Example 1 (HL)

“Describes an appropriate problem, which leads to a design opportunity”

 Problem
What led me to this problem was my love from biking
I like to listen to music while I ride but I am unable to hold my phone (which holds my music) while I ride for the
reason of safety. Due to this I need t carry a backpack while I ride so that I can safely listen to music with my
smart phone stored in my backpack.
While I am able to listen to my music safely now, I am still unable to use other apps such as camera/video and
GPS because I can not see my phone while it is in my bag. Also if I want to change the song or stop the music
I have to stop riding, take my backpack off and take out my phone.
This is also a problem for phone calls, though I would still have to stop to take a call the process opening the
backpack is time consuming.

Other considerations.
There is a lack of movement allowed while riding a bicycle. Due to the fact
that a bicycle is steered through handle bars means that the rider wouldn’t IMAGE OF CYCLISTS
have use of their hand for an extended period of time.

While skilled riders will be able to peddle a bike without have their hands on
the handlebars they would still need to replace their hands on the bars when IMAGE REMOVED DUE
going around corners or stopping. TO COPYRIGHT
REASONS
Because of this riders wouldn't be able to use items such as a cellphone, which
have so many features that could improve the riders experience.

Through I am looking towards designing a device which would allow you to

read GPS, listen to music and record video. I also have to acknowledge the
problem of safety when it comes to doing these tasks while also preforming
the main feature of a cell phone which is making calls.
Phones are expensive items so they are protected in a bag, but exposed to
damage if not protected somehow.

All this extra pressure can lead to accidents and even fatalities because a
bicycle has very little protection from other road users and vehicles, can re-
sult in fatalities.

 Safety and statistics in support of my project

This is also a safety project given how dangerous the roads are.
Using a cell phone takes your eyes off the road which puts you
are risk by being hit by someone who doesn’t see you coming
and you do see them because you are using a phone.
The use of a phone while driving a car or riding a motorcycle is
illegal is some countries, such as America where most States
prohibit teens from using a cell phone while driving.
Though it is not illegal to use a cell phone which riding a bicycle
in Bermuda it is still a high risk due to the lack of bike trails on
roads. In America in 2012 there were a total road fatalities of
33,561. 726 of those were pedal cyclist which is 2.2% of all fa-
talities. This percentage has risen since 2003 by .7% which
could be due to the increased popularity of smart phone in the
last decade. IMAGE OF CYCLISTS

Problems for the User

When riding a bike, the rider needs to have all limbs in contact
with the bike to use it safely.
This means looking for things in bags, reading maps, using cell-
phones etc. all are detrimental to the safety of the cyclist.
While skilled riders will be able to peddle a bike without have IMAGE OF
their hands on the handlebars they would still need to replace HEADPHONES
their hands on the bars when going around corners or stopping.
With regard to bike hire companies, cellphones can have many IMAGE RE-
features that could improve the riders experience. GPS, listen to MOVED DUE
music and recorded video are all features that would be nice to TO COPY-
make the most of, but could add risk to the experience. RIGHT
REASONS

It is also a problem of bike riders using earphones while riding. Listening to

music through earphone while riding a bike is illegal in a lot of places like
California and New York but isn’t heavily enforced. Using them in blocks out
all sound of traffic which can be dangerous if the car of motorcycles doesn’t
see the bicycle.

 Feasibility considerations
It will be adjustable between protract or landscape. Also the main part which connects the mount to the
bicycle will be firm so that your valuable smart phone is safe but also it is removable so that you can
put is anywhere on the bike.
This product will be targeted towards cyclists but also anyone who owns a bicycle.
Bicycles are a product which are massively owed, which make my target market is huge. Smart phone
are also massively owed and most people will owe an Apple iPhone or Samsung Galaxy smartphone .
This consideration does not mean the other smart phone such as the HTC One and Nokia Lumia will
not fit the mount; it will fit the largest of smartphones to the smallest .
After much though I discovered the major constraints of this projects. Firstly, everything about the
mount need to be adjustable to fit the user.
The rest for the phone need to be adjustable to fit the users smartphone due to the large variety of siz-
es.
The clamp connecting the mount to the bicycle also needs to be adjustable so the users can place it
where ever they want on their bike { the clamp needs to be completely firm and solidly connected to the
bike after the user adjusts it).
The material has to be hard and tough enough to keep the mount on the bike while riding the bike. The
rest for the phone has to be protected with some sort of shock absorbent materials for if you fall off
your bike, you phone would not crack when the bike hits the ground.

