Issue 12/2016 December 2016

Index for prices

LATEST TRENDS
Together with the week before Easter, December is the year’s top
consumption period for seafood. Traders know this very well, and Groundfish 9
all frozen products have usually already reached the market well
Flatfish 10
before the start of the holiday period. As a result, actual trading
during this month, at least for frozen seafood, is rather slow, with Tuna 11
declining demand and downward trending prices. For fresh
Small Pelagics 12
products, however, there will be a final rush just before 24
December, sending prices soaring. Cephalopods 12

Crustaceans 14
GROUNDFISH
Bivalves 16

Cod quotas are expected to be lower in 2017 compared with this Salmon 16
year, and this is likely to push prices upwards. Christmas is the
Trout 17
main consumption period for wet-salted products from both
frozen and fresh raw material, meaning demand is strong and Freshwater fish 17
prices are sky high. Cod prices in Poland are stable, but are likely
Non Traditional
to rise next year due to substantially reduced quotas in the Baltic
Sea. Species 18

SMALL PELAGICS

Fishing quotas in the Northern Atlantic for small pelagics will be higher in 2017 than in 2016,
as the resources is considered to be in good condition. Prices are likely to tend downwards,
but the industry is looking forward to a bright future.

The 2017 mackerel quota for the North Sea and the North Atlantic has been set by the
three-party negotiations between the EU, Norway and the Faroe Islands. The total TAC was
set at 1 054 000 tonnes, which is an increase of 14 percent compared with 2016.

Norwegian marine researchers have proposed a massive increase in the herring quota for
2017. The proposal is to increase the quota by 72 percent, from 376 000 tonnes in 2016 to
646 000 tonnes in 2017. Such an increase would mean that on-shore processing plants would
be able to operate on a more consistent basis.

Prices of Pacific herring are declining on the Vladivostok market as there is plenty of product
on offer, while reports in Moscow are of good demand and good price levels, particularly for
larger sizes.

BIVALVES

French Bouchot mussels are still present in the market, as well as Irish rope mussels,
Spanish galloprovencialis and Dutch bottom mussels.

The oyster range will increase just before 24 December as oyster is a must during the
festive season. Prices are expected to go up quite strongely due to expected lower
production compared with last year.

SALMON

Starting in late 2015, a variety of developments have together created an almost perfect set
of market conditions from the perspective of the farmed Atlantic salmon sector in Norway.
Firstly, a severe algal bloom in Chile, combined with biological challenges in Norway, has
seen global production of farmed Atlantic salmon drop by some 7% this year, exasperating
an already tight supply situation. At the same time, major US retailers have turned to
Norwegian product to counter consumer fears about antibiotics, French demand for
Norwegian fish has recovered after a long lull following negative media coverage, and the
krone has remained weak against the euro and the US dollar. The net result has been soaring
prices, record export revenues and healthy profit margins for Norwegian aquaculture
companies.

As of week 48, the NASDAQ salmon SALMON - in France, origin: Norway (3-6 kg/pc)
index was at NOK 66 per kg (EUR 7.32
per kg), some 38% higher than the same EUR/kg
week in 2015. And, according to figures 8.0
7.0
published by the Norwegian Seafood 6.0
Council (NSC), total salmon exports in 5.0 6.14
the first 10 months of 2016 were worth 4.0

NOK 49.2 billion, already NOK 1.6 billion 3.0

2.0
higher than year’s total in 2015. The
major EU markets of Poland and France
again took the largest shares of
Norwegian exports, but there was also
significant growth in the US and in East
and South East Asian markets, particularly the Republic of Korea and Viet Nam. Meanwhile,
the UK industry also benefited significantly from the extreme price levels reached in 2016 as
UK production volumes rose compared with 2015 while supply from its major competitors
dropped. The referendum vote to exit the EU and the subsequent drop in the value of the
pound has served to push prices up further.

Although high, current farmed Atlantic prices are down from the extreme levels seen in the
first half of 2016, after softening somewhat in the last quarter of the year as late-summer
harvest volumes restored some degree of balance to the market. Biomasses at Norwegian
farms in the last quarter are almost at 2014 levels as improved water temperatures

6
boosted growth in the pens. However, in an integrated global market, it is the total
available supply which determines prices, and the severe drop in production in the second
largest supplying country, Chile, will continue to keep prices high for European farmers and
exporters for at least the first half of 2017, with the majority of the expected 4-5% rise in
production in 2017 expected to hit the markets in the second half of the year.

TROUT

The farmed trout industry in Norway saw

even more impressive gains in export TROUT - Ex-farm prices in Italy
revenue in 2016 than the salmon sector, EUR/kg
almost doubling its total export value in 4.5
the first 10 months of 2016 to NOK 3.3 4.0

billion, although it should be noted that 3.5 3.30

3.0
the impact of the loss of the Russian 2.5
3.20
market hit trout producers relatively 2.0
harder and these growth figures partly 1.5

reflect a recovery. Nevertheless,

boosted by limited supply and booming
demand in Belarus and Japan, trout Trout: Salmo spp Rainbow Trout: Oncorhynchus mykiss

prices have risen in line with those of

salmon. Indeed, the NSC reports that prices for fresh whole trout actually surpassed those
of fresh whole salmon in the last quarter of 2016 and supply continues to tighten.

The European seabass and seabream

market is currently somewhat cautious of being swamped by oversupply as export volumes
continue to rise in year-on-year terms from all key producers, although the sector appears
to be maintaining profitability for the time being. Turkey has been responsible for a large
proportion of the increase in supply this year, particularly for bream. As of September,
Turkish year-to-date export volumes of fresh farmed bream were up 42% compared with
2015, to 29 313 tonnes. This extra volume, destined for Russia, the Middle East and a number
of large EU markets including Italy, has seen bream prices drop significantly this year,
although the weak lira has cushioned the blow somewhat in Turkey’s case. In Greece, the
lower prices overall meant sales of bream were flat for the first 9 months of 2016 in value
terms despite a volume increase, but bass prices have generally been high and revenue from
bass sales is taking some pressure off company margins. However, with high production of
juveniles signalling further supply growth over the next few years, a combination of
marketing efforts, technological innovation, sector consolidation and product diversification
is going to be necessary to maintain profitability.
