My sister
by Robert Edwards
My sister Naomi is eighteen, two years older than me. She’s quite tall and she’s got dyed blonde hair. She always
wears lots of make-up and she’s got a piercing in her nose. My parents were very annoyed when she came home
with the piercing. In fact Mum is still upset about it and Dad says it looks ridiculous, but actually I think it suits her.
Now she wants to get a tattoo. There are lots of arguments about that at home, but Naomi knows what she wants
and she’s very determined.
A few years ago she was into fashion and she spent a lot of time shopping for trendy clothes, but she changed her
image when she met her boyfriend, Darren. Now she enjoys looking scruffy. She usually wears old jeans with a
black jacket and a pair of heavy black boots. She’s got a big collection of rings and earrings, too. She and Darren
both love heavy metal and they’re interested in motorbike racing. At the moment they’re saving money to go to the
Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix in Jerez.

The Commonwealth is an association of 54 independent member countries which were formerly parts of the British
Empire. These countries are found in all continents and their population is over 1.7 billion people. Canada,
Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Jamaica and India are some of its members. Queen Elizabeth II is Head of the
Commonwealth.
Commonwealth countries make a great effort to work as one and build a better world for the global community.
They help each other to make their economies stronger and to improve their systems of government and the skills
of their people. Heads of Government (usually Presidents and Prime Ministers) and Government Ministers of
member countries meet regularly to discuss how to co-operate with each other.
Some current projects include bringing the quality of education and schools to higher standards, for teachers and
students, supporting immunisation campaigns so that children are healthier, making people more aware of
HIV/AIDS and how to deal with it, helping young people to borrow money to start small businesses and studying
the rainforest so we learn to take good care of the environment.
Through many professional and over 60 non-governmental organizations, the Commonwealth works hard to make
improvements in the lives of people.

Leaving your children with their grandparents may be bad for the
little ones‟ health according to new research in the „International
Journal of Obesity‟. The British study showed that children who are
looked after by their grandparents tend to be more overweight or
obese. Researchers looked at over 12,000 toddlers between the
ages of nine months and three years. Kids who are looked after by
their parents or who go to nurseries had no similar risk of weight
problems, although children of richer parents were more at risk,
especially if the mother had a university education.
Almost a quarter of pre-schoolers are overweight. This research
could help reduce the rate of obesity in Britain. It should also send
an important message to grandparents – stop filling your
grandchildren with snacks and sugary treats. We all know
grandparents like to give children all they want. It is the same all
over the world. There are several possible reasons why young
children are more at risk of obesity with their grandparents. One is
that older people might be less aware of proper nutrition and so give
their grandchildren unhealthy food. Another possible cause is that
older people are less active and might not play with the children.
3. British grandparents are less strict with their grandkids than other
nationalities‟ grandparents.

Finding Nemo, the film, may have left cinemas, but in the southern sea the loss of
brightly-coloured anemone fish is a problem. For more than a decade the population
of anemone fish in the ocean has become smaller and smaller. The beautiful fish are
popular pets and thus they are often caught to be sold at fish markets.
These little Nemos are quite vulnerable to environmental changes, though. Many
suffer from the lengthy transportation times on their way to the market. Most die a
few days after being kept in a fish tank.
Yet the demand continues, and hunters comb the seas. To make money quickly,
some even add small drops of cyanide to the water. This causes all the fish in the
vicinity to become unconscious for a short time and float to the surface. This makes
it easier to get them, though many of the fish poisoned in this way will soon die.
Some species like the clown anemone fish are on the verge of extinction and the
only solution to give an answer to the commercial demand is to have fish kept at a
farm in order to produce new animals. In addition, the balance of the underwater
ecology will not be destroyed.

The Church was the basis of 17th century life in colonial America. Most people in
Massachusetts were Puritans – colonists who had left England seeking religious
tolerance. But the strict Puritan code was far from tolerant. It was against the law not
to attend church – where men and women sat on opposite sides through long
services. The Puritan lifestyle was rigid: people were expected to work hard and
repress their emotions or opinions. Even the dark Puritan dress was dictated by the
church.
Since Puritans were expected to live by a rigid moral code, they believed that all sins
– from sleeping in church to stealing food- should be punished. It was God who
would punish sinful behaviour. When a neighbour would suffer misfortune, such as a
sick child, Puritans saw it as God’s will.
Children had to behave under the same strict code as the adults – doing everyday
jobs and attending church services. Children rarely played because Puritans saw toys
and games as sinful distractions.
Fear of magic and witchcraft was common in Puritan New England, as it had been in
Europe for centuries. Over 100 suspected witches were condemned to death in New
England during the 1600s. The hangings in Salem in 1692 were the last ones in
America.

The film "The Sea Inside" is based on Ramón’s life. In 1998 he succeeded in dying
after planning his death in such an ingenious way that, even if all the details were
discovered, no one could be legally charged with the crime. Sampedro is played by
Javier Bardem, an actor of charm and gentle masculine force. In "The Sea Inside,"
Ramón does not care to live any longer and demands the right to die. He argues
his point with great conviction.
Bardem and Alejandro Amenábar, the film’s director, do not believe everyone in
Sampedro’s position should die. “This is simply the story of one man”, they say.

Most pubs have a choice of bars (rooms to drink in). Drinks are sold from a
counter in each room, also called a bar. Under Britain’s licensing laws, alcohol
can only be sold to people over 18. Children under 14 are not allowed in pubs
unless there is a family room, that is, a room without a bar.
People often choose a bar near where they live as their local and go there
several times a week. At lunchtime, people may go to a pub with colleagues
from work, and in the evening they go with friends. Younger people sometimes
go on a pub crawl, visiting several pubs in the same evening.
Pubs have their own character and atmosphere. Some attract young people by
playing loud music or inviting live bands to perform. Others have televisions in
the bar and show sport games, football, above all. Some pub managers
organize teams to play darts. Theme pubs are decorated in a particular style.
The most popular is the Irish pub, which sells Irish beers and plays Irish music.
Most pubs are open only at lunchtime and in the evening, closing at 11:00 p.m.
