A COMPREHENSIVE SET OF HOMEWORK PROBLEMS

REINFORCED CONCRETE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN – CAE 320

Flexure

1. A tensile-reinforced beam has a width of 10 in. and effective depth of

20 in. to the centroid of the bars, which are all placed in one row. If
steel with a yield stress of 60,000 psi is used with concrete having f' =
4,000 psi, find the design moment, Mn, for the following cases: (a) As
= 2 No. 8 bars, (b) As = 2 No. 10 bars, and (c) As = 3 No. 10 bars

2. A simply supported reinforced rectangular beam with 24-ft. span is to

be designed to carry a service live load of 2,000 plf, in addition to its
own weight. Assume both the width and the effective depth of the
cross-section to be 19 in.; find the tensile steel required and select the
bars. f' = 4,000 psi and fy = 60,000 psi.

3. A singly reinforced rectangular beam is to be designed, with effective

depth 1.5 times the width, to carry a service live load of 1,500 plf, in
addition to its own weight, on a 24-ft. single span. Use f y = 60,000 psi
and f' = 4,000 psi, determine the required concrete dimensions and
steel reinforcement: (a) for εt = 0.0018 and (b) for εt = 0.0055.
Comment on your results and include a sketch of each cross-section
drawn to scale.

4. A rectangular concrete beam measures 12 in. in width and has an

effective depth to the tensile-steel centroid of 18 in. Compression
steel, consisting of two No. 8 bars, is located 2.5 in. from the
compression face of the beam. If f' = 4,000 psi and fy = 60,000 psi,
what is the design moment strength, Mn, of the beam, for the
following alternative tensile-steel area: (a) A s = 3 No. 10 bars, (b) A s =
4 No. 10 bars, and (c) As = 6 No. 10 bars?

5. For architectural reasons, a certain rectangular beam of 16-ft. span is

limited in cross-section to a width of 8 in. and a total depth of 16 in.
(Assume d = 12 in. since two layers of reinforcement are required; d' =
2.5 in.). It must carry a total service live load of 1.40 kips per ft. and a
total service dead load of 1.2 kips per ft. (including the beam weight).
If f' = 4,000 psi and fy = 60,000 psi, design the main reinforcement
and the minimum stirrups.

6. A T-beam has effective flange width of 30 in., web width of 14 in., slab
thickness 4 in., and effective depth to the steel centroid of 20 in. If
steel having a yield stress of 60,000 psi is used with concrete of f' =
4,000 psi, what is the design moment strength, Mn, of the beam for
the following alternative tensile-steel areas: (a) As = 3 No. 11 bars and
(b) As = 6 No. 11 bars?

7. A tensile-reinforced T-beam is to be designed to carry a uniformly
distributed service load on a 20-ft. simple span. The total factored
moment at midspan due to all loads is 6,240 in-kips. Concrete
dimensions, as governed by web shear and clearance considerations,
are b = 20 in., bw = 10 in., hf = 5 in., and d = 20 in. If fy = 60,000 psi
and f' = 4,000 psi, what tensile reinforcement is required at midspan?

Shear

8. A beam of 18 in. width and effective depth of 21 in. carries an

uniformly distributed factored load of 18 kips per ft., including its own
weight, and is simply supported on an 20-ft. span. It is reinforced with
ten No. 10 bars in two layers continuing uninterrupted into the
supports and four No. 10 compression bars. If f' = 4,000 psi, through
what part of the beam is web reinforcement required:

(a) if Vc = 2 f c  b w d

(b) if Vc =  1.9 f c  + 2500  w V u d/ M u b w d < 3.5 f c  b w d ?

9. Design the web reinforcement for the beam of Problem 8: (a) No. 3
stirrups with fy = 60,000 psi and (b) No. 4 stirrups with f y = 60,000 psi.
Compare the total weight of web reinforcement for these two
alternative designs. What is your recommendation for the final
design?

Development Length

10. The continuous beam is reinforced top and bottom with No. 8 bars.
Find development length for positive and negative reinforcement and
the cut-off points according to 2011 ACI Code. f' = 4,000 psi and fy =
60,000 psi.

Column

11. A column 18 in. square is reinforced with four No. 11 bars. The
minimum distance from the centroid of a bar to the concrete surface is
2.5 in., f' = 5 ksi, and fy = 60 ksi. If the column is axially loaded
(design eccentricity e = 0), find Pu.

12. If the eccentricity of load on the column of Problem 11 is e = 11.0 in.,

find Pu and Mu.

13. If the eccentricity of load on the column of Problem 11 is e = 3.5 in.,

find Pu and Mu.

14. Design a 18-ft.-tall tied column to support an unfactored dead load of

100 kips and an unfactored live load of 60 kips. The loads are applied
at an eccentricity of 2 in. at the bottom and 4 in. at the top. Both
eccentricities are on the same side of the centerline of the column.
Use f' = 3 ksi, and fy = 60 ksi.

Footing

15. Design a footing for a 22-in. by 22-in. square column. The column has
eight No. 8 bars arranged symmetrically and is subjected to concentric
3
dead and live loads of 372 kips and 117 kips, respectively. The bottom
of the footing should be 4 ft. from the ground surface. The weight of
soil is 120 pcf, and the allowable soil bearing capacity is 3 tons per
square foot. fy = 60,000 psi and f' = 6,000 psi for column and 3,000
psi for footing.