About and justification

Using the attribute list I was able to de-
sign a final idea which I will go onto cre-
Final Sketch ate.
The size is medium in length so that its
not hard for the user to see the phone
but at the same time it doesn't block the
view of the rider.
The design is easy to use because of the
simple spring operated mechanism in-
side the mount which made it easy to
extend the mount for any size of phone.
The physical model with be very colorful
so that a motorist can see the bike com-
ing, for safely reasons.
The bolts are tight and the springs are
strong to make the mount as secure as
possible.
All the materials will be weather re-
sistant.

Components
The mount is comprised of three parts:
1. Smart phone grip
2. Pivits
3. Handle bar clamp

2. Pivots
The pivots comprise of 3 pivot parts .
1. Smart Phone Grip One will attach to the smartphone grip,

tached to the top wall. The two parts clip together to create
the grip. These pivots will rotate the phone from
landscape to portrait.
Inside the grip the are two springs which with act as a ad-
justing mechanism for inserting larger phones. When the two
walls are pulled outwards the spring build up pressure which

the phone better.
Originally I wanted to use a metal clamp
but I found that it would add a lot of
weight to the bike and it will be hard to
adjust. So I decided to replace the mate-
rial with a hard plastic. It with me strong
but flexible.

Smart Phone Grip This is the process of how I developed the

smartphone grip.
First, I began to consider using springs in my grip so that
I can use the pressure a spring creates to hold the
phone. The drawing to the left is the first idea I came up
with. It shows two hooks with a spring in the
center, as the two hooks are pulled outward the spring
builds pressure. The pressure created will cause the two
hooks to be pulled back
inwards. I believed that I could adapt this idea to a mount
where this pressure will be used to hold a phone.
Next I designed a grip which takes the best parts of my
other ideas,
which was stated in my attribute list. the design uses the
most
important factors; the use of springs, light weight, small,
camera
visibility and of course a strong hold on the phone. The
drawing below is the first idea I came up with.

I decided to incorporate two

springs instead of one for extra
pressure. The grip is made of two
parts, back and front. The two
walls which will be putting pres-
sure on the phone with be sepa-
rated between the back and front
components. The two compo-
nents will be attached together
with small clips which will allow
the grip to slide up and down to
insert the smartphone. The two
springs will be putting pressure on
both components, one side of the
spring will be pressed against the
inside wall of the front component
and the other will be pressed
against the inside wall of the back
component.
The first construction design is on
the right.

I created these construction designs to help me decide on the sizes and dimensions I will use to create a
physical model of the grip. When deciding on the dimensions I took into account the size of current smart
phones and the size of the spring I wanted to use.

Example 1 (HL)

“Uses concept modelling to guide design development”

Once I designed the grip sizes and dimensions I decided to use a 3D printer to
Smart Phone Grip create the physical model. To do this I first had to create a 30 generated model on
a computer application so that the 3D printer can understand what I wanted it to
print. The first CAD model I created is below.

Next I turned the CAD model into a Stereolithogra-

phy (STL) file so the 'Maker Bot' 30 printer could
understand and print the grips. I sent the files for
both components to the printer and I decided to use
the colors green and orange to fit my specification
of bright colors . I chose to use the option of
'diamond printing', which takes longer to print the
model but makes it stronger.

The back component is the green print and the front

is the orange print.

After both components were printed off I started

testing to see if everything works. This testing in-
cludes spring pressure, correct sizes and dimen-
sions and the strength of the parts.

Page nineteen

Example 1 (HL)

“Uses concept modelling to guide design development”

Smart Phone Grip

The testing was very beneficial to the project. I found multiple problems and ended up printing the
bottom component 4 times and the front component twice.

