ETHEPHON PLUS
AS A YIELD STIMULANT OF HEVEA
RUBBER TREES
Introduction

Yield stimulant with Ethephon is a routine practice in most commercial rubber plantations and
rubber smallholdings with rubber trees tapped on panel BO-1, BO-2, B1-1 and beyond.

Ethephon Plus is not a straightforward carrier formulation. It is also made up of certain nutrients,
additives plus anti-oxidant. They are all mixed together in one formulation according to specific
formulation and concentration, which would improve the efficiency of Ethephon, enhance the
trees tolerance to Ethephon stimulant and promote sustenance of yield response over the long
term.

Data provided for 2 years shows that during both the years the yield response to Ethephon Plus
5% were better than of Ethephon 5% with yields being 13-15% higher. The yield response to
Ethephon Plus 5% were consistently better than that of Ethephon 5% during the two years of
evaluation.

Assessment of Yield Performance

The data for the three task size commercial trials for 21months i.e. the 1st. year and 9 months of
the 2nd. Year. Data shows that during both years, the yield responses of all three clones to
Ethephon Plus 5% were better than that of Ethephon 5%. The higher yields for Ethephon Plus
irrespective of clones ranged from 18 to 25%. The increase in yields to Ethephon Plus 5% above
that of Ethephon 5% was 18 to 22% for clone PB 260, 23 to 25% for clone PB 217 and 19 to 21%
for clone PB 235.

Ethephon Plus is available in four concentrations READY TO APPLY APPLICATION
namely:-

Ethephon Plus 150 - Light Blue Label at 1.5% concentration suitable for just opened young trees
of less than 5 years old,

Ethephon Plus 250 - Dark Blue Label at 2.5% concentration suitable for more than 5 to 10 years
old tapping trees,

Ethephon Plus 500 - Dark Green Label at 5% concentration suitable for more than 10 to 15 years
old tapping trees and

Ethephon Plus 1000 - Red Label at 10% concentration for trees exceeding 15 years in tapping
prior to felling.

However, Ethephon Plus can be prepared in higher concentration than 10% on made to order
basis for specific purpose.

1. The concentration to be applied will be precise and well mixed in the carrier that is

2. There will be no problem with the separation of stimulant from the carrier since it

3. Wastage will be very minimal. Exact amount to be applied can be measured and

given to workers or the number of trees to be applied per container will be exact.
4. The consistency and viscosity of the formulation is assured since it is factory prepared
unlike formulation prepared by dilution from higher concentration.
5. Uniformity of response will guarantee without marked variation in yield response that could
arise from in-site or on site preparation.

In view of the above and in order to get maximum response from Ethephon Plus, it is best to use
ready to apply formulation at the desired concentration.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
5% a.i. Ethephon Plus (ready to apply formulation)

1. One kilogram of 5% a.i. Ethephon Plus (Green) contains 50 grams of Ethephon.

2. The chemical name for Ethephon is (2 Chloroethyl) phosponic acid with a chemical formula
C/CH2CH2PO(CH)2.
3. Physical Properties of Ethephon

(a) Melting Point at 74 to 75oC

(b) Aqueous solutions stable below PH 3.5.
© Very stable under ambient conditions when formulated in suitable carrier.

4. LD50 orally in rats : 4229 mg/kg.

 5. Uses : As a Plant Growth Regulator and as an effective yield stimulant of Hevea brasiliensis
(rubber trees) when applied along the groove of the tapping cut or below the tapping cut at
recommended concentration, dosage and tapping system used.
6. Type of formulation : Water-based gel or paste.
7. Ethephon Plus (5% a.i.) formulation has been analysed by the Analytical Chemistry
Division of the Malaysian Rubber Board to confirm that the active ingredient in the
formulation is Ethephon and the correct concentration.

ETEPHON PLUS LATEX STIMULANT

Pengenalan

Perangsangan hasil menggunakan Etephon dipraktik ke atas pokok getah ditoreh atas panel B0-1,
B0-2, B1-1, B1-2 dan panel tinggi (high panel) H0-1 ke 4 pada kebanyakan ladang getah.

Etephon Plus adalah bahan perangsang hasil alternatif yang digunakan untuk pokok getah. Ini
adalah rumusan serba baru yang berbeza daripada formulasi Etephon yang digunakan dalam
industri getah sekarang. Formulasi ini mempunyai bahan-bahan tambahan yang boleh menambah
kecekapan Etephon, menambah toleransi pokok kepada perangsang Etephon dan menambah
nutrien bagi hasil untuk jangka masa yang lama. Harganya adalah setanding dengan formulasi
Etephon lain yang ada di pasaran dan ia memberikan kelebihan peningkatan hasil kepada
pengguna tanpa melibatkan bayaran kos tambahan.

Etephon Plus boleh didapati dalam empat kepekatan yang sedia digunakan:

(ii) Larutan akueus stabil pada pH <3.5
(iii) Sangat stabil pada keadaan sekeliling apabila diformulasikan dalam bekas yang sesuai.
c) Ujian tahap LD50 pada tikus adalah 4229 mg/kg
d) Kegunaan : Sebagai Pengawalatur Pertumbuhan Tumbuhan dan sebagai perangsang hasil
efektif bagi Hevea brasiliensis (pokok getah) apabila disapu sepanjang alur torehan atau dibawah
alur torehan pada kepekatan dan dos yang disyorkan.
e) Jenis formulasi : Gel atau pes berasaskan air.
f) Formulasi Etephon Plus dianalisis oleh Analytical Chemistry Division, Lembaga Getah
Malaysia untuk memastikan Bahan Aktif (AJ) dalam formulasi adalah Etephon dan dalam
kepekatan yang telah ditentukan.

Kaedah Penggunaan

Sapu 0.5gm Etephon Plus Latex Stimulant secara rata ke atas alur torehan dengan menggunakan
berus lukisan yang berukuran lebih kurang 1 cm lebar. Etephon Plus hendaklah menutupi
bahagian dalam alur torehan dan bahagian atas panel.

Etephon Plus disapu pada hari apabila pokok tidak ditoreh dan apabila tidak hujan. Penyapuan
semula adalah disyorkan jika hujan dalam 12 jam selepas penyapuan. Ini adalah untuk
memastikan tindak balas hasil yang efektif.

Etephon Plus tidak boleh digunakan sepanjang musim luruh.

Faedah menggunakan Etephon Plus dalam formulasi sedia digunakan

· Kepekatan yang digunakan adalah tepat dan konsisten / sekata oleh sebab ia dicampur dengan
sekata dalam bekas yang digunakan dalam formulasi sedia digunakan.
· Perangsang akan dicampurkan dengan lengkap di kilang, maka pemendakan perangsang dalam
bekas semasa penstoran/penyimpanan tidak akan berlaku.
· Pembaziran adalah sangat kurang. Kuantiti yang tepat yang perlu disapukan digunakan boleh
disukat dan diberikan kepada pekerja atau bilangan pokok yang boleh disapukan per bekas adalah
tetap.
· Kekonsistenan dan kepekatan bagi formulasi ini adalah terjamin kerana ia dihasilkan di kilang,
tidak seperti formulasi yang disediakan dengan pencairan daripada kepekatan yang tinggi dengan
pembawa seperti minyak kelapa sawit.
· Tindakbalas adalah dijamin sekata tanpa perbezaan yang ketara antara pokok dimana ini adalah
sukar didapati dengan formulasi yang disediakan di lapangan.
· Pengacauan berterusan bagi formulasi ini tidak diperlukan sepanjang masa penggunaan di
lapangan kerana pemendakan tidak akan berlaku.
