1. Introduction
1.1. Introduction
A performance, in the performing arts, generally comprises an event in which a performer or
group of performers present one or more works of art to an audience. Performances can take
place at designated performance spaces (such as a theatre or concert hall), or in a non-
conventional space, such as a subway station, on the street, or in somebody's home.
Music performances (e.g. a concert or a recital) may take place indoors in a concert hall or
outdoors in a field, and may vary from requiring the audience to remain very quiet to encouraging
them to sing and dance along with the music.
The first theaters are formed in ancient Greece and Rome as well as the first incorporation of
choreography into plays by Euripides. This is incredibly significant because this was the very
beginning of performance art in the world that we know of and these were carried out in the
open spaces. In the east it consisted of many forms of dance and accoustic performance in China
and India. Whenever artists have become discontented with conventional forms of art, such as
painting and traditional modes of sculpture, they have often turned to performance as a means
to rejuvenate their work.
1.1.1. Multi-functional Space
A multi- functional outdoor space is an integral part of a Performing Art Centre(PAC). A multi-
functional space can be described as a true integration of different functions in time and space
(Brandt & Vejre, 2004). Multifunctional spaces are designed in order to satisfy different demands
at less area and these spaces can contribute to a place's vitality. Multi-functional amenities often
appeal to diverse community members, including activists, artists, academics and social
entrepreneurs, allowing them to act as incubators for new ideas, knowledge exchange, shared
experience and experimentation. This connection of diverse communities can inspire innovative
thinking and provide opportunities for collaboration and partnerships across traditional
boundaries. Multifunctional space can be used for theatre, musical performances as well as
various community programmes with robust amenities which ensures its usage at all times.
General Background
The centre would consist of indoor main studio space, education, administration, The main goal
of the project is to vibrantly open to the community with indoor and outdoor venues for
multipurpose performance activities. The project intent is to provide an architecture that triggers
various uses and accommodates multiple activities as a multipurpose square suitable for all age
and gender parameters. By locating some of the facilities outdoor the chances of direct contact
with the surrounding maximizes and provides interaction at the community scale as well as the
human scale. During the last decade, we have witnessed the proliferation of climate-responsive
structures, such as canopies or wind towers, in the outdoor public spaces. The main purpose of

such structures is to adapt these spaces to existing microclimatic conditions and promote
outdoor comfort. Staying outdoors in summer at midday can be too uncomfortable, due to which
people consider indoor spaces. This is due to high temperatures and intense solar radiation that
are intensified by the Urban Heat Island effect and climate change. Different design technologies,
materials and orientation aid on solving these problems.

2. Problem statement
Outdoor Performance space design consideration with respect to planning, material, climate and
technology for multifunctional use.

2.1. Research Problem

The main research problem is to study the planning of the multifunctional spaces so that it can
cater to different function. The spatial function of an outdoor space is very crucial to attract,
divert and contain the flow of people. It should be robust enough for different activities. The use
of materials and technology also plays a vital role in making these spaces robust. These materials
and technology can be used further to solve climatic problems (rain, sun). The study of planning
revolves around the circulation, types of activities provided, landscapes, permanent or
temporary coverings etc.
As the main focus of this research is on the outdoor space, the climatic characteristics should be
considered as well. The manupulation of outdoor spaces should be done in such a way that
people can enjoy outside in the sun, rain or cold. The physical properties of a outdoor space,
such as materiality, temperature, or light, can enhance or inhibit people from using and enjoying
it at all times. Climate-responsive design must consider aspects such as social activities,
accessibility, preconceptions of the space, and visual delight.
The outdoor performance space can support various performances such as theatre, musical
performance , dance etc. It can also be feasible as an exhibition space, ocassional markets, book
signings, social interacton space etc. For the year round usage it should be able to transform as
an recreational space where there are activities for different season, festivals, age groups etc. It
should be able to attract the larger crowd which may or maynot share the same taste and
preference.
The main research problem is as follows:
- Planning of an outdoor performance space
- Materials and technology used
- Climate Responsive Outdoor structures

3. Research Objective
3.1.1. Main Objectives
To study the planning of a Multi-functional space for outdoor performance. The design would
consider spaces for performing arts, and other form of arts such as live arts, sculpture etc. It can
act as an exhibition space, social interaction space as well. The other thing to consider would be
the climate responsive outdoor structures.

3.1.2. Sub Objectives

- To study planning of an outdoor multifunctional space.
- To study the materials and technology used for feasible and robust design.
- To study the various components that can be incorporated in the outdoor spaces.

3.2. Research Questions

- To study planning of an outdoor perdormance space.

i. How the spatial function of the outdoor space is allocated in relation to the building?
ii. What orientation and planning forms are incorporated so that it can cater to
different needs?
iii. How the stages are used in relation to the site and audience?

- To study the materials and technology used for feasible and robust design.

i. What are the new materials and technologies used for feasible designs?
ii. How can these technologies and materials be used to withstand climatic conditions?

- To study the various components that can be incorporated in the outdoor spaces.

i. What are the different activities that can be adapted outdoors?

ii. What are the common activities that support same space?

4. Conceptual Framework

4.1. Methodology
To study in detail the plannings involved in Outdoor Performance Space as a multifunctional
space and analyze the various spatial functions, material and technology given in requirements
through appropriate means of Literature study, Case studies and online research. This study shall
be done in reference with the major and minor objectives so as to achieve an integrated design
at the end.
