious
injury if you do not avoid this situation.
NOTICE NOTICE identifies possible damage to property that may result from non-observance.

WARNING
Electrical voltage
Electric shock
Work on electrical installations may only be carried out by qualified
electricians or by instructed persons working under the guidance and
supervision of a qualified electrician, in accordance with the electrotechnical
regulations.
Wherever possible disconnect products from the power supply when carrying
out commissioning, maintenance or repair work on them.
Lock volt-free areas to prevent them being switched back on again by mistake.
Label the connection terminals with external external voltage using a
'DANGER External voltage' sign.
Route mains connections to products separately and fuse them with their own,
clearly marked fuse.

Protection concept
4
4 Protection concept
The aim of the protection concept for surge voltage and lightning is to take
appropriate measures to prevent damage to buildings and equipment.
Surge voltages are for example caused by the following events:
Switching operations in the power supply unit
Switching high inductive or capacitive loads
Electrostatic discharge
Lightning involving direct strikes in buildings, strikes on a long-distance line or
sheet lightning

Protective zones
5
5 Protective zones
The protective zones are areas nested inside one another. Surge voltages are
reduced at the transition between protective zones.
Appropriate reduction measures:
External lightning measures
Room shielding and building shielding using steel reinforcement
Device shielding using metal housings
Use of suitable components on the connections
Protection is provided from the outside working in using zones.
Zone 0, outside (also zones 0/A, 0/B, 0/C or 0/E)
Zone 1 within zone 0
Zone 2 within zone 1
Zone n within zones n-1
Position of zones and components:
Zone 0 is in the building shell area.
The fire detection installation is in zone 2.
The fire detection installation components may be in zone 2…n.
The same zones may be linked if the connection also corresponds to this zone.

Lightning protection
Measures counteracting the effects of lightning are considered lightning protection.
External lightning protection relates to components outside the building.
Internal lightning protection relates to components inside the building.

6 Protective measures
Protective devices which reduce the surge voltages are used for voltage surge
protection. These are split into primary, intermediate and fine protection. Combined
protective devices are possible.

Protection categories
8
8 Protection categories
The protection categories are defined according to the EN 62305 standard. A risk
assessment is undertaken to determine which protection requirements are to be
satisfied and in what time period tests should be undertaken.
Safe distance
A safe distance is defined for each protection category. This minimizes the risk of
the lightning protection system flashing over or feeding through to metal
installations or electric installations.
The safe distance needed is calculated using a formula which takes into account:
Protection category
Number of conductor lines
Material, building material
Length along conductor line or arrester device
Design of connected and reinforced walls, ceilings, facades, roofs
