The primary reason, in my opinion,
lies in the fact that the 'secular' media has
simply never ever told its readers the
whole issue in its correct perspective. I
also suspect that to many of our 'secular'
journalists, history began on the day they
filed their report! In that light, here is a
chronological sequence of this issue,
which highlights only one fact - 'Judicial
Pussyfooting'!
Caught in the Web of the Law
Courts : What started as a simple ‘title suit’
at the turn of Independence in an Indian
Court of Law, got transformed into a
Presidential reference of 07 Jan 1993 –
“Whether a Hindu Temple or any religious
structure existed prior to the construction
of the Ram Janma Bhumi – Babri Masjid
(including the premises of the inner and
outer courtyards of such structure) in the
areas on which the structure stood?” In
simple terms, for 44 years, our Courts of
law ‘Decided not to decide!’ Here is the
chronological sequence, culled from 'open
source publications'! A caveat is needed:

1955 : Their Lordships of the
Allahabad High Court had observed then:
“It is very desirable that a suit of this kind
is decided as soon as possible, and it is
regretted that it remains undecided after
four years. The delay appears to be
principally due to the fact that the record
of the proceedings in the trial court was
summoned by this court in 1953 on the
application of the present appellants. Had
this not been done, the suit would
probably by now have been decided . - - -
We, however, consider it extremely
desirable that the suit should be disposed
of at once and we accordingly direct that
the record of proceedings is sent back to
the lower court. ”
1989 : In the intervening 34 years,
the only contribution of the judicial process
was that instead of two suits , there were
five. All of them were taken over by the High
Court . A Special Bench of three judges
was constituted to hear them together.
1990 : On 12 Jan 1990, the
Supreme Court advised the Allahabad
High Court : “If the defendants press the
contention regarding the maintainability
grounded upon limitation to be raised as
the preliminary issue, the High Court
which is trying the case will do well to
entertain the request.” The Allahabad High
Court refused to heed the counsel of the
Supreme Court, and by its order of 22 Aug
1990, refused to decide any issue as a
preliminary issue. An appeal was filed
against that order with the Supreme Court
in Sep 1990, for if the suits were not
maintainable at all, the matter would be
over. Nothing was done. The appeal
remained pending.
1991 : In Oct 1991, the U.P. Govt
took over the land under and around the
structure.Writs were filed both in the High
Court and the Supreme Court against the
acquisition. On 15 Nov 1991, the
Supreme Court transferred all the writs to
the High Court. It said that the High Court
was taking over the case for final disposal.
1992 : Even in July 1992 , the
hearings were going on in the High Court.
When Kar Seva began in July 1992, the
Supreme Court said that if the U.P.
Government could stop the Kar Seva, the
Supreme Court would transfer the
acquisition cases to itself and decide them
all together. The Kar Seva was stopped.
But the Supreme Court eventually decided
not to take over the cases on the ground
that the hearings before the High Court
were in an advanced stage. It however
stressed that the High Court should

FRUSTRATED UPA, HOME MINISTRY
- Of late, the UPA government has been
challenged on many a fronts and forced to go
on the back foot for (1) the unexplained rise in
cost of commodities, (2) the unwarranted rise
in education fees by schools and colleges, (3)
the terrorizingly tangled situation in Jammu and
Kashmir, (4) the unresolved issue with the
Maoists who controlling around one-third of the
country's hinterland had recently massacred
even the police personnel, (5) extended
injustice and pain to the survivors of the Bhopal
gas tragedy two decades ago, (6) the
government's inability to control the unrests on
both the north eastern and north western
borders of the country, and much more.
What is more, the UPA government and
its allies - including the new friend Communist
Party of India (CPI) - seem to be fearing the
slow but steady rise in the awareness of these
failures, rising corruption among the politicians
among the country's middle class people and
slowly turning against the establishment
(Congress-led UPA government). These

