Ethernet Switch Setup for Q-Sys

D-Link 1210 Series

Issue date: 16 December, 2014 Prelim.
Firmware:

Note that The 48 and 52 port models are not approved because they contain an insufficient amount of packet
buffer. The 28 port model is almost enough. The maximum number of ports that can be safely used on the DGS-
1210-28 or -28P is 25. The older DGS-1210 models (-16 and -24/-24P) have not been tested. The older DGS-1210-
10P and the newer, identically named model have both been tested.

These are the tested and approved models:

• DGS-1210-10P (A and B Revisions)
• DGS-1210-20
• DGS-1210-28
• DGS-1210-28P

Configuration steps

1. Log into the web interface. These switches ship with a default IP address of 10.90.90.90. You will have to
change an Ethernet interface on your PC to be on the same subnet to be able to access the switch. You
may use 10.90.90.91 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

2. The default password is ‘admin.’

3. If this is the first time logging into the switch, you will see a dialog entitled, “Welcome to Smart Wizard.”
You can just exit this, if you like. You could use this wizard to set the IP address of the switch, but you will
need to enter a Gateway address (even a fake one) to move to the next screen, which lets you assign a
new password. You can choose to leave the password as admin and change it later. Please check ‘Ignore
the wizard next time’ to avoid seeing this dialog again.

4. Once on the main configuration screen, you can see various version information about the switch. You
may want to make sure the switch has the latest firmware, by checking http://support.dlink.com and
searching for your model and hardware (as shown on the Device Information page).

5. Once you are satisfied with the IP address, password and firmware installed, set up the QoS.

6. Go to the QoS menu item in the left menu and select ‘802.1p/DSCP/ToS.’

In the top section of the right dialog, change ‘Select QoS Mode’ from 802.1p to DSCP. Make sure ‘Queuing
mechanism’ is set to ‘Strict Priority’ and click Apply (the one above the gray line)

This changes the lower section to allow you to map DSCP values to Priority queues. The older revisions
have ‘radio buttons’ rather than combo boxes, but the settings are the same.

7. Set the ‘From DSCP’ combo box to 34. Set the Priority combo box to 6 (‘High’ on the old revision). Then
click the Apply button (to the right of the screen).

8. Set the ‘From DSCP’ combo box to 46. Set the Priority combo box to 7 (‘Highest’ on the old revision). Then
click the Apply button again.

These settings cause the switch to assign QLAN clocking to priority 7 and QLAN audio packets to priority 6.

9. At this point, you can save the configuration if you do not need to set up IGMP Snooping. To save the
settings so that the switch will use the current settings after a reboot, click ‘Save’ in the upper right corner.
Click ‘Save Configuration’ from the drop-down menu.

10. Click the button in the right dialog. After this, the settings are retained through any power
cycles or reboots.

The following describes additional steps to turn on IGMP Snooping (a.k.a. Multicast Filtering) with the built-
in IGMP Querier.

11. Under the ‘L2 Functions’ item in the left menu, choose ‘Multicast’ and then ‘IGMP Snooping.’ On the old
revision models, this is ‘IGMP Snooping’ and is located under the ‘Configuration’ topic. There have been

reports that the ‘Report to all ports’ option causes problems when enabled.

12. The default settings are sufficient in the top section with two exceptions. Change ‘IGMP Snooping’ to
‘Enabled’ and uncheck ‘Report to all ports’ (this last item is only shown on the newer models). Then click
Apply.

13. On the older revisions, skip to Step 16. On the newer revisions: In the lower section, click on the numeric
VLAN ID (1) to open the IGMP Snooping VLAN settings.

14. The only thing you need to change are the ‘Querier State’ (Enabled) and ‘Fast Leave’ (Enabled). The ‘State’
should already be set to Enabled. Then click Apply. None of the checkboxes below need to be checked.

15. On the older revision, change ‘State’ and ‘Querier State’ to Enabled. Click Apply

16. Finally, go to the ‘Multicast Filtering Mode’ in the left menu.

17. In ‘VLAN ID’ type ‘1.’ In ‘Filtering Mode’ select, ‘Filter Unregistered Groups’ and click Apply.

18. At this point, you should save your settings as shown in Step 10-11.

19. If you would like to save a copy of your configuration to your PC, you can go to ‘Configuration Backup &
Restore’ under the ‘Tools’ menu at the top of the page (under the D-Link logo). From here, click ‘Backup’
and a file is downloaded containing you complete configuration including IP address. This file can be used
on other switches of the exact same model and revision, but you cannot change the IP in the file since it is
compressed. So when you deploy this configuration on another switch, you will first have to give the switch
a new IP address.
