Down He Goes

UNITED STATES - Not even halfway through the 2017-18 season, the
National Football League is already ridden with many season-ending injuries. With a
total of 398 players sidelined, this brings up the debate of why so many players are
getting injured. Although football is a very physical and violent sport, this year has
had an especially high number of injuries.
According to the NFL Injury Datasheet, in all of 2014 there were only 596 total
injuries. With 398 injuries in the first 10 weeks, this puts the NFL on pace for a total
of over 730 injured players (including reinjuries & offseason injuries), which is almost
a 23% increase.
Although the league still hasn’t taken any action to fix this problem, a few players
are taking action. On November 9th, Seattle Seahawks middle linebacker, Bobby
Wagner, said, "It's extremely tough. You look at the game, you watch the game, you
see guys dropping down on both sides with serious injuries, minor injuries. We play a
very physical game, a physical sport, so to ask us to turn around and be ready after
Sunday —to turn around and have our bodies okay for that Thursday, it's really tough
to for us to do.” These words were said after Seattle beat the Cardinals, but not before
star cornerback Richard Sherman, along with five other starters, went down with an
injury. After arriving back in Seattle at 1 a.m. the players had only three days to rest
and recover for their next game, which was not enough time for full recovery. In a
recent study a health and fitness expert, Dr. John Berardi, PhD noted that “a given
muscle will not fully recover until seven to 14 days have elapsed after a hard
workout” (Livestrong.com). With players getting so few days to recover, it’s no
wonder their bodies are breaking down.
Despite the severe increase in injuries, the latest precautions targeting concussion
are proving successful. According to USA Today, concussions from 2012 to 2015
dropped by 36% from 173 to only 112. With a decrease in concussion related injuries,
NFL players aren’t at as much risk for lifelong injuries, such as brain damage and
have a lower risk of stroke.
Although the NFL’s new precautions are helping diminish excess concussions, steps
to also help decrease the number of physical injuries are in desperate need to be
addressed. With 15 of the top 100 players sidelined, and 8 for the entire season,
action needs to be taken in order to maintain health of the players.

To Stand Or Not to Stand

Football players kneeling, staying in the locker room, and locking
arms were all actions of protest that took place on Sunday,
September 24, 2017. Some claim that the players, their coaches, and
their owners were disrespectful to the country that day. During week
three of the National Football League season, many players knelt
during the National Anthem. The National Anthem is a patriotic
song that has been played at football games for over 60 years.
The National Football League started playing the anthem after
Japan surrendered in World War II. Since then, it has been played at
every single National Football League game each season. Americans
have always stood during the National Anthem to show respect to
our country. The reason players are kneeling during the anthem
began with former San Francisco49ers quarterback, Colin
Kaepernick.
Kaepernick knelt last year during the National Anthem because
he thought that American society was not treating African
Americans and minorities in the United States fairly. In 2016, 258
black people were killed by police officers, and 39 of those people
were unarmed (Huffington Post). In response, Kaepernick knelt
during the games. He stated, “I am not going to stand up to show
pride for a country that oppresses black people and people of color”
(The Ringer).
In the early weeks of the 2017 football season, many players
copied Kaepernick’s actions. In early September, over 200 players
knelt while others locked arms for social justice. In addition to these
players, the entire Steelers and Titans teams stayed in their locker
room during the National Anthem. When the Jaguars played the
Ravens, all the players knelt for the American national anthem.
However, when the British National Anthem came on, all the players
stood with their hands on their hearts. While these actions were
meant to protest injustice, they have been seen as disrespect to our
soldiers and country.
Many people are so angry that they are boycotting football. The
newspaper USA Today reports, “NFL ratings are down for the just-
started season, just as they were last season, and the stocks of the
major networks that have broadcast NFL games are falling, too.”
President Trump has also expressed strong feelings on the issue.
Although there are many controversies going on in the football
league, some players are choosing to stand. Some of those players
include New Orleans Saints’ veteran Drew Brees. He stood with his
hand on his heart along with Alejandro Villanueva of the Pittsburgh
Steelers. Although there is a lot of commotion around the league,
many people think that this will eventually calm down.