Kar Seva was once again set for 06
Dec 1992 . The High Court concluded its
hearings on 04 Nov 1992. The U.P.
Government and others repeatedly
requested it to deliver its judgement, one
way or the other. Nothing happened.
Instead, one of the judges proceeded on
leave. The inevitable happened on 06 Dec
1992. The High Court delivered its
judgement on 11 Dec 1992!
1993 : The Presidential Reference
quoted above. Nothing happened. As
stated earlier, Their Lordships of the
Supreme Court ‘decided not to decide’.
However, the judgement stated (para 57):
“ - - - -. The Hindu community must,
therefore, bear the CROSS on its chest,
for the misdeed of the miscreants
reasonably suspected to belong to their
religious fold.”
I quote the Belgian historian Dr.
Koenraad Elst on his take on the foregoing
sentence of thejudgement. “This
illustrates nicely what we had all
suspected for a long time: the English
speaking elite in India has preserved the
mind-set of the Christian British colonial
rulers. The ruling class has borrowed its
secularism from the anti-religious reaction
in the late-Christian West. India is still
under Brown Sahib colonial domination,
and the legal apparatus which denies
Hindus the right to their sacred site can,
in circumstances critical to the
establishment’s legitimacy, still be used
as an instrument of colonial oppression.”
A telling comment indeed!
2003 : Nothing happened in the
intervening period! However, on 22 Aug
2003, after more than half-a-century of
‘judicial pussyfooting’, the Archaeological
Survey of India (ASI) handed a sensitive
report to the Lucknow Bench of the
Allahabad High Court. The ASI had been
mandated by the Court to excavate the
foundation level underneath and around
the demolished Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.
In the winter of 2002-2003 the Court had
ordered a search of the site with a ground
penetrating radar by the company Tojo
Vikas International Ltd., which had been
used during the survey for the Delhi Metro
Rail. Canadian geophysicist Claude
Robillard concluded from the scans that
there was ‘some structure beneath the
demolished masjid’ (Rediff.com – 19 Mar
2003). It was on this basis that the ASI
undertook the excavation work.
I hasten to add that I'm sceptical of
a decisive verdict in this case, when their
Lordships pronounce their judgment.
Baba Ramdev and other religious and social
leaders to stand up against the atrocities and
failures of the UPA government. If left
unchecked, these developments could pose
immense difficulties in the forthcoming
elections in 2014.
Frustrated or otherwise with these gross
failures and the emerging challenges, the UPA
government is desperate to divert the attention
of the people both within the House - Parliament
- and outside. So, it uncontrollably throws up
the subject of the "saffron terror". It was this
desperateness that was visible, audible and
laughable when P Chidambaram "warned" the
protectors of the society to be extra vigilant on
an issue that is simply non-existent in the
country.
Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi
has rightly called for Prime Minister to apologize
on P Chidambaram's comments. Leader of the
opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley rightly
responded saying: "Chidambaram is fighting
an imaginary battle against saffron terror
instead of concentrating on fighting Maoists and
tackling Jammu and Kashmir situation". BJP
MP Yogi Adityanath was more caustic in his
observation. He said: "Only someone with

lawyers completed their arguments, we are
expecting the verdict of the court, the RSS
Sarsanghachalak said.
Shri Bhagwat reminded the audience
that Sri Rama was our ‘national hero’ and
the makers of Indian Constitution
recognised this by inserting the portrait of
Rama in the original copy of our
Constitution. Sri Rama was the very
personification of all good virtues in human
life which India cherished since its hoary
past. Rama was the very embodiment of
Dharma - a system that sustained the
society, inculcated the values of humanity
and fraternity amongst people; and Rama
himself lived upto these ideals which he
wanted others to follow.
Therefore, Shri Bhagwat exhorted
the people to take up the fulfillment of
mission of Sri Rama that is to establish
these values again. ‘Rama’s mission is
the mission of Dharma’, he said and urged
the people to be prepared for this grand
mission like Hanuman.
The RSS Sarsanghchalak opined
that Hanuman was all devoted for the
cause of Rama. He had no personal
ambitions of any kind. His was a fully
devoted life at the lotus feet of Sri Rama.
Like him, we have to arouse this strength
in our society; and lead such awakened
society to establish the grand temple at
Ayodhya for the welfare of entire humanity.
This awakened societal strength is to be
used only for the mission of Lord Rama
and not for any political party or
association, Shri Bhagwat cautioned.

