My sister
by Robert Edwards

My sister Naomi is eighteen, two years older than me. She’s quite tall and she’s got dyed blonde hair. She always
wears lots of make-up and she’s got a piercing in her nose. My parents were very annoyed when she came home
with the piercing. In fact Mum is still upset about it and Dad says it looks ridiculous, but actually I think it suits her.
Now she wants to get a tattoo. There are lots of arguments about that at home, but Naomi knows what she wants
and she’s very determined.

A few years ago she was into fashion and she spent a lot of time shopping for trendy clothes, but she changed her
image when she met her boyfriend, Darren. Now she enjoys looking scruffy. She usually wears old jeans with a
black jacket and a pair of heavy black boots. She’s got a big collection of rings and earrings, too. She and Darren
both love heavy metal and they’re interested in motorbike racing. At the moment they’re saving money to go to the
Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix in Jerez.

member countries meet regularly to discuss how to co-operate with each other.
Some current projects include bringing the quality of education and schools to higher standards, for teachers and
students, supporting immunisation campaigns so that children are healthier, making people more aware of
HIV/AIDS and how to deal with it, helping young people to borrow money to start small businesses and studying

Leaving your children with their grandparents may be bad for the
little ones‟ health according to new research in the „International
Journal of Obesity‟. The British study showed that children who are
looked after by their grandparents tend to be more overweight or
obese. Researchers looked at over 12,000 toddlers between the
ages of nine months and three years. Kids who are looked after by
their parents or who go to nurseries had no similar risk of weight
problems, although children of richer parents were more at risk,
especially if the mother had a university education.
Almost a quarter of pre-schoolers are overweight. This research
could help reduce the rate of obesity in Britain. It should also send
an important message to grandparents – stop filling your
grandchildren with snacks and sugary treats. We all know
grandparents like to give children all they want. It is the same all
over the world. There are several possible reasons why young
children are more at risk of obesity with their grandparents. One is
that older people might be less aware of proper nutrition and so give
their grandchildren unhealthy food. Another possible cause is that
older people are less active and might not play with the children.

SAVING NEMO

Finding Nemo, the film, may have left cinemas, but in the southern sea the loss of
brightly-coloured anemone fish is a problem. For more than a decade the population
of anemone fish in the ocean has become smaller and smaller. The beautiful fish are
popular pets and thus they are often caught to be sold at fish markets.

These little Nemos are quite vulnerable to environmental changes, though. Many
suffer from the lengthy transportation times on their way to the market. Most die a
few days after being kept in a fish tank.

Yet the demand continues, and hunters comb the seas. To make money quickly,
some even add small drops of cyanide to the water. This causes all the fish in the
vicinity to become unconscious for a short time and float to the surface. This makes
it easier to get them, though many of the fish poisoned in this way will soon die.

Some species like the clown anemone fish are on the verge of extinction and the
only solution to give an answer to the commercial demand is to have fish kept at a
farm in order to produce new animals. In addition, the balance of the underwater
ecology will not be destroyed.

I. Add TRUE or FALSE and copy the evidence from the text to support your answer.
NO marks are given for only true or false.

32. Read this text: CELEBRITIES AND DRUG USE

It seems that every time we turn on the television or watch the news, there is at
least one celebrity into or getting out of some type of drug treatment centre.
Does it seem as if celebrities don’t care about their image?
Contrary to popular belief, the life of a celebrity isn’t all fun and games. It is a life
that is often filled with horrible schedules, back to back travelling and photo
shoots. Maybe celebrities should get more sleep .One thing is for sure: money
cannot buy you happiness … but surely can buy you drugs.
Everyone has problems - with their parents, friends or other family members.
However the difference between a regular person and a celebrity is that most of
us cannot afford a drug-ridden life style. We would never have enough money.
When you are a celebrity, you have everything. All you have to do is to say the
magic words to the right person and you can get whatever your heart or your
body desires.
When you become involved in relationships and break up, no one knows about
it unless we tell them. We are emotionally worried, but our sadness is done in
private. This is not the case in the life of a celebrity. For celebrities, everything is
under the microscope.
The problem with celebrities and drug use is that many of them think that they
are above the law. This is clearly not the case. In fact, many celebrities have
ended up in prison.

INTERNET MUSIC PIRACY
The music industry has announced an intensification of its campaign against
illegal file-sharing. It calls on music fans to buy their music online legitimately,
rather than risk the legal consequences of illegal file-sharing. There are now
over 100 legal online music sites in Europe offering a total of over one million
music tracks.
Users of file-sharing services such as KaZaA, EDonkey/eMule and Gnutella are
the target. This is a warning that no illegal uploaders are immune from legal
action, whichever service they are using. Individuals are charged with acting
illegally by making copyrighted music available on the Internet without the
permission of the copyright holder - this is against the law throughout Europe
and internationally. These people are likely to face compensation payments
averaging several thousand euros.
Illegal file-sharing has contributed to the decline in global music sales - down
US$6 billion in the last five years. For that reason, awareness campaigns
around the world have included music coalition websites, media advertising,
university and school projects and instant messages sent directly to people
using unauthorised services.
The fight against online music piracy has become the subject of daily debate, in
the media, in government and in ordinary households.