New information has recently surfaced involving Russian

group, created fake news on multiple social media sites in order to

Is Catalonia In Or Out of Spain?

On October 26, 2017, Catalonia voted to declare independence from
Spain (Washington Post). Catalonian people want to become their own
independent country and separate from Spain. Catalonia is a region in
Spain consisting of many cities. This argument started in 1714 when King
Philip V conquered many different territories and one of them was
Catalonia (Telegraph.co.uk).
Catalonia has wanted independence because they are economically
advanced compared to the rest of Spain. Since Catalonia has many different
seaports, they can easily trade, causing the economy to advance. If
Catalonia wants independence, then they will have to sign many treaties,
set up their own currency, army, get funding, etc.
Many people have different viewpoints on whether or not Catalonia
should be its own country. MaryPat Forenza, a Spanish teacher at Warren
Middle School says, “I don't know if Catalonia is ready to handle the
financial and political stresses of becoming independent. To be an
independent nation, you need to be part of an economic community.”

Watchung Hills - The Legacy Team

Three years ago, they won first place in Disney. Two years ago,
they won second. The team is back together this year, and it is their
goal to win first again. The Watchung Hills Cheer is a competitive
cheerleading team for the Pop Warner football program.
Cheerleading ranges from level one to five. Level one teaches
basic skills, and each increasing level requires more skills. Formerly a
level two team, the Watchung Hills Cheerleaders were eventually
persuaded by Captains Christina Dellisanti and Alexandria Angelini to

Watchung Hills Wolverines and the Watchung Hills Junior
Warriors are two different football teams competing for their own
championship titles in Warren and Watchung. The Wolverines have been
part of the Pop Warner organization for many years. Pop Warner is put
together through the volunteer efforts of the citizens of Warren. They are
the parents of the students coming together as coaches, team moms, and
other important roles that work with similar Pop Warner teams from
other towns that form a large conference. The Wolverines play
Montgomery, Flemington, and Bridgewater.
The other team in town, the Middle School Warriors, has bigger

Warren Middle School Introduces
New Principal

On September 7, 2017 the doors of Warren Middle School opened to
welcome back the staff and students, but some important changes were made. Last
school year, veteran principal, Mr. Comba, retired. Mr. Comba had been running
the show here at Warren Middle School for more than two decades, but this school
year Mr. George Villar is taking over.
Villar is quoted on the Warren Schools website explaining his
excitement for his new role, “From my first [meeting] at Warren Middle School....I
found students were friendly and eager to say hello, staff engaged in all manner of
instruction while the day moved along with a strong educational purpose”
(warrentboe.org).

Mr. Villar has plenty of experience with schools. He started out as a
history teacher on the middle and high school levels for eight years in Bernards,
New Jersey. However, his experience being principal began in 2003 as the assistant
principal at nearby Ridge High School. He retained that position until 2008. In
2009, Mr. Villar took on a position at Valley Middle School in Oakland, New
Jersey. Prior to his hiring at Warren Middle School, Mr. Villar was principal from
2010 to June of 2017 at Central Middle School in, neighboring town, Long Hill.

According to Mr. Villar, his first couple of weeks at Warren Middle
School “have been both exciting and very busy”. Although he works long hours in
school, Mr. Villar has many hobbies outside of school. He has been studying judo
for 13 years, and he possesses a black belt. He is a long time Yankee fan, as well as a
Miami Dolphins fan. Aside from sports, there is another thing that Mr. Villar
enjoys, and it is video games. “I like all app games, but I especially love Clash of
Clans,” Mr. Villar stated.
Mr. Villar is a man with many interests and seems like a great addition
to the staff of Warren Middle School. Both the staff and students are expecting
great things to come from Mr. Villar’s guidance and direction.

