Client Profile
Jenny Donahue is looking to relocate herself and her 13 year old son
William who has Autism. Jenny is an ICU Nurse who enjoys
scrapbooking and running. She has a collection of medals won from
various races over the years. She would like to remain close to the
hospital where she works and wants to keep access to running trails
along the river. Jenny is of Hispanic decent and prefers Art Nouveau as
the style of her new home. With a low-mid budget she requires a small
powder room or full bath on the second level. A living and dining room
space, home office and space for crafting is also required. The home
should have 3 bedrooms with plenty of linen and clothes storage, plus
laundry space. A custom designed built-in storage piece with display

Study Model Analysis
My study model was constructed using foam board and glue and was modeled at
½”=1’0’ I created the model based on the furniture plan for the living room. To achieve
a more symmetrical balance I could change the shape of the coffee table to a round or
oval one as opposed to the rectangle shaped one in the plan. The most pleasing portion
seen in the study model would be the side chairs. They are long and elegant and
aesthetically pleasing. By scaling the room to ½”=1-0’ it allowed for the furniture to be
arranged in a more functioning way. Once the scale was changed the furniture could be
visualized better therefore making it easier to design. The dominant piece of the room is
the sofa. Being the largest piece in the room its beauty and elegance stands out. The
subdominant piece in the arrangement would be the TV stand.

Sprinklers in Residences
From 1986 to 1990 more than four of five dwelling fire fatalities occurred in fires that
began in normal use areas of a residence such as: living/family rooms, dens, kitchens, and areas
typically found in basements such as laundry and heating areas. A reported 3190 civilian fire
deaths in the home in 2004. Many fatal fires occur at night when residents are sleeping, many
that were in a different room of the fire’s origin. (NFPA 4th Edition) Every residence should have
overhead sprinklers to prevent fires from spreading and deaths. Any resident could become a
victim to fire. The elderly, preschoolers, handicapped, or persons impaired by drugs or alcohol
are vulnerable in a sense that anything less than automatic suppression of flames would not be
enough to save them. (Sprinkler Handbook, 2007 A disadvantage of having the residential
sprinkler system is it can be very expensive to install and involves many formalities.
All new California single family residences (SFRs) and duplexes built on or after January
1, 2011 are required to have fire sprinkler systems. The first statewide building code for fire
sprinklers since previously only 146 California cities and counties had building codes that
required sprinklers in the home. (First Tuesday) In Tennessee the adoption of 2009 International
Residential Code (IRC) with 3 conditions: The state does not enforce sprinklers in one and two
family homes; individual jurisdictions can decide whether to require sprinklers; jurisdictions may

also opt out of having IRC enforced by super majority of elected officials and would have to take
residence. Based on the stats of high use areas being the most vulnerable to fires, many lives
could be saved and prevention of property loss and damages as well. There are fire insurance
policies that cover most damages, but a sprinkler system can prevent them from becoming larger

Reflection
The Residential Design 1 course has taught me so much over the past 5 ½
weeks. Each design concept reflects the overall feel of the home as a whole.
Residential codes and the knowledge of each code will be very beneficial to me as
a designer that will have clients with different needs/requirements and how they
will be executed in the home. Safety and Spatial Relationships are key concepts
for design because it will hinder or help in the everyday function of the home.