Problem one:
after printing the first copy of both components I found that they did not fit into one another because of the
bottom components internal center walls (which are used to keep the spring stable). They were to far apart
which was causing them to clash with the front component's internal walls ( which are used to hold the spring
in place). To solve this I brought the walls closer together.

Problem two:
After I printed the second copy of the bottom component it still would not fit. When I looked closer I saw the
entrance slots for the front component were too small and couldn't fit the width of the front components. I al-
so noticed that the clips on inside of the sides extended to far out and were scraping against the front com-
ponent. To fix these two problems I widened the entrance slots and make the length of the clips smaller.

Problem three:
When I printed the bottom component for the third time the parts did fit together but when I put the springs
and phone in the complete clip, the wall which puts pressure on the phone to hold it cracked. To fix this I
thickened the wall.

Pivots This is the process of how I created pivots for my mount

One of the specification is that the mount needs to adjust be-

tween
landscape and portrait so I need to find a way to apply this
specification to my mount.

the first thing I took inspiration from is the 'GoPro' adjustable

arm, with is to the right. I thought that if alter the arm I could
use it to make my grip part completely rotate.

The 'GoPro' adjustable arm is too bulky and the full angle of
pivot is too small to create a full rotation. To fix this problem I
will design a similar pivot mechanism which is compact and
small but will also create the possibility of a full rotation be-
tween portrait and landscape.

I expired into the dimension of the current product to better

understand how the pivots work.

This is the first rough sketch I drew when I was deciding on how design the pivots.
During this process I decided to include 3 main components in the pivots. A part
will be formed with the smartphone grip, one attached to the clamp which will at-
tach to the bicycle and another one to attach the other two pivot parts together

The drawing above is a more detailed

representation of how the pivots will
work. These two drawing also
strengthened my decision to create 3
pivot parts. Also in those drawing you

Pivots This is the process of how I created pivots for my mount

Though I could 30 print the pivots like I did with the smartphone grip, I decided not to due to time and the detail
needed in a 3D CAD model. I decided to laser cut sheets of acrylic plastic and then with small amounts of dilut-
ed dichloromethane to bond the parts together. The 2D CAD for the pivot parts are below.

Once the laser cutter cut out each part, I had to apply
the bonding chemical. I placed each piece together in
the form I wanted them to be bonded together and then
I wrapped them in tape to keep then together as well
as to make it easier to handle. Dichloromethane is dan-
gerous to human skin so the tape was beneficial in ap-
plying it to the pieces. I used a brush to paint the chem-
ical in between each piece to bond them together. After
I waited 5 minutes, then applied a second coat for extra
strength and after I waited another 10 minutes before
removing the tape. When the tape was removed the
pivot pieces were bonded together. I bonded two of the
parts I just created together to make the final center
pivot piece. The part which attaches to the smartphone
grip is square so to make the attachment stronger I la-
ser cut a square opening and bonded it to the grip
component. Next I bonded the first pivot part to the
back of the smartphone grip by using the square open-
ing, I also used nuts and bots to create the actual pivot
motion and to keep the 3 pivot parts together.

Pivots
To the right shows photos from the process
of attaching the pivots the smart phone
grip. I used dichloromethane to bond the
components together.

dichloromethane

One of the last minute adjustments I made to the pivots was I removed two pegs from the last pivot part, which
connects to the clamp. I did this because the clamp J chose did not fit with the original
design and by removing two pegs it decreases the length which is better for some of the specifications like
safety and size.

The picture to the right shows how I used a coping

saw to get in between the 3 pegs to remove the
center peg. I originally did this so I could put a part
of the camp between the remanding pegs and then
use a bolt and nut through the center hole to
attach the clamp to the pivots. However when I
was trying to insert he clamp between the two
pegs, one of the peg came off.

After one of the pegs came off I real-

ized that the clamp actually fits bet-
ter on the pivots. Also having it this
way allows for easily adjustable ca-
pabilities and adds more rotation to
the pivots.