Students Take Action to Inspire
Younger Children

At Warren Middle School the Peer Leaders are a select
group of eighth grade students who have the important
responsibility of being role models. They serve as mentors to
younger students in the Warren Township School District. Peer
Leaders try to help influence the youth of Warren to avoid
dangerous behaviors to the best of their ability. They work hard to
achieve a common goal, which is a brighter future for Warren’s
youth.
The Peer Leaders program is a chance for eighth graders to
become an inspiration for those younger than them. “It’s a great
opportunity for leadership development and an opportunity to serve
your school as a role model and positive influence,” stated Dr.
Cooper, one of the teachers involved in the Peer Leaders. She works
alongside Mrs. Degen, eighth grade social studies teacher and Peer
Leaders Director.
The eighth grade Peer Leaders have already done a lot to start
off this new school year. They have conducted a Halloween Safety
Outreach to the kindergartners which helped the kids understand
how to stay safe during Halloween. Along with that, they have
participated in leadership workshops. One of their upcoming
projects is doing community service to develop leadership through
decision-making and teamwork. The Peer Leaders recently
presented the Eighth Grade Freedom Feast. The Eighth Grade
Freedom Feast is a way for the Peer Leaders to help their peers
recognize the importance of freedom.
The Warren Middle School eighth grade Peer Leaders
play an important role in inspiring younger students to do good.
They work closely with the school faculty advisers to make an
impact on younger students’ choices. They become their social and
academic mentors. The Peer Leaders are making a difference in
lives, one student at a time.

Student Technology Support
STS helps WMS Become its Best

STS, or Student Tech Support, is a group of seventh and eighth
grade students who help solve technology problems at Warren Middle
School. They use their knowledge to help teachers learn how to use
technology in the classroom. The team members are also on-call tech
helpers. There are two teams in STS. Team Seven is made up of seventh
graders, and Team Eight is made up of eighth graders. They sometimes
go from class to class helping teachers with their technology issues.
In the past two years, STS has been working on some exciting
initiatives. Last year, they used a mini-grant from the PTO to get a
brand new green screen which is used for putting an image behind a
student in a video. They are also experimenting with Raspberry Pi sets,
which are small computer boards that can be plugged into the boards,
along with TVs, chromebooks, or smartboards. This allows them to be
used for educational games. They are also working with Google
Cardboards, virtual reality equipment. STS is hoping to eventually
incorporate both of these in classrooms around the school.
This year, both teams have launched the Tech Dreamweavers
Program which aims to help teachers on a higher level. According to
President Noah Madura, there is a set process involved in executing the
program: “First, a teacher completes the survey sent out by Tech Coach,
Mrs. Zgombic, saying what they specifically would like to know more
about. Then three STS members will get placed with the teacher to
teach them about their chosen subject. They follow a ‘dream board’
until the teachers are comfortable with their subject.” There are
currently 19 teachers participating in this program. One of them, Mrs.
Slack, is working on going entirely paperless in all of her classes.
STS also has a Google Classroom, called STS 2, which has tech tips and
tutorials. On this classroom you can ask anybody in STS questions, and
they will be answered by a team member with knowledge in the
subject. The class code is dtu498.
A recent workshop STS presented was the Makey Makey
workshop, which was planned by Team Seven and then presented to
the sixth grade science classes. It involves using Makey Makeys to
display the power of technology. The coding workshop and the Google
Doodle workshop are also coming up in the near future. Overall, STS
helps both teachers and students around the school, working towards a
more technology-oriented school environment.

