Running Head: STUDENT COLLABORATION LESSON PLAN 1

Student Collaboration Lesson Plan:

Ensuring Ninth Graders Sound Relevant

Phoenix University
STUDENT COLLABORATION LESSON PLAN 2

Students that pursue a career in agriculture are required to speak with professionals that

have a unique set of vocabulary words pertinent to their area of expertise. My job as an instructor

to freshman students, is to help equip them with the jargon necessary so they can be taken

seriously, and to show respect to the professionals they will encounter. This lesson plan involves

introduction to new vocabulary words, development of a real-life scenario for these terms and

the ability to demonstrate the new terms amongst their peers. To introduce these terms a brief

video will be played titled, “Uter-inside Out: The Incredible Dr. Pol”, (WILD, 2014) showing a

scenario where understanding terms similar to those provided would be crucial.

Further, the students will be assessed on their understanding of the material by

collaborating in groups of two and creating a presentation to share with the class. This will allow

the students to share their experiences with one another and is considered beneficial since all

students come from different backgrounds and levels of understanding of agriculturally based

activities. The rubric (see page 4), spans over three categories including: their ability to present,

quality of material presented, includes all terms required. To best collaborate, the students will

use Google Slides to present their projects. After submission, this mode of presentation will

enable me to view the edits that were made and evaluate the contributions from both students.

Also, this enables the students to work on their project outside of school if necessary. To enrich

their presentations, they will utilize Google Sketchpad to draw simple diagrams or add images

into the presentation. Required materials for this lesson include the vocabulary list (see page 5),

access to Google slides, Google Sketchpad, example video, and grading rubric.
STUDENT COLLABORATION LESSON PLAN 3

Instructions are as follows:

A. Get into groups of two and watch the video presented in class.

B. Define all vocabulary terms on the list provided.

C. Using these terms, create a story line that provides context clues and

imagery to show an understanding of the text. Present your story to the

class using the Google Slides application.

D. Use Google Sketchpad to apply images and drawing to the slides.

The goal of this lesson is to broaden the agricultural vocabulary of the students so that

they can show an understanding of general concepts when they go out into the workforce.

Secondary goals are to make them more prepared as presenters and gain the ability to utilize

practical programs available within Google tools to use later in their studies. The use of Google

Sketchpad and Google slides in this lesson plan enables the “design [of] authentic learning

activities that align with the content area standards and use digital tools and resources to

maximize active, deep learning”, which is the educator’s International Society for Technology in

Education (ISTE) standard 5b. (Education, 2018)

Some students may require special accommodations. This lesson plan can be adapted to

fit any needs necessary. This will be accomplished through giving more time to complete the

task for those with learning disabilities or a teacher’s aid to help read the instructions to the

students. Also, the use of additional google tools such as Google Translate to help bridge

communication gaps for international students are available. These accommodations make this

lesson an “advocate for the equitable access to educational technology, digital content and

learning opportunities to meet the diverse needs of all students”, which is the educator’s ISTE

standard 2b. (Education, 2018)

This lesson plan can expand for future use, adheres to specific ISTE standards, is

accommodating to those in need, and finally incorporates new learning techniques into the

classroom. All in all, this lesson should prove to be effective in helping freshman students sound

relevant while out in the real world.