The picture to the left is the final piv-

ots attached the final smart phone

Clamp This is the process of how I choose a clamp for my mount

Originally the clamp I wanted to include in my mount was
metal and a strong metal such a steel. The clamp I wanted
to use was something like the photo to the right. After I
thought about it I realized that if I used a metal clamp it
would add a significant weight to the bike which would af-
fect the riders experience while using the bicycle. This real-
ization made me decide to use a different material.

So I looked at existing bike clamps by looking

at multiple bicycle s. I noticed that most mod-
ern bicycles have plastic clamps, which are
used to attach a reflectors to the bike. These
clamps are cover around the bike frame easily
due to their flexibility and the type of plastic is
strong and not brittle. I checked my own bicy-
cle to and found it has these reflector clamps.
When I studied my own bicycle I found a
clamp so I took it off and I tried to incorporate
it into my project.

It fit very nicely after I make a few changes to my pivots

( which I stated in the pivots section). The clamp used
two bolts, one to attach to the rest of the mount {before I
would attach to a reflector), and the other to tighten the
hold on the bicycle.
I decided to incorporate this existing clamp in my mount
as its final clamp.

Justification of final choice

I chose the design to the left as my final
choose. This design was created from combin-
ing the best parts of all 5 of my original ideas .
The marketing specifications and design spec-
ification for which apply to this mount are be-
low:

Marketing specification
 Target market
The bicycle mount will appeal to younger
people. 12-35. This is because smart
phones are very popular with the young.
While older people ride bicycles and use
smartphones, their will be more likely to be
reluctant to use their phone while riding.
 Target audience
This product mostly caters to the need of
more serious bikers and cyclists but all ap-
ply to those with cycles and smart phones.
 Market analysis
I decided to make the camera visible to the
incoming path because of the popularity of
recording video while riding a bike from a
first person perspective. I also included the
ability to adjust because smart phone users
have the ability to rotate its screen view but
turning the phone.

Design specification (continued)

Ergonomics
1.6 every part of this mount is ergonomic. The smartphone grip simply opens to hold a phone by pulling
each side outward and the spring tighten the grip automatically. The pivots are firm but with a small
loosen of a bolt the mount is easily adjusted. The clamp is also easy to use and can be operated with one
nut and bolt.

Color
1.7 The color is a key in the mounts safety. The grip is bright green and orange so motorist can easily see
the cyclist. The pivots are reflective green to help motorist see the user in darker environments.

Visibility
1.8 I designed the mount so that it is only 140mm long so that when it is put in front of the angle of
visibility of the user it doesn't block the view of the incoming path.

Adjustable
1.9 The smartphone grip is very adjustable due to the spring mechanism which makes it very easy to
both insert and remove the smart phone from the mount.
2.0 The pivots are easily adjusted with a nut and bolt by loosening and tightening it.
2.1 The clamp is also easily adjusted by a nut and bolt but the clamps bolt has a better grip to make it
even easier to adjust

Sharp corners
2.2 There is no corners on the pivots nor the clamp and the 30 printer does not print dangerous sharp cor-
ners.

Secure
2.3 The 3 bolts used in the pivots and clamp mean the mount is secure on the bike and the 2 spring in
the grip make the phone secure in the green and orange grip.

Attachable
2.4 The phone can be attached to the mount
2.5 The mount can be attached to the bike

Removable
2.4 The phone can be removed from the mount
2.5 The mount can be removed from the bike

Strong
2.6 The 30 printer was set to diamond printed so that the grip could be as strong as possible
2.7 In this prototype the pivots are made of acrylic plastic which isn't very strong but the real product would
be made of a stronger plastic like PET.
2.8 The clamp is from an existing product and the company who made it used a strong plastic.

Weather Resistant
2.8 All my parts are either made of plastic or non ferrous metals. Both materials are very resistant to
harsh weather .

