Preface to the course on Principles and Fundamentals of Normal and Pathological Human
Neuropsychology.
It is with great pleasure that I write the preface to this course on normal and pathological
Neuropsychology planned and organised by Dr. Guido Enrique Bravo.
Neuropsychology is the study of the relationship between brain and behaviour; it is concerned
with how the brain affects behaviour, emotion and cognition. This course will cover the
fundamentals of this discipline incorporating knowledge from the medical, cognitive and
behavioural sciences. The rigorous course will provide attendees with a solid theoretical
framework of knowledge in neuropsychology. The teaching will be a mixture of lectures,
participation and investigation by the attendees.
This is an exciting time to be involved in Neuropsychology. The first known report of treatment
of brain injury is from an Egyptian document of 2500–3000 years ago. The papyrus was
discovered by Edwin Smith in Luxor in 1862. It describes the treatment of 48 cases of injury of
which 27 were brain trauma cases. It contains the first known descriptions of the cranial
structures, the meninges, the external surface of the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, and the
intracranial pulsations. The word ‘brain’ appears for the first time in any language. The
treatment procedures demonstrate an Egyptian level of knowledge that surpassed that of
Hippocrates, who lived 1000 years later.
Alexander Romanov Luria is often said to be the grandfather of neuropsychology. Working with
Russian soldiers in world war two, he made large contributions to our understanding of how the
brain affects behaviour. He always believed that psychological research should be for the benefit
of humankind and argued that we should look at the person in his or her social context. A friend
of Luria’s, the British psychologist, Oliver Zangwill (1913 – 1987), is sometimes known as the
father of British neuropsychology. He worked in Bangour Hospital just outside Edinburgh with
British soldiers who had survived brain injuries during the war. In an important paper published
in 1947, Zangwill said “We wish to know in particular how far the brain injured patient may be
expected to compensate for his disabilities and the extent to which the injured human brain is
capable of re-education” This question is as important today as it was sixty years ago. Our centre
in Ely, just north of Cambridge in England, was named after this man. This was partly because
he was so important in establishing neuropsychology in the United Kingdom and partly because
of his work with survivors of brain injury. More recent changes in neuropsychology include the
influence of brain imaging, new theoretical models, new assessment and treatment techniques
for helping survivors of brain injury and possible new pharmacological therapies which can be
combined with neuropsychological approaches.
From the Oliver Zangwill Centre in England, we wish you all the best for the success of you
course in neuropsychology.
