GRAMMAR NOTES

1. Use the present factual conditional sentences to talk about general

truths and scientific facts. The if clause talks about the condition and
the main clause talks about the result if the condition occurs. Use the
simple present tense in both clauses.

If clause (condition) Main clause (Result)

If you study, you learn English.

2. You can also use factual conditional sentences to talk about habits
and things that recur (happen again and again). Use the simple present
tense in both clauses.

If clause (condition) Main clause (Result)

If he studies, he learns English.

If she watches T.V. in English, she gets some vocabulary.

If it rains tomorrow, He prefers to stay at home.

If he washes the dishes, She helps him with another duty

If the mechanic fixes her car, she can go out tonight.

3. You can begin conditional sentences with the if clause or the main
clause. The meaning is the same.

“If the seat belt light goes on, buckle your seat belt.”

or

“Buckle your seat belt if the seat belt light goes on”

Be careful! Use a comma between the two clauses

only when the if clause comes first.

4. Use modals in the main clause to express ability, advisability or

possibility.

If you practice your English, you CAN improve quickly.

If you shop in open-air markets, you SHOULDN’T get dressed up.

If you dress up, shopkeepers MIGHT charge you more.

5. Use the imperative in the main clause to give instructions, commands

and invitations that depend upon a certain condition.

If you want good weather, TRAVEL in June

If she doesn’t want to be surrounded, DON’T even CALL her.

If you come to Colombia, STAY with us.

6. We sometimes use THEN to emphasize the result in factual

conditional sentences with modals or imperatives.

If you need money, THEN you already know you have to save it.

If you really want to learn English, THEN you have to practice.

If she really loves him, THEN she shouldn’t date other men.

7. You can negate either or both clauses of conditional sentences.

If I’m travelling a long distance, I fly.

If I’m not travelling a long distance, I drive.

If I’m travelling a long distance, I don’t drive.

If I’m not travelling a long distance, I don’t fly.

8. You can often use when or whenever instead of if. This is especially
true when you talk about general truths, habits and recurring events.

When air expands, it becomes lighter.

Whenever he flies, he orders a special meal.

Whenever the flight is bumpy, I keep my seat belt buckled.

Dear students:

Now, try to discover the grammar underlining the main clause and
circling the sentence that expresses a condition.

If you run into problems in your journey, know your rights as

a passenger. Often the airline company is required to
compensate you for delays or damages. For example, the airline
provides meals and hotel rooms if a flight is unduly delayed.
However, the airline owes you a lot more if the delayed is
caused by overbooking. This occurs mostly during holidays, when
airlines often sell more tickets than there are seats. If all the
passengers actually show up, then the flight is overbooked.
Airlines usually award upgrades or additional free travel to
passengers who volunteer to take a later flight. However, if no
one volunteers, your flight may be delayed. In that case, the
airline must repay you 100 percent of the cost of your ticket
for a delay of up to four hours on an international flight.
Whenever the delay is over four hours, you receive 200
percent of the cost of your ticket. Suppose you arrive on
time, but your suitcase don’t. Ask for funds to buy clothing
or toiletries if your luggage is delayed. The airline should award
you twenty – five to fifty dollars. If the airline actually loses
your suitcase, then it must pay you the value of its contents.
The limit is 1.250 for a domestic flight and nine dollars a
pound for an international one.

Reading

Read the following passage and answer the questions according to it.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

High-speed travel is usually fast and efficient. However, it has

special hassles, and these can cause delay and discomfort if you
don’t know how to avoid them. Know before you go and enjoy
your journey more.

RECONFIRMING:
If you are travelling internationally, you have to
reconfirm your flight 72 hours ahead of time. In
spite of electronic reservation systems, many
airlines rely on your telephone call to reserve your
seat.

CHECKING IN:
A good travel agent can often get you a
boarding pass in advance. However, even
with a previously issued boarding pass, you
should still check in at the gate. You can be
bumped from a flight if you don’t.

Página 13 de 27

MEALS:
If you need a low-calorie, low sodium
or low-cholesterol meal, order it in
advance from the airline. You can
also order vegetarian and Kosher
meals ahead of time. If you hate
airplane food (and many people do),
then it’s a good idea to order one of
these special meals anyway. It will be fresher and taste better than
the standard meal.

COMFORT:
One common cause of
discomfort on a plane is
dehydration, caused by traveling
in a pressurized cabin. To avoid
this problem, drink a glass of
juice or water every hour you
are on the plane. Sitting in a
place for too long is another
cause. If you move around the cabin every hour, you can avoid
stiffness. We also suggest doing stretching exercises in your seat.

JET LAG:
When you get to your destination, jet
lag will catch up you. There’s no way
to avoid it. If you travel across time
zones at high speeds, your internal
clock doesn’t keep up with the time
changes. That’s why your body thinks
it’s midnight when it’s really 9:00 a.m.
To minimize the discomfort, reset
your watch for the time zone of your
destination before you leave home. Also, arrange to arrive late in
the day. You are psychologically prepared to sleep at the right
time if it’s evening when you get to your destination.

WHEELCHAIR FLYERS:
Airline wheelchairs are heavy, and
someone must push you from behind.
You have much more mobility if you
store your own wheelchair in the cabin.
Terry Winkler, a physician who is also a
paraplegic, gives this advice: “If my
wheelchair can’t be stored on board, I
insist that they bring it from the
baggage compartment as soon as the
plane lands,” if you have a disability, be aware of your rights as
passenger. Most airlines cannot bar you except under very special
circumstances. If you do not require special equipment, you do
not even have to notify the airline of your disability in advance.

FLYING WITH CHILDREN

If you are travelling with children, your big
challenge is to stay together on the plane.
Ask for seats as early as possible (thirty days
before your flight). If you get scattered
seats, preboard and ask the flight attendant
to help you. He or she may be able to
reassemble the family before the flight.
Always try to get a direct flight. If you must make a connection
flight, you may be able to arrange for an electric car to take you
from one gate to the next one. Ask your flight attendant to radio
ahead for one.

QUESTIONS

1. If you don’t reconfirm your flight, what is going to happen?

2. What can happen if you don’t check in at the gate?

3. If you need to order some special meal, what should you do?

4. What is suggested if you are not hydrated?

5. What can happen if you travel across time zones?

6. What do you have to do if you are a wheelchair flyer?

7. What’s advisable to do if you are flying with children?

GRAMMAR NOTES

1. Use factual conditional sentences with the future to talk about what will
happen under certain conditions. The if clause states the condition; the
main clause states the probable or certain result.

If I am elected, together we will finish the work we planned.

If I make people understand good manners are relevant for us, we will
live better in a nicer environment.

Be careful!!!
Even though the
if clause refers
to the future,
use the simple

Listen and answer the questions above.
Imagine life without phones, TV, internet, electricity,
cars, money, etc. all of those things exist thanks to
people’s creativity. If people don’t create, they will
always be the same people and life will be meaningless
because they won’t know what to expect from life. On
the other hand, those creations make us victims and
slaves of technology and we might forget how to take
part in life. How must we behave according to this? It’s
not as simple as we might think but it’s important to
find a balance between forgetting about ourselves or
become more independent.
“What will you do tomorrow?” - “I will spend the whole
day chatting on messenger because I love it.” This is a
very common conversation nowadays but that has to
stop in order to live peacefully.
According to the reading, answer the following
questions.
What will people do if those things simply disappear?
How will you behave if technology disappears?
How will you spend your free time if you have no
hobbies to enjoy?