Example 1 (HL)

“Justifies the choice of appropriate materials and components for a prototype”

Material and components for a prototype

For the smartphone grip, originally I wanted it to be made of a type of
metal due to its strong properties, but I do not have the manufacturing
techniques to work with metal. I believed that metal would have been the
best option because of its strong characteristics. I wouldn't have smelted
the metal and pored it into a mold I would have created. If I did follow
this path, it could be a future adaption of this project. After studying ex-
isting projects, I noticed that most were made of either a strong yet flexi-
ble plastic, or a very flexible plastic. I took these observations into ac-
count when deciding on the method of production for this prototype.
When I looked into 30 printing I studied the types of plastics it uses. after
this I decide that 3D printing would be the best option because of the
easy process of creation and that the properties of the types of plastics
fit the ones I need for this project. This plastic I decide to use is called
PLA, which is a thermo plastic used by 'Maker Bot'. It comes in the form
of wire and is inserted into the 30 printer. The printer melts the plastic
and then draws the object with the melted plastic layer after layer.

I chose PLA plastic because:

It can be changed to various translucency and opacity colors . Also PLA
is strong, and more rigid than ABS. ABS is this other thermoplastic
'MakerBot' uses for their 30 printer. Also, though it was part of my speci-
fication, PLA is environmentally friendly, being created from plants such
as corn, potatoes or sugar-beets.

For the pivots I always wanted to make them from plastic. I felt
that laser cutting plastic parts and then bonding them together
would be the best option. I could have 30 printed them but it
would have been much too hard to create virtual CAD design
also the time needed for printing would be tedious. The best
available plastic for laser cutting was acrylic. I chose the bright-
est color I could find, which was this reflective neon green. I cut
them the parts out and used dichloromethane to bond the plastic
together.

Acrylic isn't the best material for these pivots due the brittle
properties and the fact that acrylic can easily snap when it is in
the form of sheets. I would use a better plastic, like ABS, for the
manufacturing of the product.

I decided to use the existing bike clamp because of the material .

The plastic is a thermoplastic which is strong and dense but is also
flexible enough to stretch around the handle bars on a bicycle. Is
doesn't bend when the mount is attached, no matter how heavy the
phone is. Also the black color adds the mounts asthetics.

Manufacturing and assembly techniques for prototype production

3D virtual modeling (CAD)

The first step in the manufacturing of the prototype

was to create a CAD on my smartphone grip. It
was created on a 3D modeling program called 'Pro
Desktop'. After the model was completed, the file
needed to be saved as a Stereolithography file so
that the 30 printer could recognize the model.

3D Printing

The 3D printer process is a simple one. The brand 3D printer

I used is 'MakerBot'. First the filament ( thromboplastic ) need
to be inserted into the printer. I chose orange filament for the
front of the grip and green for the back. After the filament is
inserted and fed through the printer, the printer will next heat
the plastic to a point when it starts to melt. The use of a com-
puter is also needed. The 3D printer programmed will be
used to import the Stereolithography file. After it has down-
loaded the full file, It will allow you to send the data to the
printer to create the 3D model. The printing of the object is so
precise and many layer of plastic is layered on top of one an-
other. This process took about 1.5 hour, for both parts.

2D virtual modelling (CAD)

I used a 20 modeling program to create

the CAD used for the pivots. I did this be-
cause I decide to laser cut the parts for the
pivots. I used a program called '2D Design'
to create the CAD. After I drew the parts
on the program I exported it as a .dxf file
so the laser cutter could recognize the da-
ta .

Laser cutting

Laser cutters use powerful laser beams, at a pre-

cise focal length away from the materials to either
cut though the material or etch it. The laser cutter IMAGE OF A LASER CUTTER MACHINE
uses computer to send CAM files to the cutter. I
imported the pivot CAM files as a dxf type so that
the laser cutter program could recognize it. After it IMAGE HAS BEEN REMOVED DUE TO
was uploaded I prepared the cutter by placing a COPYRIGHT REASONS
sheet of acrylic inside the laser cutter and then
adjusting the laser focus. I used a block, which
was the correct focal length, to adjust the laser
point. I used a vacuum to suck out all the fumes.
The cutting of the plastic was fast.