THREE-COLORED TERRORISM IN

engaged in various types of conversion related
atrocities including their involvement in killing
84-year old Swami in Orissa in 2008 and the
last one is Islam supported which has spread
terror across the world.
The existence of the Red Terror has been
acknowledged by both the Government and the
Home Minister and their own failure to tackle
or subdue it, but it is completely silent on the
fast-growing fanatic, religious war - Jihad - that
is spreading fast within and around the country
as also across the world. The Indian
government behaves as if it is non-existent in
India! Is the Congress and the UPA government
silenced by the Muslims within and outside the
country?
Both the print and electronic media are
known friends of the Congress in particular and
the UPA government in general. Therefore, the
media-wallas also parrot in high pitch the
propaganda that their paymasters wants to be
conveyed through their medium, and grossly
ignore their primarily role of being both

talents, education and strength for the
nation. This vow will be fulfilled only after
the grand temple at Ayodhya is erected",
he said.
Shri Bhagwat said that Hanuman’s
strength was the basis of Rama’s mission
of establishing Dharma on this earth. Today
also we need this strength and hence this
‘Hanumatshakti Jagaran Abhiyan’, he
added. He exhorted the people to read
‘Hanuman Chalisa’ daily as a vow till the
Rama Temple is constructed at Ayodhya.
"Strength of Hanuman has to be awakened
among the members of the society to make
them ready to attain the target of
construction of the temple with the speed
of a wind", he said.
The ‘Hanumatshakti Jagaran
Abhiyan’ was launched at Nagpur with full
grandeur and fanfare under the auspices
of Sri Hanumatshakti Jagaran Samiti. The
program began with chanting of Hanuman
Chalisa 11 times. Shri Bhagwat also
released the book title "Sri
Ramjanmabhumi Muktiche Abhutpurva
Andolan" in Marathi penned by former
editor of Tarun Bharat Shri D B alias
Mamasaheb Ghumre and published by
Nachiket Prakashan.
Earlier, Shri Barai Maharaj and VHP
Central Committee member Sriramji Joshi
appealed to the people to be ready for
construction of Rama Temple at Ayodhya
and create a social awareness through
this unique awareness campaign.
The programme was attended by
Vidarbha regional committee president
Prafulla Gadge, working president Vijayjit
Walia, vice president Satnam Singh
Sokhi, VHP State Secretary Prof Hemant
Jambhekar and others. Besides,
prominent personalities of Nagpur

temple existed today was a sentiment that
several crores of Hindus shared in the
country and wanted the government to
respect that feeling.

Compare the minuscule figures of
casualties from the non-existent 'saffron' terror
with the casualties of the non-spelt out Jihadi
terror that has been reported worldwide, and
also about the White terror of Christianity.
According to a U.S. State Department report,
India tops the list of countries worst affected
by Islamic terrorism. Type the word 'Jihad' in
Google search engine and one can see
40,500,000 mentions and type saffron terror
and there are just 419,000 mentions and these
are separate words!
Would Home Minister P Chidambaram
and UPA government have the gumption/
courage to give Jihadi attacks a name of the
color known the world over? If political
correctness is important for Muslims, and they
are silent on this dangerously spreading threat,
why not use the same political correctness for
the Hindus and stop throwing up the non-
existent 'saffron' terror and misguide the
peoples of this country?
And as one of the writers in DNA India
had in late-July 2010 raised a question on
Saffron Terror - Do we want one? He asked:
"The rogues in the media and the state are,
through repeated assertion, convincing people
of the 'fact' of Hindu terrorism. Do we want to
make it a self-fulfilling prophesy?" It is high time
for the Intelligent Kshatriya among the Hindus
to arise for safeguarding themselves and the
Nation too.

