last year i was asked about a match which happened just a night before the
interview and fortunately due to my hardcore following of cricinfo i managed to
answer that
basically they can ask anything but technical terms like questions on fielding
questions are rare but ofcourse if that fielding position is in news than chances
are that they might ask it
example-short leg or some other close in fielders like face as certain issues of
physical threat is associated with it
but normally question ranges from issues associated with it such as betting
fixing , drs , dukworth lewis rule ,
or burning issues like chucking , hotspot , sledging and sendoffs
in past some have been asked about recent matches too like i was ofcourse and also
to someone from forumias only was asked about t20 wc final why yuvi failed? was it
the right decision to send him up? etc..
other imp terms-googly , backfoot no ball , sliders , doosra , carrom ball ,
knuckle ball etc..
all depends upon the mood of the interviewer what he/she wants to ask but rest
assured it won't create much problem ofcourse if someone seldom watches or play it
but have mentioned it as hobby as those who play it or watch it also have the habit
to discuss and analyze a lot about it some toh even eat and breath cricket
so it won't be a big problem but a healthy preparation is never a bad thing is it?
upsc is a like a sticky wet we need to be sure about our footwork(in this case our
WORD-WORK) and need to choose our shots carefully :)>- :)

Some questions I can think of:

1) What do you think of the IPL. Do you think it facilitates corruption in the
game? Will too much IPL drive youngsters away from the longer format of the game?
IPL has been introduced to bring out the young talents and also commercialize it by
including some big players who according to me should be in mentors(thou playing in
XI) in grooming these young talented players... But the commercialization has
reached to such a stae that without big names on board, there are no viewers and
sponsors for the teams. Corruption has been a front runner in such leagues and it
doesnt only belong to IPL... IPL is the cause that we have few Ranji level players
coming into the Indian squad, but they aren't able to take pressure and are falling
prey to bookies (few players).

2) How can we improve our performance abroad?

Our performance has been good but we fail in consistency and practice(according to
my knowledge). We rely a lot on few players... To this date we do not have the best
all rounders(we just have good players who perform well in all areas-that doesnt
mean he is allrounder professionally). India has lost best swing bowler Irfan
pathan with John Wright trying to improve his skills in batting which took him a
toll in bowling. Agarkar was the best all rounder for ranjies in india but he wasnt
groomed well at intl.level

3) What are the various types of balls used in International cricket?

Kokkaburra as I know... (may be few more too)
4) Name some famous cricket gear manufacturers in India and abroad.
No idea
5) Sachin v Bradman.
I feel comparision between these two is proper. They both have their styles and
numbers to prove.

6) Who is the current Ranji champion? How long is a typical Ranji game?
Karnataka.
7) Is Sreeni owning an IPL team a clear case of conflict of interest?
Yes. He is merely usng his power and political affiliations and continuing. I feel
the courts should have responded much earlier to keep the game clean of politics
and self interests.. I wonder how this man has all such baggage with him - India
cements, TNCA chairman, BCCI chairman, CSK Owner, ICC Chairman....salary kitna hoga
iska :-O :O

8) Pros and cons of DRS. Why is the BCCI opposed to it?

Drs was brought in to clear the air between wron decisions by the field empires.
But there were many decisions which went wrong under the drs scanner too...
Unfortunately many of these happened to Indian matches and some for them were
crucial ones

9) Have you heard of the Bombay Quadrangular? When did India play its first Test
match.
Never heard of such name. I do not remember exactly when it played but I am sure it
was with england
10) What is the length of a cricket pitch?
22yards between the wickets

Frankly there could be a hundred questions on Cricket.

I have answered them upon what my take is... If there is anything wrong or
uncondemnable I am sorry :P
Review my answers pl ;)

Q: What is DRS (It was in the news then)?

A: I explained.

Q: Why does India don’t use it?

A: I explained.

Q: What are causes of error?

A: I explained mainly the ball tracking part. With an example in which a batsman
got a DRS wrong off an spinner’s bowling because on TV it clearly looked that the
ball spun, but DRS showed it straight.
Q: What is difference between Wrist Spinner and Finger spinner? Give examples.

A: I gave.

Q: How can you make ball tracking better?

A: By increasing the shutter speed of camera (more frames per second available)

Q: Why is so much discussion about nature of pitch. What is it all about?

A: I explained different types of pitches in different countries and why they suit
particular kind of bowlers - spinners, seamers, swing bowlers, reverse swing
bowlers etc.

Q: OK explain me the science behind the different kind of swing bowling?

A: Though I always had general understanding, I was so fortunate to have read an

article, few days ago, by a scientist who was good friend of Imran Khan in Oxford
and who tried to do research in the labs on request of Imran when he discovered
reverse swing in the nets. I nailed this answer. I guess, the prof also learned
something that day.

Q: Why do sometimes Test bowlers/batsmen not able to do well in ODI and vice versa.

A: Well having listened to commentaries in Test matches during childhood days, knew
that answer.

Q: How can you apply your knowledge of Computer Graphics in Cricket?

A: Mentioned a project one of my lab colleague did - from a video stream of whole
match, extract the pitch vision clips (camera angle used when the bowler balls and
batsmen plays the shot). Mentioned some extension to that project with respect to
using computer vision for training and player analysis.
