What Type of Milk Will Dissolve a Cookie the Fastest?

Did you know that U.S. dairy farms produce 21 billion gallons of milk each year? Did

you know that almond milk has to most protein out of any other milk? Did you know that most

Americans consume almost 25 gallons of milk annually (Milk)? These facts really shocked me,

so I decided to do my science fair project on milk. The science fair topic I chose is what type of

milk will dissolve a cookie the fastest. My science fair hypothesis is if I put a cookie in cows

milk, almond milk, and soy milk, then cow’s milk will dissolve a cookie the fastest. .

What Does it Mean for Something to Dissolve?

The likeness between water molecules and other things with a positive or negative charge

will make things dissolve. Some things don't dissolve because their reaction with the water

molecules is not good. Gases can dissolve because of the reaction of the water molecules and gas

molecules. Some solids and liquids can dissolve too. Most things dissolve in water because it has

a positive and negative charge. When carbon dioxide dissolves, it makes carbonated water

(Chemistry).

What Factors Affect How Quickly Something Will Dissolve?

Certain factors will affect how quickly or slowly something will dissolve. Temperature

change will make it dissolve at a different rate. Also, pressure change will make gasses dissolve

faster. When there is more pressure, gasses will dissolve faster. When a carbonated drink is

opened in a low pressure area, it will explode. When carbon dioxide dissolves the temperature is

hotter and the solubility decreases (Libretexts).

How Do You Accurately Measure the Rate At Which Something Dissolves?

Measuring the rate at which something dissolves can be done in many ways.It can be

measured in grams. If the water is the solvent, the grams per solute is 100 (Gonsoir). Another

way to measure the rate is to find out how many molecules you are dissolving. Next, measure

and write down the thing you are going to dissolve the molecule by, called the solute. Then,

divide molecules by the solute. Lastly, multiply that by 100 (Whitehouse) .

What is Solubility?

The definition of solubility is the amount of a substance that dissolves into another one

(Berger 177). It is the ability that a substance can dissolve. To have solubility, you need a solute

and a solvent. The solute is the substance that is being dissolved, and the solvent is the dissolver.

For example, salt is a solute and water is a solvent. To solute a substance, you might need the

temperature of the solvent to be either hot or cold. To solute salt the water temperature has to be

at 25 degrees celsius.(Solubility).

What Factors Affect the Solubility of a Solution? And Why?

Many factors affect the solubility of a solution. When temperature increases, the

molecules will solute faster. Polarity is also important because most things that dissolve into

each other are somewhat similar. Pressure matters too, but for solid and liquid solutes it does

not. For gas solutes there is more solubility when there is more pressure. Molecule size is another

factor. The bigger it is, the more it will weigh, so the longer it will take to dissolve. Larger

particles are not as soluble (Factors).

What Are the Differences Between Cow’s Milk, Soy Milk, and Almond Milk?

Cow’s milk, soy milk, and almond milk have many differences. Cow's milk is made

when people milk a cow, then modify the heat of it(Liquid). The ingredients in almond milk are

almonds, thickeners, sweeteners, emulsifiers, vitamins, flavoring, and protein(DiNuzzo). The

ingredients in soy milk are soybeans, cane juice, malt syrup, sea salt, and natural vanilla

flavoring(Pearl). Soy milk has less fat than almond milk, but almond milk has more starch. They

both are full of vitamin B(Almond).

I hypothesized that, if I put a cookie in cow’s milk, almond milk, and soy milk, then cows

milk will dissolve a cookie the fastest. I put a Chips Ahoy chocolate chip cookie in all three types

of milk, and I used an electric mixer to stir the milk while the cookie was in the milk. The

cookie was checked on every ten seconds. This was tested ten times. The average time for soy

milk was 135 seconds. The average time for almond milk was 143 seconds. The average time for

cows milk was 116 seconds. This experiment proved my hypothesis to be true. A cookie will

dissolve the fastest in cows milk.