Why the home minister
invoked 'saffron terror'

Home Minister P Chidambaram's
comments on 'saffron terrorism' on
Wednesday raised many an eyebrow.
Thus far he had refrained from making
such sweeping allegations despite severe
pressure from his party colleagues like
Digvijay Singh .
In fact, on earlier occasions, when
suggestions where made by the media and
others regarding the so-called Hindu terror
he used to gently disapprove of making
any categorical statements in this regard.

suddenly turned to saffron terror which,
according to his own account, comprised
incidents that happened much before the
21 months that he was gloating about.
'That does not mean that the threat of
terrorist attacks has gone away. I wish to
caution you that there is no let-up in the
attempts to infiltrate militants into India. There
is no let-up in the attempts to radicalise young
men and women in India. Besides, there is
the recently uncovered phenomenon of
saffron terrorism that has been implicated in
many bomb blasts of the past. My advice to
you is that we must remain ever vigilant
and continue to build, at the central and
state levels, our capacity in counter-
terrorism,' he said at the DGPs' conference.
The last incident that was attributed
to Hindu youths took place in September
2008 in Malegaon. There were some arrests
starting with October 2008 that included the
arrest of a couple of Hindu religious
personalities and, most importantly, one
serving and one retired army officer.
Subsequently, the investigating
agencies like the Central Bureau of
Investigation and the Anti Terror Squad,
Rajasthan , have made some more arrests
of Hindu youth alleging them to be
responsible for a couple of incidents that
have happened between August 2007 and
Malegaon -- roughly a period of 14 months.
How come the home minister
jumped to the conclusion that there was
a 'phenomenon' called saffron terrorism?
Can he explain where is the
phenomenon? Do a couple of sporadic
cases that took place during a period of
14 months become a phenomenon?
More importantly, what does he
mean by saffron terrorism?

Saffron is a very sacred colour
associated with Hinduism, Buddhism,
Jainism and Sikhism. Every Hindu/Jain
temple, Buddhist vihara and Sikh
gurudwara, besides other religious `
places, hoist saffron flags. Most of the
Hindu/Buddhist saints adorn saffron
fatigues.
Or is he referring to the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh-led organisations
that are generally characterised as
'saffron organisations'?
It would have been helpful had he
displayed a little courage to explain what
he meant by saffron terrorism. Obviously
he must have had the RSS-led
organisations in mind when he talked
about saffron terror.
It is unfortunate that the home
minister chose to use such vocabulary in
his address. There is neither saffron terror
nor any phenomenon of it. Neither the
RSS nor any other known Hindu group
ever espoused or supported terrorism. But
that doesn't answer all the questions
including the timing and 'intent' of the
home minister's statement.
A more charitable explanation for his
exhortation could be that he was trying to
please his detractors within the Congress
party. People like Digvijay Singh are after
his life and have been making irresponsible
statements about jihadi terrorism and
Maoist insurgency for some time now. The
home minister has been their hate target.
Another equally charitable
explanation could be that he has tried to
unleash the non-existent demon of saffron
terror with an eye on the upcoming Bihar
election. For political pundits this might
seem a more plausible argument.
The Congress strategists predicted
that Nitish Kumar can be defeated in Bihar
if his alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party
could be broken. The dirty tricks department
of the Congress party might use this saffron
terror tag to create unease in the ruling
alliance in Bihar. Predictably, this could help
them in garnering Muslim votes.
But for those who can see through
the game plan, the home minister's
statement doesn't seem that simple. It is
politics, no doubt, but a long term one.
There is a sinister design to
establish the notion of Hindu or saffron
terror in the global terrorism discourse.
Such a thing will help some sections in
India politically and electorally as it will put
the Hindu organisations and parties on the
back foot.
Internationally it will help them in
pleasing their Western masters including
agencies like the Central Intelligence
Agency. After all, the CIA is a handmaiden
of the Western Church. Demonising
Hindu groups is an important agenda item
for the Western powers.
There is another important question
about this 'phenomenon'. That is: who
created it? Before 2007 there was no so-
called saffron terrorism. Despite the home
minister's claims there is none after the
Malegaon arrests in 2008 either. It existed
for some 14, 15 months.
As I mentioned earlier, the most
important players in this 14 to 15 month
'phenomenon' were people like Colonel
Srikant Purohit and a self-styled swami
called Dayanand Pandey. Who are they?
How come a serving army officer and a
Congress-created swami became the main
players in this so-called Hindu/saffron
terror? Who is behind them?