Dichloromethane application

First I used tape to hold the pieces in the for-

mation I wanted. Then I used a brush to ap-
ply small amounts of diluted dichloromethane
between the parts to bond them together. I
repeated this process twice to ensure that
the parts were completely bonded together. I
let the pivot parts sit for 10 minutes to let the
chemical dry. Then removed the tape. After I
used the chemical to bond two parts together
so that the peg were on both sides (this is the
center pivot which is connected to the phone
grip and the clamp.) I also laser cut a slot
piece for the pivots and bonded it to the back
of the smartphone grip.

The final manufacturing

step is to insert all the
bolts and nuts into the
pivots and clamp. This
is to tighten for security

“Evaluates the success of the solution against the marketing specification”

Testing for evaluation

This prototype was created because it best fit the problem
which it was built to fix. From educated guessing, before test-
ing, I believe that this mount will allow the user to Hold any
phone attach to a bicycle and listen to music , use the cam-
era as well as safely take phone calls while not blocking the
vision of the rider. This mount also followed many of the
specifications, especially the most important ones. From the
testing, user trip and evaluation I will see if this is actually the
best product to solve my original problem. Also I will explore
way sl could improve this prototype.

The first form of testing I did was actually us-

ing it on my bicycle, and I was very pleased
with it performance. I was able to listen to
music, use the camera as well as safely take
phone calls while not blocking my vision. The mount I also asked my friend, who is a serous competi-

Testing for evaluation

User Trip
During a showcase of my project I asked about 20 people to give their option on the mount. Also I
asked if there is any problems the noticed or improvement they thought of.

Many said that the smartphone grip should be longer and include corners. The people mentioned
this because they didn't feel that the current grip was protected enough. These corners would pro-
vide help to better protect the phone if the mount hit the ground. The corners of a phone is the
weakest impacted point on the phone and if hit can very easily crack the screen and even break
the whole phone.

Those who suggested corner protection also said that they would want the material of the corners
to be like a rubber. Many high protection cases are made of rubber or a rubber like plastic to act as
a shock absorber.

A problem one person pointed out was that the clamp could only fit on the thinner bike frames. This
problem is because I used an existing clamp which was designed for a certain area on the bike. In
a non prototype copy I would make the clamp larger.

A suggestion someone asked was to have more easy to use grips on the bolts (like the clamp bolt).
The only 'easily to grip bolt' was used on the clamp so that the user can quickly remove the mount
from their bikes.

Someone suggested I get rid of my current pivot design and re design it with a ball barring instead
so it has even more adjustability and make it easier to use. Though this idea is good, I dont think
its will work because I believe the ball barring will easily move while the rider is moving across
harsh terrain

One person pointed out that phones are getting bigger and the asked if my mount would be able to
carry phone bigger than the current maximum.

I also asked the people what they would be willing pay for this project.

The majority of the people said they wouldn't pay any higher that $20. Though this can seem low in
comparison to existing products I would still make a profit if I produced it at the price It cost me to
make this prototype.

A couple said they would pay higher if there would more features and if some of the material were
more reliable, like metal. This will lead me to add improvements to my prototype

Target market and audience
The product was well received in its two main target users, cyclists and casual bicycle users. The
feedback was positive but some problems and ways to improve. From target audience, of the peo-
ple I asked, all said they could see themselves using this product in the future.

Market analysis
When comparing this product with those in the current market I found that it could be a valid mount
to compete with the others. From the testing and evaluation I found that the existing product looked
like they had more quality but the price was to high for users to consider buying .

User need
From the testing with the users the mount is:
 Easy to use
 Colorful
 Safe
 Allows for smartphone feature (calls, camera, music)
 Aesthetic
 Can hold most smart phones

Unfortunately, because I used a damp from an existing product I wasn't able to make it attach to all
parts of the bike.

Competition
Though the competition Is high, after showing the people I interviewed pictures of existing products
they said that my product could compete. The price was a key factor in the evaluation of competi-
tion. Many of the products have extremely high added value. The people I talked to said that they
would never pay upward of $70 for a bike phone mount (which is the price of the product, Quad
Lock Bike Mount).