Innovative Way To Replace Schoolwork

Students throughout sixth, seventh, and eighth grade have been
working on solving the Breakout EDU boxes in the Library. This activity has
students working together with their friends to open locks and solve puzzles
that are based on topics that they are currently learning about. Breakout
EDU founder, James Sanders, created this after he experienced actual escape
rooms.
“These activities teach teamwork, problem solving, and critical
thinking to students,” said Mrs. Cassidy, the librarian at Warren Middle
School, who has assembled these boxes to challenge the students and help
them understand what they are doing in class better. While students are
trying to open the locks, Mrs. Cassidy is very helpful with providing clues to
confused students.

On November 8th, Mrs. Cassidy was interviewed about how she feels
about this activity. She explained, “The 8th graders have done the escape
boxes on the book they are reading in Language Arts, The Outsiders, and
what they are learning in Journalism, facts and opinions. The 6th graders
did them on what they were learning in science classes. The boxes are also
available for any subject and grade level,” she said.
Some parts of this activity can be difficult for students to accomplish,
if they are confused on the topic or they don’t understand how to work with
the boxes, “I think the different types of locks can be hard to open, but if
more students attempt to do the boxes, I know it will get much easier for
them,” Mrs. Cassidy said.
These boxes can be useful for many schools and students who
have any confusion involving different subjects throughout their classes.

The Worst Hurricane Season Yet

The United States is having one of the worst
hurricane seasons on record. Deadly hurricanes have
already hit Puerto Rico, Texas, and Florida, causing
billions of dollars in damage. From the three biggest
hurricanes, Harvey, Irma, and Maria, two hundred people
have already been killed. All three of the hurricanes this
year are faster and more destructive than Hurricanes
Katrina and Sandy, both of which caused a lot of damage.
Four recorded hurricanes this year have reached
speeds that are category four to five. Three out of four of
those hurricanes have hit US territory. One of the
hurricanes, Hurricane Maria, hit Puerto Rico and the
whole island lost power. Hurricane Irma was a record-
breaking hurricane, maintaining a speed of 180 miles per
hour for nearly 40 minutes, and destroying most of the
Florida Keys (Washington Post).
Hurricane Harvey was the weakest of the three
hurricanes, but still cost Texas over 180 billion dollars in
damage, which is even more money than Hurricane
Katrina, according to Angela Fritz. Hurricane Harvey
caused a lot of flooding in Texas as over 19 billion gallons
of rain fell in a short amount of time. In addition to the
flooding and destruction, residents struggled with
dangerous bacterial skin infections in the dirty flood
waters, according to Lindsey Bever of the Washington Post
(Washington Post). Although Hurricane Harvey was a
Category 4 hurricane, it still managed to do more
monetary damage because the hurricane hit a more
populated and larger area.
This hurricane season has brought tragedy and
financial difficulty to many people. The Red Cross is still
accepting donations to help victims and their families
recover from the devastating natural disasters.

Dogs Affected By Hurricanes

In August, September, and October of 2017, three
hurricanes hit the Caribbean, Florida peninsula, and the
Texas coastline. Together, the hurricanes killed over 300
people and destroyed over 100,000 homes. These
hurricanes also displaced thousands of animals and left
them without homes and families. Several shelters and
people from all over the country have begun to help.
However, the amount of animals in need is greater than
the amount of people helping.
Shelters are making their best effort to keep up with
the vast amounts of new animals they rescue each day.
Wanda Merling, the deputy director of the Humane
Society stated “I cannot remember a time where I have had
to work back-to-back disasters like this. Today marks day
37 without a day off. ” The Humane Society, one of the
nation's most effective animal protection organizations,
also cleared out a shelter in South Carolina to use as a hub

Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) is also helping by taking
in older animals that were already in shelters to make
room for the many new animals coming in. This helps to
make enough space for the animals affected by the
hurricanes.
People tend to do the best they can to keep their
pets safe in times of disaster, but most feel that they have
to put human family members first. Sadly, this means that
many of the animals that are now in shelters are used to
being loved and cared for. They go straight from warm