Mr Prasad is a technologist with expertise
in electronic voting machines, now the de facto
method of voting in Indian elections. He
collaborated with a team headed by Mr Alex
Halderman, a Computer Science professor at
Michigan University and Mr Rop Gonggrijp, a
security researcher from the Netherlands, on a
project that involved detailed technical analysis
of Indian EVMs. Their studies yielded conclusive,
scientific proof that EVMs could easily be
tampered with. They conducted several
demonstrations across major Indian cities
showing how EVMs could be rigged.
On August 17, 2009, the EC invited them
for a similar demonstration and laid illogical
conditions under which the demonstration was
to be done. What followed is detailed in the
lucid Democracy at Risk (GVL Narasimha Rao,
VeTa), also available as a downloadable book
in pdf format (www.indianevm.com).
Mr Halderman captures the sequence of
events that followed after February 2010 “when
an anonymous source approached Hari and
offered a (EVM) machine for him to study. This
source requested anonymity and we have
honoured this request. We have every reason
to believe that the source had lawful access to
the machine and made it available for scientific
study as a matter of conscience, out of concern
over potential security problems.” The team
used this EVM to demonstrate on a TV channel
how it could easily be tampered with. In the
first week of August, the police visited Mr
Prasad and recorded a statement about this
EVM he had used.
And then, suddenly on August 21, he was
arrested on a bizarre charge - that of stealing
an EVM from Maharashtra. In his text message,
Mr Prasad says, “I am not worried or scared at
all by these tricks from the EC. I came to know
that because of tremendous pressure, police
had no other option than to arrest me. Our new
CEC is positive in resolving EVM vulnerabilities
but it seems even he came under pressure to
change his stance from what he promised us
on August 10.”
The episode clearly reeks of intimidation
by the EC or whoever directed the arrest. As Mr
Rao’s book shows, the EC has been obstinate
in its stand that EVMs are “foolproof”, “perfect”
and “tamper-free” despite overwhelming
evidence to the contrary across the world. Mr
Halderman, Mr Prasad, et al have shown that
by embedding a Bluetooth (wireless technology)
device, it’s possible to manipulate the EVM using
remote devices like a mobile phone.
The book painstakingly explains this and
other methods of manipulation. Ideally, India
should’ve followed suit - or ordered deeper
inquiry - when the Netherlands, Germany, Italy
and Ireland banned EVMs because they were
“easy to falsify,” “risked eavesdropping” and
“lacked transparency”. What’s worse is that
Indian EVMs leave no trail - there is no
mechanism to track suspected election fraud.

In Pakistan, we see the long lines of
the affected and refugees, dressed in their
long robs, blaming the government for
not coming to help them, and so they just
sit down and wait and wait, and they are
absolutely incapable of organising
themselves to help themselves, because
the suffering that befall them is God's will-

