What’s Really Happening in Black America!

By Jamal C. Smith

The main focuses of this particular blog will be the New Black Awakening, Still Buying into the System, Division
Between the Genders, Division Amongst the Same Gender, Elders vs Youth, Division in the Consciousness
Community, and Keep Speaking Our Truths and Breaking the Stereotypes! This is in no way a complete analysis of
Black America. I have reviewed what I have written and I feel as though there is so much that I left out or just did
not explain enough. With that said I welcome comments, feedback and criticism. I’m not arrogant enough to think
that I have all of the answers. My aim is simply to spark thoughts and inspire change, whether I know about it or
not. It takes all of us to do something in order to spark real change.

Introduction
We are in a period of time where we are seeing some great progress, but also experiencing some serious lows
collectively. I like to think that means that some positive change is on the horizon for us as a people. Part of the
issue is that we are so dependent on a system that was never designed for us in the first place. However, we are so
damn good that we keep on breaking the code, which pisses off those who don’t mean us well. Trumpites, for
example, are furious and emboldened. They feel like their way of life and the system that has given them privilege is
fading away and they are prepared to fight until the death for it. Unfortunately for them (not for us) it is inevitable
that it will come to an end. We just haven’t fully recognized this yet and fear that it will rule forever which makes it
difficult for us to recognize the progress sometimes. It won’t. A system only has as much power as the people give
it. Not just Black people are fed up with white supremacy. Hell, even many whites are fed up with it. This is way
bigger than Trump or the republicans and democrats or even government itself. While it’s good to focus some of
our energy on politics, we must also focus it on our next moves and where we want to end up collectively. Take
notes from China. They have a plan, whether we agree with the plan or not. They haven’t gone the more traditional
war way. They are more on some Art of War stuff. Many people don’t even recognize what they are doing. I see you
though. More importantly the people buy into the plan and are, for the most part, unified (for whatever reason)
whether they live in China or aboard. That’s just one example. Why can’t Black people figure it out? Or can we?

The New Black Awakening

African-Americans or Blacks or whatever we call ourselves now-a-days are waking up. We are becoming more
conscious. That’s something to be excited about. However, we still haven’t found and/or brought into our collective
identity. This is also not the first time that we have woken up in our history in the American system. We had
conscious awakenings during the Reconstruction period, the Harlem Renaissance, Black Wall Street and Rosewood,
the Civil Rights Movement, The Black Power Movement, and the 1980s/1990s Consciousness Movement. Although
each one of these awakenings did help move the goal for us in some way, they had two things in common: white
supremacy saw them as threats and we were put back to sleep. I believe that this time around will be a little bit
different. All of the things that we have gained from the past movements (even though there are some Black folks
that believe that we didn’t gain anything) have accumulated to the point where it makes it difficult to put us back to
sleep. Simply put – We ain’t having that shit! One of those things is our self-awareness. I believe that today we
collectively know more and accept more about who we really. That’s the start to establishing our own identity rather
than the one that was created for us. There is also a better sense that we can’t simply rely on a system, which was
never created for us in the first place, to fix our problems. We need to work together, stop buying in to inferiority
complexes, combine and invest our money, start Black businesses or work for Black businesses, Support Black
businesses, invest time, energy and money into our families and communities, protect our families and communities,
heal our relationships, uplift one another, grow our own food, eat healthier diets and exercise, start our own schools,
create our own creeds, finance at our own banks, and stop killing ourselves through violence (although we are not
the only ones who do so) and abortions.

I want to highlight that last one for a moment. This is extremely important! Abortions are the number one killer of
Blacks in America Period! I know that Planned Parenthood has implemented some good programs for women
through the years and by all means get them if they are available. However, also recognize the origins of planned
parenthood and why most of their locations are located in urban communities. Planned Parenthood is the product of
the eugenics movement which purpose was the extermination of Black people and “rejects.” Hitler even utilized
some of the eugenics movement theories and principles in his extermination attempt of the European Jews and Black
Germans. Don’t take my word for it. Look it up for yourself. Here are a few quotes from the eugenics movement
spokesperson Margret Sanger (hero to Hillary Clinton btw):

“Colored people are like human weeds and need to be exterminated.” - Margret Sanger
“The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its members is to kill it.” - Margret Sanger
“More Children from the fit, less from the unfit – that is the chief aim of birth control.” - Margret Sanger

If you don’t see your self co-parenting with the person you are laying with, either don’t do it or take the necessary
precautions. There have been over 15 million Black abortions since the 1970s and the overwhelming majority of
them are not because of rape. This topic is so important because, as we know, by 2043 people of color will be the
majority in this country. However, that is not because of African-Americans. We are expected to be at the same
13% of the population that we already are. The Hispanic and Asian Cultures will be over 40% combined. Just
imagine if that 15 million were still here and procreated themselves. There is strength in numbers!