Add TRUE or FALSE and copy the evidence from the text to support your
answer. NO marks are given for only true or false.

a)The music industry campaign encourages people to get free music from

PURITAN SOCIETY IN COLONIAL AMERICA

The Church was the basis of 17th century life in colonial America. Most people in
Massachusetts were Puritans – colonists who had left England seeking religious
tolerance. But the strict Puritan code was far from tolerant. It was against the law not
to attend church – where men and women sat on opposite sides through long
services. The Puritan lifestyle was rigid: people were expected to work hard and
repress their emotions or opinions. Even the dark Puritan dress was dictated by the
church.

Since Puritans were expected to live by a rigid moral code, they believed that all sins
– from sleeping in church to stealing food- should be punished. It was God who
would punish sinful behaviour. When a neighbour would suffer misfortune, such as a
sick child, Puritans saw it as God’s will.

Children had to behave under the same strict code as the adults – doing everyday
jobs and attending church services. Children rarely played because Puritans saw toys
and games as sinful distractions.

Fear of magic and witchcraft was common in Puritan New England, as it had been in
Europe for centuries. Over 100 suspected witches were condemned to death in New
England during the 1600s. The hangings in Salem in 1692 were the last ones in
America.

THE RIGHT TO DIE
Ramón Sampedro was paralyzed from the neck down in a diving accident as a
young man. He had his music, his radio and television, his visitors, his window
view. He could control a computer, and write using a pen he held in his mouth. He
was cared for by his family, his brother and sister‐in‐law, his nephew, the lawyer
from a Right‐to‐Die organization, and Rosa, the woman from town who worked as a
disc jockey and pedalled her bike out one day to meet him. His family loved him
and didn't complain about the burden; his brother, in fact, was completely opposed
to euthanasia.

The film "The Sea Inside" is based on Ramón’s life. In 1998 he succeeded in dying
after planning his death in such an ingenious way that, even if all the details were
discovered, no one could be legally charged with the crime. Sampedro is played by
Javier Bardem, an actor of charm and gentle masculine force. In "The Sea Inside,"
Ramón does not care to live any longer and demands the right to die. He argues
his point with great conviction.

Bardem and Alejandro Amenábar, the film’s director, do not believe everyone in
Sampedro’s position should die. “This is simply the story of one man”, they say.

THE BRITISH PUB
Pubs are important in the social life of many British people. The word pub is
short for public house, but the full name is rarely used. Pubs serve a range of
alcoholic drinks, and also low-alcohol and soft drinks. Some pubs are also
called inns. These were originally hotels and some still offer accommodation.

Most pubs have a choice of bars (rooms to drink in). Drinks are sold from a
counter in each room, also called a bar. Under Britain’s licensing laws, alcohol
can only be sold to people over 18. Children under 14 are not allowed in pubs
unless there is a family room, that is, a room without a bar.

People often choose a bar near where they live as their local and go there
several times a week. At lunchtime, people may go to a pub with colleagues
from work, and in the evening they go with friends. Younger people sometimes
go on a pub crawl, visiting several pubs in the same evening.

Pubs have their own character and atmosphere. Some attract young people by
playing loud music or inviting live bands to perform. Others have televisions in
the bar and show sport games, football, above all. Some pub managers
organize teams to play darts. Theme pubs are decorated in a particular style.
The most popular is the Irish pub, which sells Irish beers and plays Irish music.
Most pubs are open only at lunchtime and in the evening, closing at 11:00 p.m.

McDonald's Hamburger University is considered to be the Harvard of the fast

79. Read this text: AIRPORT CITIES

Anyone who has ever spent time in an airport waiting for a flight knows that this can be
very dull. However, this is changing, as airports have already entered the twenty-first
century.
The rise and expansion of air traffic is causing many changes. Many people commute
for business reasons, and there has recently been a large increase in the air cargo
business. Food items produced in one place, for example, tropical fruit, may have to be
transported quickly for sale in another. In addition, the growth in Internet use has
expanded e-commerce, and customers who order items online expect delivery right
away.
As a result, airports and the surrounding areas have grown tremendously. Many
companies are building warehouses near runways, and high-tech firms are setting up
offices that are convenient for airline commuters. Other new airport buildings include
entertainment and sports facilities. Some “aerotropoli”, as these new airport cities have
been called, even include housing. Despite the noise and pollution, developers are
quickly building homes to house the increasing number of workers dependent on
airports.
Even without the adjacent businesses, airports themselves are growing. To meet the
needs of workers and travellers, airports are expanding their services. Not only has
shopping become more attractive and competitive, but some airports display works of
art, and the Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport even offers wine tasting.
The idea of building aerotropoli is now spreading beyond the USA, and there are plans
to build them in France, Brazil, South Korea, and Hong Kong. Wouldn’t it be nice if,
while you wait for your next flight, you could sit in a rocking chair (as in Boston Logan
International Airport, Massachusetts) and listen to live music (as in Austin-Bergstrom
International Airport, Texas)?