The EC’s obstinacy thus defies reason.
On one hand, the EC insists that EVMs are
impregnable. So there should really be no
reason to not let the researchers examine the
machine. What or who is it scared of? Indeed,
if it were transparent, it should’ve actually
facilitated Mr Prasad and team to expose any
vulnerability in the EVMs. That would’ve
restored our faith in the health of our democratic
institutions. Instead, Mr PV Indiresan issued
an outlandish analogy equating a call for a
scientific inquiry into EVMs with testing the
chastity of Sita. This only helps deepen
suspicions about foul play in the issue.
The UPA reached a new low in 2009
when it bulldozed the appointment of Mr Navin
Chawla as Chief Election Commissioner who

to hold any public office which demands an
attitude of fair play and consideration for
others.” And now the arrest of Mr Prasad has
again sent an ugly signal. Is it safe to conclude
that ordinary citizens will be persecuted for
seeking the truth? Ironically, on August 9, the
Cabinet passed the Whistleblower Bill, but who
should people turn to when the state’s
institutions themselves begin to look like agents
of intimidation?
Tampering of EVMs is a serious issue
with potential to shatter the foundations of
democracy. The logical end of this will mean
that only one party gets to wield power forever.
If the voting process is subverted, it won’t be
long before national interest will be equated
with a particular political party’s interest - it
harks back to a black era when “India was
Indira”.
Mr Prasad’s arrest also shows how many
of our fundamental freedoms are slowly being
taken away without our knowledge. Equally, it’s
ironical that the state is virtually powerless
against a dangerous man like Abdul Nasser
Madani but swoops down on an individual who
asked uncomfortable questions concerning
national interest.
However, it’s heartening to see the
groundswell of support that has emerged
across the country for Mr Prasad. Petitions,
Internet groups, blogs and articles have
strongly condemned the strong-arm tactics of
the EC. VeTA has also indicated approaching
the Supreme Court for a “renewed legal battle”.
This news has already attracted
international attention with people comparing
this with the Florida EVM fiasco. It’s a huge
blot on India’s image in the world, which regards
our elections as reasonably “fair and free”. The
EC needs to urgently show complete
transparency with regard to this episode -
admitting that the EVMs are flawed is not a
personal insult to the EC.
This issue is in many ways a good test
of the saying about eternal vigilance and is an
opportunity to prove Ambrose Pierce wrong
when he said that voting is “the instrument and
symbol of a free man’s power to make a fool of
himself and a wreck of his country.”

arrest of Hari Prasad
Dr. Subramanian Swamy, President

following statement in connection with the
arrest of Mr. Hari Prasad.
“I condemn the arrest and remand
sought by the Maharashtra police of Mr.
Hari Prasad, a software engineer from
Hyderabad, on the bogus charge of having
stolen an electronic voting machine (EVM).
Mr. Hari Prasad had accompanied me to
the Election Commission on September 3,
2009 to help demonstrate that the EVMs
can be rigged contrary to the boast of the
then Chief Election Commissioner Mr.
Navin Chawla.
In these proceedings which were
videotaped by the Election Commission,
Mr. Prasad came very close to
demonstrating that the EVMs can be
easily rigged to favour one political party
or another. The Election Commission
aborted the meeting at that stage and said
that they needed further permission from
the then Chief Election Commissioner Mr.
Navin Chawla to continue, but assured us
that they will fix another date soon.
Till now no such date has been fixed.
In the meantime my Writ Petition on the
tamperability of the EVMs is being heard
by the Delhi High Court. The next date of
hearing is August 25, 2010.
The Maharashtra police have
obviously acted on instructions from the
Election Commission of India to arrest
Hari Prasad. The charge that the
electronic voting machine was stolen is
absurd because no elections were going
at that stage nor was this machine
obtained during an election period.
Therefore, the Union Law Minister must
now intervene and see that Mr. Hari
Prasad is set free immediately.
Moreover, Mr. Prasad along with Mr.
V.V. Rao had obtained directions from the
Supreme Court of India to the Election
Commission to consider their various
points that they were making in their Writ

Baltistan region in Occupied Kashmir,
where Pakistan is handing over de facto
control of the area to Beijing, a report said.
The New York Times said that there
were two important new developments in
Gilgit-Baltistan; a simmering rebellion
against Pakistani rule and influx of an over
7,000 soldiers of the Chinese People’s

in Kochi. Sufiya is tenth accused in the
case pertaining to the burning of a Tamil
Nadu state bus at Kalamassery on
September 9, 2006. Nazeer is the first
accused in this case also.

forum with the objective of providing legal
assistance to Kerala’s Islamist leader and
PDP chairman Abdul Nasser Madani.