Still Buying into the System

In general many Black people are really tired of the bullshit. There are always exceptions to the rule and there will
always be people that will be afraid to challenge the system, however I don’t think it’s as bad as some may think. I
know there are some in the consciousness community that will challenge that theory, but I believe that is because
they have little faith in the people. There’s a difference of being fed up and knowing exactly how to fix the
problems, but no one will ever try to fix a problem until they are fed up. I think collectively we are trying to figure
this thing out. Have patience those of you who proclaim to be already Woke and recognize that your solution(s) are
not the end-all-be-all. They may be part of the equation though. We need each other.

Division Between the Genders

The strongest weapon against us right now is ourselves. We have been trained and condition since slavery times to
be against each other. It’s simple divide and conquer strategies. Willie Lynch 101 - Make them praise us, but fight
each other. If you take the male and assert authority over him in front of the female, you now become the de facto
leader while simultaneously destroying the Black family. You have created a divide amongst the Black Man and
Black Woman. It’s no different than many other species in the animal kingdom. I’m just going to put this out there,
many sistas (not all) do not respect the Black man as they do other men, even when he is handling his business. You
have been taught that the Black man ain’t shit and can’t do right and some of you have brought into the narrative
and even contribute to it when you proudly proclaim I don’t need a man. Lies! On the flip side, some of us brothas
do need to step our game up. We have been broken, but it’s time to reclaim our kingship and handle our business.
Stop being disrespectful to our Sistas! Take care of our responsibilities! No excuses! Black relationships (which
my next blog will be about) need some work and a lot of healing. The good news is that we have an excellent
opportunity to change that whether we are in relationships or not. It’s called mutual respect and appreciation. Black
Women are magical and everything, but it’s also time that we recognize that Black Men are also the Shit! Together,
on the same page, we are Unstoppable!

Division Amongst the Same genders

Our relationships amongst our own genders need improvement too. Brothas we must be more supportive for one
another. We don’t need to be in competition all of the time. Stop hating on brothas trying to make progress in their
lives and encourage them. Eliminate that HNIC mentality. Sistas, you can’t proclaim sisterhood while stabbing
each other in the back. Stop looking at these reality shows for just entertainment and start considering how we can
change these behaviors. Black Girl Magic is not effective when the ladies are plotting on each other over foolishness
and because of insecurities.

Elders vs Youth
I am a believer that we must honor our elders and listen to their wisdom and guidance. However, just because you
are older does not make you an elder or wise. There are a lot of older Black people who have been in positions of
leadership for way longer than they should have been. Oftentimes they don’t like to give up their seat because they
had to fight so hard to get it and gain respect, especially since they rarely got respect anywhere else. However, know
when it’s time to pass the torch. Also recognize that times have changed and what worked for you in the past it not
necessarily the direction we are going in now. We are experiencing a transition from survival mode to live life to the
fullest mode. The younger generations are a little more fearless thanks to the work that you put in for them/us. The
younger generations need to recognize the work that the older generations put in and the sacrifices that they made
and honor them. The older generations need to stop using their age and experience as an excuse to be controlling and
learn how to let go. It’s all about balance.

Division in the Consciousness Community

The “consciousness community” can be a blessing and a curse at the same time. It can be a blessing because of all of
the wisdom that it can impart and the momentum that a collective consciousness community can garner. It can be a
curse because many of the groups in it are steadily jockeying for position instead of taking each of their individual
knowledge and working together. This make it so easy for the enemy to infiltrate it’s agents of division, much like
they did with the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. Everyone thinks that their way of life and their plan is the
only effective means of fixing our struggle so they just argue with each other rather than make progress. It’s crazy
that there is always beef (i.e. Umar Johnson, Boyce Watkins and Tariq Nasheed). The powerful things that these
brothas could accomplish together are out of this world, but they are beefing. Maybe one of them is an agent or
something, but I like to think that all of their attentions are good. What makes matters worse are those of us who are
rooting for them and the modern day consciousness movement to fail --that crabs in a barrel mentality.

Egos always get in the way and nothing gets accomplished. It’s not about what group or organization you create or
associate yourself with. Not everyone has to accept your ideology in order to be down with the cause. It’s about our
Collective Blackness. Everything else is secondary. We need to get over ourselves and get to work together. Unite
and Fight! (since we love slogans, lol)

BTW!!! Our Blackness trumps our gender, religion and sexual orientation. This is not up for debate. Some of y’all
go harder for the secondaries than the primary and end up getting sucked up into agendas that are counterproductive
to the Black Agenda. I am Black first! Every other group practices this but us.

Keep Speaking Our Truths and Breaking the Stereotypes!

Don’t let anyone silence you. Your voice does matter. Start doing the work in your own family and community. We
don’t have to be recognized for everything we do. Just do it if you see that it needs to be done. It’s not about your
accolades and credentials. We don’t need to start another organization or movement if we just handle our business
every single day. Stop expecting other groups to respect us and start respecting ourselves. Why entertain those who
already hate us. That’s giving them too much undeserved power. We will be alright and we will make it!