Apple Vs. Samsung

As technology becomes more important, different companies are
constantly competing for the best product. Two companies at the center
of this cutthroat competition, Samsung and Apple, make technology that
is so similar, it can be difficult to select the best phone. The newest
phones that have been released are the iPhone 8, iPhone X, and
Samsung's Galaxy Note 8. The iPhone 8 is cheaper than the Note 8; it is
also is more well known than the Note 8. The cost of the iPhone 8 is
about $799.99. On the other hand, the Note 8 has more of a soft, flat,
surface that has a nice feel to it. It costs about $960.00. The iPhone 8 is
also a little smaller than the Samsung, which could be good if you want
to put in your pocket and for it to fit in your hand. If you like a better
screen display and a bigger phone, you might like the Samsung better.
The iPhone X and the Note 8 are pretty similar, with its bigger screen
and smooth touch.

The iPhone 8 is very similar to the iPhone 7. The iPhone 8 has the
same sensor button. The sensor button is not a push-in button like the
old iPhones. The iPhone 8 has also a new all glass display, which is
different from the iPhone 7. The front to back is all glass which, makes it
easier to break. There are still some bugs with the iPhone 8 which can be
fixed with new updates for the phone.
The iPhone X has features like face identification to get into the
phone by just looking at it. This phone doesn't have a button. It only has
a swipe bar on the bottom. Users can swipe up to get out of an app
instead of pushing a button on the bottom. The swipe bar is because of
the all screen display. It is a screen top to bottom.
The new Note 8 from Samsung is almost the same all the other
phones in Samsung. Samsung has not done major upgrades yet. The Note
8 has more defined pixels for the screen which makes the pictures look
amazing and defines the shadows more to make a definite picture.
Although both company’s have their differences, they are still great in
many ways. Each product has such great qualities, and characteristics.
When deciding to get a new phone it might be easier to know their
qualities. Apple still has glitches to fix but it is easy to hold. The
Samsung isn't much different than the ones before. This reviewer thinks
that one is better off getting an Apple phone rather than getting a
expensive Samsung.

The sweet country girl, Taylor Swift, has a new look. On August
25th, 2017, Swift released her new song: “Look What You Made Me
Do” as a preview for her new album, Reputation. In this album, Swift
is changing her image. She wants to be seen as angry and edgy. Other
stars have made derogatory statements towards Swift and this new
album seems to be her response. Swift has deleted all of her old photos
on Instagram, along with deleting her Twitter and Facebook accounts.
She has completely removed herself from social media and all of the
fighting in the music industry. In the past, she has had arguments
with other celebrities.
The popstar was born on December 13, 1989. She spent most of
her childhood in Pennsylvania, but at the age of 14 she moved to
Nashville, Tennessee to pursue her music career. In 2004, Swift
became the youngest artist to ever be signed to Sony/ATV Music
Publishing House (“Sonyatv.com”). In 2008, her lead single, “Love
Story” peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100
(“Billboard.com”).
The music video for “Look What You Made Me Do” hit a
record high of 43.2 million views within twenty four hours on
Youtube. The video highlights a feud between Kanye West and Swift.
Kanye and Taylor had many feuds in the past. For example, at the
MTV music awards, Taylor was giving her acceptance speech for Best
Female Video. Kanye then jumped on stage and grabbed the
microphone, yelling, “Yo, Taylor I’m really happy for you and I’mma
let you finish, but Beyonce had one of the of the best videos of all
time. One of the best videos of all time!" (“Cosmopolitan”). This upset
Swift, and started the feud between the two. While the video may
have caused some drama between Swift, Kanye West, and Kim
Kardashian West, Swift's fans seem to be standing beside her.

involves a young surgeon with autism and Savant Syndrome who
wants to become a surgeon. He is trying to be hired into the
pediatric surgical unit of Saint Bonaventure Hospital. His
mentor, Doctor Glassman, is fighting for him to be approved as a
surgeon by the board of San Jose Saint Bonaventure Hospital.
