The project commenced in 1984 and had been executed in different phases. The
main object to bridge the gap between housing demand and supply by providing
environmentally acceptable shelter at affordable cost was attempt through implementation
of B.U.D.Project.
The B.U.D project provides for two main components for providing affordable low
cost shelter as under:
(A) Land and infrastructure servicing programme (L.I.S.P)
(B) Slum Upgradation programme (S.U.P)
(A) L.I.S.P:
Land and infrastructure servicing programme involves the provision of five basic
services viz. water supply, sewerage, drainage, roads and pathways, electric supply
arrangement and the developed plots were allotted to the beneficiaries of different categories
of different income group such as Economical Weaker Section (E.W.S.) Lower income group
(L.I.G.) Middle Income Group (M.I.G.) and Higher Income Group (H.I.G.)
(B) S.U.P.
The S.U.P. component of the project involves the lease of the land under slum to co-
operative Housing Societies and loan assistance to slum dwellers at the average rate of
Rs.2000/- per house-hold for environmental improvement and Rs.5000/- to Rs. 14250/- per
household for home improvement. The loan is repayable in 20 years and carries interest at
the rate of 12% per annum.Salient features of infrastructure under this scheme :
1) Common toilet for 4 to 10 families
2) One water tap for 10 families
3) Pathway/Roads as per requirement
4) Storm water drains
5) Balwadi for children.
The World Bank Project cell closed on 30 th September 1994 and it’s activities are
merged into Mumbai Housing & Area Development Board & Konkan Board. The
cumulative achievements is given in Table.