Madani, the forum would also organize
discussions on the alleged flaws in the
laws under which the Islamist leader was
arrested in connection with the terror case.
Madani was booked under the Unlawful
Activities (Prevention) Act, which was one
of the reasons why he was not granted
anticipatory bail by two courts, including
the High Court, in Karnataka.
The chairman of the forum, which
would have branches in Bangalore and
Delhi also, is three-time CPI(M) MP
Sebastian Paul. Senior journalist and rights
activist BRP Bhaskar is the chief patron of
the forum. CPI(M) fellow-traveler and a
theorist of its neo-liberalist leadership

demand for “one-rank one pay” for all, the
Congress has alleged that the medals
were fake and bought from local markets.
The party also alleged that the
members of Indian Ex-Servicemen
Movement (IESM) used a red chemical
for their signatures.
“The medals which were returned
have been purchased from Sadar Bazar
in the Delhi cantonment area. We have
proof that they have been bought
recently,” Praveen Davar, Secretary, AICC
Ex-Service Department, said.

of dissent against Maoists, residents of
over a dozen villages in West Midnapore
district today took out a protest rally
coinciding with the first day of the 'Martyrs
week' being observed by the rebels to mark
the 38th death anniversary of Naxalite
leader Charu Majumdar, police said.
Holding traditional weapons and
anti-Maoist placards, the villagers, which
included students and women, of the
tribal- dominated Harda gram panchayat
area took part in the rally.
According to the villagers, Maoists
had attacked Kakotpal and Beldanga
villages in Harda on July 12 in order to
force them to take part in their

mathematics had influenced the West

scholars decoded the ancient scientific
texts written in Sanskrit.
According to Prof. Kim Plofker, an
eminent mathematician from the USA,
numerous ideas and methods derived
from Indian mathematics became familiar
in Europe long before Western scholars
began systematically studying Sanskrit
scientific texts.
Prof Kim, who is participating in the
ongoing International Congress of
Mathematicians in the city, has prepared
a paper - Indian Rules, Yavana Rules and
the Transmission of Mathematical Ideas -
highlighting India’s contribution to mathematics.

included "Indian numbers" and "Indian
calculation" adopted by Arab
mathematicians and the "Hindoo method"

postulated by Pythagoras was practically
applied in the construction of temple
pillars in India much before the birth of
the Greek philosopher in 5th century BC.
Prof Kim’s presentation explores the
historical process of adoption and
assimilation of "foreign mathematics" both
in and from India. She has studied a
number of Indian texts, as old as 3,000
years and as recent as 18th century, to
support her ideas on Indian mathematics.
She also dwelt on the origin of the concept
of cipher or zero in Indian mathematics
and how it was propagated to the outside
world through Arab mathematicians.

by the electric supply department. So

wake of looming terror threats, the police
have, for the first time, instructed various
city mandals to hire the services of private
detectives to ensure that pandals are
secure and the festival passes off
peacefully, police sources said. The job
assigned to detectives will include keeping
a hawk’s eye on any suspicious elements
looking to start trouble and additionally to
look out for pickpocket gangs.
Ganeshotsav will be celebrated on
September 11. The next couple of months
will see a slew of festivals like dahi handi,
Ganesh Chaturthi, Ramzan and Diwali -
all of which are celebrated with traditional
fervour.
The matter came up for discussion
during a high-level meeting with the city
Commissioner of Police. Senior police
officers holding the ranks of Joint
Commissioner and Additional Commissioner
were present to discuss issues relating to
the Ganesh festival. The final call about
private detectives will now be taken by
