Northway Vet Clinic

FIV/FELV

Feline Immunodeficiency virus is a serious disease affecting domestic

cats. It is insidious in its nature in that it can be contracted when the cat
is very young, but clinical symptoms are often only seen years later.

How FIV works, is that it interferes with the cat’s immune system to fight
infection, thus infected cats are at a much greater risk for getting other
viral, bacterial and protozoal and fungal diseases. Most cats eventually
end up dying from these secondary diseases.

The disease is spread through bite wounds and therefore outdoor cats
are a greater risk of getting the disease. Pregnant queens infected with
the virus, can give it to their kittens, either through the placenta or
through the milk.

Infected cats can often have persistent fevers and have a poor body
condition. Nearly 50% of infected cats will at some point show inflamed
gums and mouth. There is no treatment for this disease however the
best way to prevent your cat from contracting this disease is through
vaccination.

Your cat will initially need 3 vaccinations, 1 month apart and then a
yearly booster vaccination.

It has always been Northway Vet’s Protocol to practice preventative

medicine and would like to advise cat owners with outdoor cats to
consider vaccination against FIV.
CAT STERILISATION
If you are an owner of a cat that has not been sterilized yet, please
remember that with the daylight hours becoming longer again all unspayed
cats will becoming into season

HAVE YOUR FEMALE CATS SPAYED TO PREVENT UNWANTED KITTENS

AND YOUR MALE CATS NEUTERED TO PREVENT FIGHTING AND
POSSIBLY BEING INFECTED WITH FELINE AIDS.

Dog food Comparison

Many people say they cannot buy Premium Imported Veterinary Pet Food as its too expensive
compared to Super Market Pet Food.

We decided to do our own test on Super Market dog food compared to Premium Veterinary Dog
Food.

Veterinary food is better quality and value for money.

When we recommend our foods we aren’t trying to make a sale but do what is best for your pets
well being. You will see the results in your pets coat, health and longevity of life.

Notice the difference in colour, quantity for the weight required and cost per day.

Jack weighs 56kg; he is 2 years of age.

Sample 1 (Premium Imported Dog Food) Sample 2 (Supermarket Dog Food)

R539.00 for 15kg bag R120.00 for 8kg

56kg = 425g per day 56kg = 650g per day
35 days @ R15.40 per day 12 days @ R15 per day

THUS THERE IS ONLY A 40 CENTS DIFFERENCE OF COST PER DAY FOR A 56 KG DOG!
The importance lies in cost per day feeding NOT in initial price of the bag.

Premium Imported Veterinary Food use only the highest quality ingredients and contain:

*No artificial flavourings, colours or preservatives

The Funny Side of the Paw

Diary of a cat

Day 984 of my captivity!

Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around

their feet while they were walking almost succeeded. Must try
this at the top of the stairs.
In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I
once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair.
Must try this on their bed.
Slept all day so that I could annoy my captors with sleep depri-
vation; incessant pleas for food at ungodly hours of the night.

I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture.
This time however it included a burning, foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could
invent such a liquid?
My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.