When I asked how much they would buy my product for, majority said that they wouldn't pay over
$20. Though this might seem low, it is a good price because it will compete will higher priced
mount and I would still make a profit due to the low production price. The price to make the proto-
type was $7.25 but the price will decrease significantly during mass production .

Function
The mount holds any size of phone. While the
phone it in the mount is can do tasks such as
make calls, take photos and video and the us-
er can listen to music. All the functions are
designed to be done safely and the mount is
small enough to stay below the users angle of
vision. The clamp can not attach itself to any
part of the bike because I didn't not design it,
it is part of an existing product. but during the
process of improving, I will redesign it to be
able to attach to any part of the bike.

Aesthetics and material

The overall aesthetics are said to be nice due
to its simplicity and use of color. The materials
I sed included: PLA thermoplastic from the 30
printer, acrylic thermo setting plastic cut by a
laser cutter and a type of strong thermo-
plastic. If I could change the material of my
prototype for production, I would use a light
weight metal instead of acrylic for the pivots.
Environment
The mount fits good in its environment. It can withstand a journey on harsh terrain while attached
to the bike.

Sustainability
All the materials are sustainable because they are made of plastic. A factor which would effect the
sustainability of the mount is the weather since the mount would be used outside. Rain, wind, heat
and cold wont effect this mount.

Quality
The overall quality of the mount is good but it could be improved during the redesign and with bet-
ter materials.

Overall
Overall I because that this mount solves the problem with I started and based on my brief I believe
that this product is successful .

Example 1 (HL)

During the creation of my prototype I used manufacturing techniques 3D printing and laser cutting. If I
were to extend the mount into commercial production these 30 printing and laser cutting would be too time
consuming and will cost more than necessary. Below are the ways I would create the phone mount if it
when into commercial production.

Plastic Injection molding

J will use injection mold both Smartphone grip and

ING MACHINE This is a very good idea because injection molding
in mass production is cost effective and can lower
the cost of production significantly.

SONS Injection molding is a very effective process be-
cause it is such a precise method of production
with made the product very accurately. Its low la-
bor means lower costs.

Metal injection molding

Pivots
I chose to use injection molding again because it is a effective way of production. For the same reasons
that I stated above I decided to use injection molding to manufacture the pivots. The metal I chose to in-
jection mold is steal. This will add value to the mount and make it more secure due to the strength of met-
al.

Price
The original price of my prototype was $7.25, this was
from 30 printing PLA, laser cutting acrylic and a using a
existing product {which cost $3.15). Most of these cost
are not necessary which is why I chose to use injection
molding for my commercial production. But using injec-
tion molding I can cut my cost by more than 50% if I
buy in bulk due mass production. The metal will cost
more than the plastic. The estimate price per unit is
$2.30. This estimate price was given from Aurora
group, a company who specialize in injection molding.

I used a program which calculates the gross profit of

the product. The program took into account the retail
price of $20, the potential market of the product and the
manufacture price. For a 7% share In the potential mar-
ket the gross profit estimates to £184,497,330.00. This
is if I sold the product to 7 of the most suitable coun-
tries.

Product
The product itself is very aesthetic it will attach
the customers eye. Also because it is a product
with a very specific market it will be sold in a
store which specializes in bicycles. This will
make it easier for the customer to see this prod-
uct.

place
I will get popular bicycle stores to carry this prod-
uct. This way It is more likely for the customer to
find my product. It will also increase the amount
of sales due to the amount of customers who
visit the store.

Promotion
I have decided that the best form of promotion for this project is advertising

The rules of advertising

Aim - The aim in advertising this project is to attract the attention
of the people.

Target - The target is to change the peoples perception of the

product enough to the point that it makes them want to but the

media so I will need to find media which has not already made a
advertising deal which an existing competitor.

Developing effective advertising- Before all of the actual ad-

vertising, I will run focus groups to find the best content to put on
the advertisements.

Attention - The images/video and text will have to be different

so that I grads the attention of the people. If the advertisement is
similar to other advertisements created by competitors, the prod-
uct would stand out in the customers minds.

Interest - In the advertisement I would have to include the inter-

ests of the majority of my potential market.
