Measuring reading is a description of the condition at a physical or logical place at a point in

time. It is the transaction data associated with measuring points and form the basis for
condition-based maintenance.
In ADF for complex installations of equipment (Master Equipment Record MER) with
numerous pieces of equipment or sub equipment (Equipment Master Records EMRs)
equipment each with multiple counters per piece of equipment, one measurement point and
measurement document history is created per counter at MER level and transferred within the
defined hierarchy structure to the respective position of EMR
Number Range: The numbers for Measuring Points are assigned internally and recommended
to work with the standard settings
Description: Description field defines the description of the measuring point in the form of a
short text with a maximum length of 40 Characters . Long test will be used to describe
additional description details
Measuring Point Object: Measuring points are defined based on the Measuring Point Object
category (a key at which the measuring point is located) of the object (Equipment or
Functional Location)
Category: Measuring point of category “General” will be configured with no requirement to
check the uniqueness with message key that shows the online message to be issued by the
systems when an Message Category when a measurement reading falls above or below the
specified measurement range will be configured to give a “Warning” message Measurement
Range Exceeded. In system, the following are possible message types: E = error and W =
warning.
Measuring point position: A number or description which describes the position of the
measuring point in relation to the technical object. Measuring points are uniquely identified
by the numbers that they are assigned internally. In Measurement point master data Since this
number is not descriptive and has the option of giving the measuring point a text or a
descriptive number to describe the position of a measuring point at a technical object.
Technical Object: Equipment or Functional Location
Characteristic and unit fields of measuring point describe the properties and unit of
measurement of the object which is under monitoring, for example if the temperature of a
equipment is to be monitored then characteristic with unit of measurement Degree Celsius
with number of decimal places and total number of digits. Upon entering the Once
characteristic is entered, automatically unit of measurement and number of decimal places
will be copied to measuring point data
The means with which object wear, consumption, or reduction of a working supply
represented by Counter. Counters are represented in the system as a form of measuring point;
If the measuring point is also a counter it is flagged so while defining the master data of the
measuring point
The numbers for Measurement Document are assigned internally and recommended to work
with the standard settings
For qualitative valuation of measurement readings, if there is no measurement reading entry
required that is where there is no requirement to enter any unit of measurement and reading to
enter, then Value Code sufficient check box is is set to Checked. For example, in a machine,
to check whether level of lubricant oil is OK or NOT OK only and not required to maintain
any value and unit Value Code sufficient check box is set to Checked
Catalog type for the measuring point category are maintained to assign code group to
measuring points.
Code Groups such as Damage, Cause of Damages, Object Components, Tasks, Activities and
Measurement Reading are codes that that are similar in content or related in some way are
combined into code groups for evaluation.
Examples:
Lubricant Levels with Codes 001 and 002 can be Grouped to one Group Code “Lubricant
Level”
Group all codes for damage to motors in to one Group Code Motor Damages and Group all
codes for damage of pumps into another Group Code Pump Damages
Authorization Group Field is used to restrict user’s privileges to see and process measuring
points.

Step 13: Enter Target value. Target value is the desired or the ideal value of
measuring point reading. It is the optimum value of measuring point.

Step 14: Click on the Additional Data button. A pop up box will appear.

Step 15: Enter the upper range limit and lower range limit of measuring reading.
For example: If we are recording the temperature of a reactor and we want to
define a range of this temperature like upper limit = 250 C and lower limit = 150
C. Now if temperature goes beyond this range, then system will throw an error or
warning message, depending upon the setting in SPRO.

Step 16: Click on SAVE button and system will generate a new measuring point
with a system generated number.

Condition based maintenance

1. Enter the current reading and Valuation code in Measurement Document for the respective
Equipment/ Functional Location
2. In case the Valuation Code is CM02 i.e. Not OK, a Corrective Maintenance Notification
creation initial screen will automatically come. Further entries can be made to the
notification and saved along with the Measuring Point.
3. In case the Valuation Code is CM01 i.e. OK, the measuring document will be saved and no
Notification will be created. Corrective notification will be raised for only those jobs for
which Equipment/ Site/ Location have deviated from certain required conditions
4. The Initiator (Person entering the measurement readings) will assign the Notification to the
Person Responsible
5. The Person Responsible will acknowledge the notification. In case it is wrongly assigned,
he/she would re-assign it to the correct person responsible
6. The Person responsible will acknowledge and then release the notification to carry out the
corrective maintenance. After completing the work the person responsible would complete
the Notification.
7. The Initiator will then check the complete work and if OK, he/she would confirm the
Notification.
8. In case work is not complete, the initiator can assign status Re-work to the Notification. In
this case, person responsible will complete the work.
9. After completion of work, Initiator will close the Notification. 10. Creation of Corrective
Maintenance order by Maint Dept. if material or external

As a major component of predictive maintenance, condition based monitoring is essential to increasing asset
longevity. Through condition based monitoring, plant managers constantly receive data that provides input about
the health of their machinery. For example, by knowing the vibration behavior and temperature of certain assets,
managers can make strategic decisions about preventative maintenance to avoid asset fatigue, breakdown and
failure

Test Equipment Management (QM-IT) SAP AG Creating Measuring Points/Counters for Test
Equipment 20 April 2001 measuring point/counter as to the master inspection characteristic. This is
the only way by which the measurement readings can be updated. For more information about
master inspection characteristics, see Master Inspection Characteristics in the Quality Management
component. 4. When you have entered all the necessary data, choose Continue. The system assigns
a number from an internal number range to each measuring point/counter. If you have already
entered the measurement position for each measuring point/counter, the system sorts the
measuring points according to the entries in the measurement position field. 5. For further editing,
you must branch into individual editing for each measuring point/counter. To do this, select the
measuring point/counter you want to edit and choose Goto Measuring point. You reach the detail
screen for the measuring point/counter. 6. Enter the necessary data. For more information about
working with measuring points and counters, see Measurement Readings and Counters component
(PM-EQM-SF-MPC).

Measurement Document in SAP System consists of the data transferred to the system after a
measurement has been taken at a measuring point or a counter. The data transfer can happen
automatically or manually. The measurement document is therefore the result of a measurement or
counter reading being entered in the system.

Measurement Document data record comprises the following groups of data:

• Measuring point data
This includes measuring point number, measurement position, description, characteristic and
unit, and other data as described in the earlier sections
• Measurement result data
This includes the time of the measurement or reading (time stamp) to the exact second, the
measurement or counter reading, and any qualitative judgment regarding the result of the
measurement.
• Possible additional information (as short and long text)
This includes information about which employee who took the measurement or counter reading,
and where necessary, the number of the measurement document from which the measurement
or counter reading result has been copied.

The data transferred to the system after a measurement has been taken at a measuring point or a

Structure
A data record for a measurement document comprises the following groups of data:
• Measuring point data
This includes measuring point number, measurement position, description, characteristic and
unit.

You can also assign a processing status to the measurement document. This can indicate whether:
• Action must be taken as a result of the measurement or counter reading being taken
• The action to be taken as a result of the measurement or counter reading is already covered by
a planned maintenance task
The system records both the entries converted to the unit of the characteristic and the original
entries of the user, that may have been made in a different unit to that of the characteristic unit. This
enables you to check later on, whether unusual values are the result of entries made incorrectly or
conversion errors.
If you change a measurement document, the system saves your changes in the form of change
documents. The measurement document also contains the user who created it and the user who last
changed it in its administrative data. You can only change the processing status, and the short or
long text.
You can archive measurement documents in the same way as a normal SAP object.
